Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Even the ACCC expect power prices to fall once the Carbon Tax is repealed.

The ALP appear to be enchanted by this carbon trap. The best house warming gift they can give the new Government is stand in front of repealing of the tax. I'm sure Tony will appreciate this gift wrapped excuse to remind everyone their living cost remain high because of the ALP...

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Because you keep insisting that since marginally more people voted for the current Government than didn't, anything they do is implicitly approved, and anyone who disagrees is implicitly wrong and should shut up..

Another parallel universe. I've never said anything like that.

And while we are at it, in the election thread I posted I wasn't excited by Abbott and would prefer Turnbull. So could we just cut the rubbish about Abbott fanbois?

There are a lot of reasons why the cost of living is high in Australia, chief amongst which is our property bubble. The net impact of carbon pricing, however, would barely even qualify as a rounding error in the typical household's living costs.

LOL that wont stop the majority from lapping up what they see on the evening news.......politics 101.

It's exactly the message you are delivering every time you try and shut down a discussion with a line about "respecting the will of the people".

lol property prices again & again & again and then some more.

Personally I'd be happy for house prices to continue to rise and the carbon tax to be ditched.

Ugh, fair enough, my bad.

Can be hard to distinguish between you and Pukka at a glance since I generally don't look at poster's names.

You mean like certain people like to bang on ceaselessly about the "carbon tax" ?

Unlike carbon pricing, the property bubble is actually having a seriously deleterious impact on the whole economy.

Personally I'd be happy for house prices to continue to rise and the carbon tax to be ditched.
I wouldn't expect anything else. I just hope you're ready to reap the economic carnage that attitude will eventually produce.

So everything else to do with producing electricity is allowed to have a cost, but not the pollution it produces? Do you actually care how high the CO2 levels get? Do you have another Earth on standby when you and your ilk have right royally rogered the current one?

My post is about the politics of the issue. Yours is just another school boy attempt of sledging ;)

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

If you can't tow the boats back, the LNP might as well bring out the government credit card and buy the boats back at the start. Woops, that's what they proposed anyway. And as an aside MP Scott Morrison questioning Indonesia and their sovereignty is not cool. Its a great way to score political points (and blame the not-stop-the-boats on someone else) but it offends our neighbours whom will up there with the major super-powers one day.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

It's good to see that drsmithy agrees that Kevin Rudd had no mandate for change after he won in 2007 as he says only marginally more voted for the coalition than didn't.

So lets go to the figures in the 2007 election.First preferences-ALP-43.38%,Coalition-42.09%.So the ALP got 104% of the Coalition vote.
Two party preferred-ALP-52.7%.Coalition-47.3%.So the ALP got 111% of the Coalition vote.

Now lets go to the marginal 2013 result remembering that the 2007 result was called a Ruddslide.
First preference-ALP-33.38%.Coalition-45.55%.Meaning the Coalition got 136.5% of the ALP vote.
Two party preferred-ALP-46.55%.Coalition-53.45%.So the Coalition got 115% of the ALP vote.

So people who lean to the Coalition shouldn't have been complaining about the Rudd/Gillard governments even though the Howard government was the subject of constant sniping from the left but now it is once again the lefts right to hate the Abbott government.

So perhaps Howard's offshore solution shouldn't have been dismantled?

Well it would've helped if he didn't join an illegal war that has caused hundreds of thousands of people to become refugees. Now that Australia and the allies have withdrawn from Afghanistan the number of refugees will increase.

As they say in the classics, 'you ain't seen nothing yet'.

Actually I think that because the idea of a mandate with anything less than a supermajority of the primary vote is absurd, and anything much under 90% of the vote questionable.

Lucky PNG needs cash - they're going to get [-]truck[/-] boats loads of it.

Might be easier/quicker/more efficient to just give the money straight to the many corrupt officials/politicians in Indo - bet they would stop the flow quick smart if we did that.

I'd be happy with mandates for much closer results, provided that the rules of "having a mandate" are clear. The ABC opinion piece Ending the squabble over election mandates - The Drum (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) pretty much sums up my opinion - unless we have an agreement between all sides (which isn't necessarily just Labor and the coalition) about how you get a mandate and what it covers, there are no mandates.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

It's not rocket surgery: The government has a mandate to pass any laws it can get through the parliament.

The people of Australia voted for the parliament not the government.
