Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Actually I think things are picking up since the election people are certainly spending more. I suppose it's because they have more confidence in the government and that the housing market is rising again.
I'm sure coming in the Christmas season has no bearing at all.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Yeah, I'm starting to see the same thing in our businesses + getting the same feedback from friends in different fields.....nice change from the last barren 6 years.
Let me get this straight. You're saying the last six weeks have been better than the preceding six years ?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Yes, but they've had six years to prepare for it.

Do you not understand the difference between being in Opposition and being in Government? The difference between Parliament sitting and not sitting?

Let me get this straight. You're saying the last six weeks have been better than the preceding six years ?

I will say that, most certainly. Just for a start, there is more dignity in the Government. We don't have a PM who think it is ok to post selfies of cuts on his face.

As far as business goes, we were lucky to whether the GFC; but the last 12 months have been trying. Now, it is almost like people are breathing again and making strategic decisions for the future, because suddenly they can see one.

We do, however, have one who thinks its OK to use public money to fund his triathlon habit.

Why anyone gets worked up about the silly "selfie" thing is beyond my understanding. Its impact on anything of significance is zero.

So on the one hand you're arguing the new Government could not have done anything effectual since the election, but on the other you're arguing their influence has suddenly turned sentiment from doom to joy ?

Wasn't the Labor government in office during the GFC? Therefore it seems, by your own admission, that their policies helped the country by ensuring we weren't exposed to the worst of it.

Have another read.......

I did, hence the reason I'm asking for clarification of what you actually meant, as opposed to what you wrote.

OK.

Starting - means there has been a change in customer forecasts/attitude/orders

Feedback - means friends in other fields of business are talking the same language as above.

Nice change - means these forecasts/attitudes/orders are a very welcome change compared to the past 6 years of trading.

All good stuff and a very welcome change.....I hope plenty of other businesses are experiencing the same thing.

Bully for you about the selfie thing; I think it is childish and immature for a PM to be doing them.

And Gillard's partner thought it was OK to use her Commonwealth car for his hairdrying business.

Just by winning the election they have had an effect on the social climate. I am perfectly happy with the way and pace that things are proceeding, but for several on this forum, clearly they have issues.

The Labor Government obviously was in office during that time. Why we survived had nothing to do with their policies at all. We survived because we were able to diversify and downsize. Our business was not in line for any of the stimulus packages. We did not receive a thing, nor did our client base, which shrank because many of our clients were in Government and that budget shrank. So in response to your statement, we survived despite the Government.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

do you think putting a price on pollution is a bad thing?

If it was part of a unified global solution then yep, go ahead and implement the scheme across the entire globe. However as soon as one party/country pulls out then an unfair situation has developed and it should be scrapped.

Doesn't normally if anything it's usually worse because people are spending money on gifts and less on themselves.

Actually I was trying to elicit a response from imaroo, but in the absence of that I will deal with your post.

So unless every government on the planet introduces a similar scheme to price carbon, we should scrap the whole idea? You don't feel that this is a situation where leadership is important? What other moral challenges can be ignored unless everyone else does something about them too? Slavery? Female genital mutilation?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

These clowns are so out of their depth it is simply a national embarrassment. Julie Bishop as Minister for Foreign Affairs - clueless and gormless.

She's never going to be able to drop her L plates, nor is the Minister for Compassion and Common Sense Scott Morrison. I'm betting that Julie wished that she'd stuck with what she was good at - murdering asbestos victims. She can't cut it on the world stage, and the Indonesians are wiping the floor with her at the moment.

I was enjoying listening to Chrissie Pyne defending the boats debacle on radio this morning - he at least shows good sense in talking about every portfolio except his own. When will President Credlin shut down that little loophole?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Time to prepare does not necessarily equate to good government.....

That's becoming more and more apparent with each passing day. This herd of amateurs is the very definition of a one-term government.

I realise you and 'roo are havin a great dance.

I went to correct my post but the net dropped out. I meant to say "first world" economies with developing nations given a finite period to introduce the agreed policy/mechanism.

Given the way most economies are staggering along why would we make ourselves less competitive?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

And you lot consider we were nasty to Gillard.

Actually I believe the word you used was "barren".

So the slight uptick in the last 6 weeks is a positive change from the last 6 years ? Ie: better than ?

I'm happy to take "childish and immature" over "greedy and vindictive".

Yes, some of us have issues with a rather unsubtle message from the current Government to the wealthy and powerful they have free reign, and to the poor they're going to get screwed at every turn.

I agree. We should forthwith remove all regulations on pollution, food standards, labour, and anything else. After all, they don't have them in China or India.

Who cares if we end up with waterways full of heavy metals, baby formula cut with melamine, children making clothes 12 hours a day for $5 and women getting fired when they get pregnant. We'll win the race to the bottom !

The difference between them spending money on themselves vs money on other people is what, exactly, from a business's perspective ?
