Abbott in Government

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I'd be happy with mandates for much closer results, provided that the rules of "having a mandate" are clear. The ABC opinion piece Ending the squabble over election mandates - The Drum (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) pretty much sums up my opinion - unless we have an agreement between all sides (which isn't necessarily just Labor and the coalition) about how you get a mandate and what it covers, there are no mandates.
From the article:

" If the parties want, they can simply agree that election commitments should always be let through the Senate because the mandate from the public comes via the House of Representatives."

No, that's still ridiculous, because it means a party that wins by, say, 1% can implement their "campaign" policies, even though 49% of the population might be vehemently opposed.

There's simply no need for that sort of agreement, because if it's a policy that most of the population agree on, it will be a policy that the majority of representatives will agree on, and thus pass into law without significant opposition.

Hell, I've known governments to implement laws they promised not to. ;)

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

The crazy thing about the carbon tax is the negligible impact it had on CPI for FY2013. The economy hitting the wall may have helped contain prices but definitely no spike.

And they will again in the future but I doubt if a Liberal politician will be treated the same as Julia Gillard.

I reckon we'll see WorkChoices MkII next year and we'll see if there is any vitriol or if it is considered 'necessary' and therefore acceptable to lie about.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

If you can't tow the boats back, the LNP might as well bring out the government credit card and buy the boats back at the start. Woops, that's what they proposed anyway. And as an aside MP Scott Morrison questioning Indonesia and their sovereignty is not cool. Its a great way to score political points (and blame the not-stop-the-boats on someone else) but it offends our neighbours whom will up there with the major super-powers one day.

Why can't Tony turn back the boats? Oh wait he turned back the our Navy Boats!

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Both Mr morrison and the Indonesians agree that they have accepted back 50% of the boats that they have been asked to by Australia.
That is way better than the record under the ALP.
The last 3 weeks have seen the arrival of 60 people at Christmas island.
On average in 2012/13 6300 people would arrive in 3 weeks.
As well 77 have left Nauru/Manus Island to voluntarily return home.
I rate the efforts of the Abbott government much more as a win than a loss.
We really now are seeing the bias of the Fairfax papers and the ABC.

When all else fails, bring out the work choice herring.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Mmm

2-1 no other comment needed lol :)

Ha, was waiting for that and I thought it might have come a week earlier prior to your Mackems losing to Hull the same night Toon knocked off Chelski. Anyway, only one of us will be following a team in the Championship next season!

Back to the topic at hand ... The fun begins tomorrow. I can't imagine it will be a quiet first sitting for the Abbott government.

Yes.....both will guarantee a daily dose of one sided rubbish and biased opinion by party hacks. Suppose they have to do something to raise the ratings/numbers.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Return home? Why home? Weren't they seeking political asylum?

Probably because Australia has been paying them off to go back home. Has been happening for a while.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Abbott ramming it home on 2GB radio critising Indonesia..... not cool Abbott, not cool.

Just go buy those boats Abbott, easier. You said you would.

These clowns are so out of their depth it is simply a national embarrassment. Julie Bishop as Minister for Foreign Affairs - clueless and gormless.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

My post is about the politics of the issue. Yours is just another school boy attempt of sledging ;)

So let's examine your politics (sic).

The cost of living remains high because of the carbon tax - does it? Nothing to do with stamp duty or GST or income tax or rates or mining royalties or company tax or the cost of housing etc etc? And the compensation package for the carbon tax - were you too rich to receive any? A lot of people who the carbon tax would most impact did and I believe some of them actually came out in front. I would hazard a guess to say the Alan Jones "Bob Brown's cough" brigade would be over-represented in that regard, but that's conjecture on my part.

And we come back to the central question that you ducked - are you opposed to putting a price on pollution?

Bishop is more committed to Foreign Affairs than the other chappie who lasted how long before he quit?

Committed perhaps, capable, no.

It's not about a race to the bottom. I'm concerned we are starting to just how short on know-how this team guys really is.

As others have said, they have been in the Government for all of maybe, 8 weeks. If you still have the same opinion in 6-9 months time then maybe it has more cred. But at the moment, complaints about mismanagement seem more like sour grapes than legitimate claims.

Gosh, I thought Gillard was good in the first couple of months, although I detested the way she got there.
