Wow the knives have really come out from past players. All these stories about elitism etc which Clarke denies.

A friend claimed that the Australians threw their innings (the 60) to get rid of Clarke. Seems to have worked if that was the intention!

I remember that story when Hussey wanted to belt him for not wanting to celebrate a test win at the SCG but rather go see Lara Bingle.

The duality of our media in one papers front and back papers.

Simon Katich shirtfronted him in the dressing room about that.

As for throwing the innings, I don't think most of the Australian cricketers are secure enough in the team to "throw" their innings. May as well throw their test careers away.

Yeah I agree. No matter how much you dislike a fellow player, you want to win. Especially if your playing at the top level.

I still don't think we were ever given an official reason why Katich was dropped and test career ended when he was one of the consistent performers at the time.

Sorry I haven't reasd the entire thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned.

From a PR perspective I'd have been asking players to remove their hats with my company name on them when associated with this type of losing. While the logo on the uniform can't easily be removed, it's not as prominent as the cap. Every time you see 'losing' and 'defeat' you see Qantas.

I don't associate the sponsor with a teams actions, and I certainly wouldn't make the mistake that the Australian cricket team are flying planes etc ;)

You try to associate your product with success - not with losers (not debating the long-term accuracy of that statement... but losing in spectacular style in this case plus the fall out).

Yes, but you have to take the good with the bad... haven't Qantas been supporting the Wallabies for a while, with their first win since 2011 over the All Blacks occurring just the other day?

Found this quote:

"the Australians failed in a fashion that has seldom been seen on a dry, true pitch, being all got rid of in an hour and a quarter. The bowlers did wonders, but lack of nerve on the part of the Australians must have been largely answerable for such an astounding collapse".

1st Test at Lord's 1896 - Australia all out for 53.

And they say that history never repeats.

Talking about Ashes disappointments, how did I not know of Gary Gilmours' death in June??? Wisden - Gary John Gilmour

Grew up listening to him either shattering wickets or willow...and me being left handed as well, it gave me a connection....

Agreed, it was a match that Australia won the toss and batted and failed dismally. Except that in that match, in the Australian first innings there were 5 ducks, 3 players reached double figures and extras weren't the highest score.

Australia did make England bat again, plus 2 Australian players scored centuries and they lost by only 6 wickets: 1st Test: England v Australia at Lord's, Jun 22-24, 1896 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Good detective work. Yes I think they did better back then - at least putting up a fight in the second innings and setting a tricky target.

Some day we'll look back on that Test and laugh I hope...

And yes I remember hearing Gus Gilmour had died. One of my earliest memories was his 6-14 in the World Cup in 1975 against the Poms - all out for 94! I think he could swing the ball a bit.

The women doing a little better than the men.A similiar story.Reasonable start with first wicket down at 66 but then the collapse to 5-99.But they have recovered reasonably well to be 8-268 at stumps. This is a 4 day match.

Following the Womens' match and poor Jess just got out for 99 :o :(

100.5 Brunt to Jonassen, OUT
JL Jonassen lbw b Brunt 99 (259m 197b 10x4 0x6) SR: 50.25

They then declared 9/274.

A pity. But with nearly a session lost to rain it should be an interesting afternoon.Pity it's not being shown on GEM.

Agreed drron - she became the 2nd Aussie woman to get out on 99: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/women...st_runs_innings.html?class=8;id=289;type=team

A great start by the ladies, with Elysse Perry getting consecutive English wickets but missing the hat-trick.

2.1
Perry to Winfield, OUT
L Winfield c †Healy b Perry 1 (7m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

2.2
Perry to Taylor, OUT
SJ Taylor lbw b Perry 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

EA Perry 1.2-0-4-2

Great to see Alyssa Healy get a catch behind (yes, niece of Ian Healy and daughter of Ian's older brother Greg, with whom I have had a 30 year work association). Great figures for Ellise Perry early on, hope she can keep up the good work.

EngWn 31/2 (13.0 ov, CM Edwards 16*, HC Knight 12*, SJ Coyte 0/0) | Live Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Better makes that now 3/34 :D

Interesting quote from Lehman.

Ninemsn said:
While promising a "full and frank" review, Lehman said he retained great confidence in the future of Australian cricket, the coaching staff, his players and in the young players coming through.

If he and the selectors had confidence in young players coming through then why retain old(er) players out of form and not bring in the younger players?

As I said earlier:

But the key to the Australian cricket teams success has been striking that balance between seniority, experience and maturity.

It was sarcastic.
