ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure Card

Impressed - hit the qualifying spend a few days ago and the 80,000 points have now posted to my Velocity account - and not even having to wait for the statement cycle to complete. Now to decide where and when to take the included flight.

I'm currently in Bangkok and need to withdraw some Baht from a local ATM using this card.

I've read the fine print many times but still can't come to a conclusion: will I actually be charged any fees beside the exchange rate for that day?

ANZ won't charge you any fee for using overseas ATM.
But you may need to pay immediate daily cash advance interest rates on the withdrawal amount unless your card is in credit.

To avoid this interest rate you would need to have already paid off any purchases made on the card and you would need to have paid additional cash to the card to the value of your ATM withdrawal.

However Thai banks will charge you 150-220 Baht for ATM withdrawals.

Some banks or money exchangers may give you a cash advance on the card over the counter, occasionally without the fee. But if using a money changer its best to check exchange rates and any additional costs.

scored another 2x lounge vouchers even though I got them back in Oct last year. Unless they are going by calendar year and not 12 months from sign-up.

Recently acquired one of these cards (after the recent Amex -> Krisflyer devaluation it no longer seemed worth paying the 3% fx) so got the card for the no fx fees and ATM withdrawals for a flat $5 (+ what local ATM provider may charge). Now after my first o/s trip using this card - all went well except the ATM withdrawal. The $5 flat fee only applies if the ATM in question allows you to select an account (ie does not default to credit) - well no ATM I used did this so each cash withdrawal was treated as a cash advance - but on looking at it after the fact - depending where you are in the statement cycle (and of course the amount of the cash advance) the interest may in fact be less than $5. Of course you can always transfer money to your card online to offset this but must cover the entire balance.

On calling the call centre on my return (as I was somewhat confused) - they reversed the interest charges.

Finally - beware - I have found that the ANZ internet banking site does not work properly using Safari - must use Chrome. Also since we have 2 cards (1 primary and one secondary) somehow (due to Safari issues) ended by setting up automatic payment of entire balance on due date on each card - guess what the balance got paid twice !!! Call centre said - well that's what you set up - really !!!

$5 fee ? Not sure what you mean. Was pretty sure this did not apply overseas.

I used this card when I in Europe last year and it worked as per T&C.
No cash advance fee for using overseas ATMs.
I did not have to select account type
I was aware that interest would accrue for cash advances so I made sure that I had no outstanding purchases owing and pre loaded the card prior to using ATM.

Edit
Just checked T&C on ANZ site.
"ANZ will also waive the cash advance fee if you use your ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures account to withdraw actual cash from a branch or ATM located overseas. A cash advance fee will apply to any other cash advances on your account. ATM operator fees may apply."

I think you may be confused. There is a $5 cash advance fee for ATM's in Australia.

To the best of my knowledge any cash withdrawal on a credit card is considered as a cash advance by all Australian banks, at home or overseas.

After several calls to ANZ customer service - here is my understanding of using this card in overseas ATMs:

  • Withdrawal from credit account - no fee (from ANZ) and no 3% fx but interest charged from the day you withdraw (unless card has a credit balance) - ATM owner may charge a fee which is passed onto the customer.
  • Withdrawal from linked cheque or savings account - $5 flat fee, no 3% fx and no interest charged.
  • It seems that many/most ATMs outside of Australia do not prompt the customer for account type but default to credit account
It's somewhat confusing particularly when you (ie me) get differing explanations from different ANZ customer service agents.

Of course you can offset the interest by keeping your account in positive balance but this needs to also cover purchases which may not be worth it.

Overall after one overseas trip so far - I'm happy with the card - my main concern is avoiding the 3% fx on purchases (and ATM withdrawals).

Is it just me or is this card made of a different material to other debit/credit cards out there?

The card just feels very flimsy compared with other cards I have.

I'm pretty sure it's the same, but it just feels different because the numbers aren't stamped into it, they're printed on the back instead. We're used to that feeling of the punched in numbers.

This card has a 50% bonus on Velocity transfers for May, so an effective transfer rate of 1.125 VFF/$ for the first $2k per month. Shame the limit is so low but it doesn't have some of the exclusions that eg Citi based cards have, eg it's fine for non-ATO govt payments.

Yeah a 50% is awesome. Having a monthly cap I don't go too hard on this card but will transfer to velocity before the end of the month

No. It's a standard travel agent booking in your name.

I booked a flight and already cancelled and all good.

Now waiting for the ~11 month window to open for June next year to book a "reverse trip" originating from Perth with my Velocity Amex before I cancel that as well.

There was a period when they cancelled the Amex and devalued the Visa that you could book the flight around renewal time, cancel the card shortly after and request a pro rata refund. Not sure if it's still possible now but worth a shot.

With the free return flight with this card, what happens if you don't take the return flight?

I'm planning to fly MEL-HBA, but am getting the ferry back from Devonport to Melbourne.

Will they charge any cancellation/no show fees?

It's booked like a regular "T" class commercial economy fare, so I suspect the same rules would apply to no-showing for a Getaway ticket you'd paid for. I can't say for sure, but I don't think anything would happen.
