Ashes Cricket in England 2013

Got so close yet so far.

Australian team looks competitive and England under pressure.

My original prediction was England 5-1 for the 10 tests but would not be surprised if Australia gets closer.

I certainly didn't expect England to perform, but if Haddin honestly didn't think he'd hit that, maybe he now understands how Broad felt :p

Still there was a pretty convincing noise. Hotspot was inconclusive for mine. I couldn't see a definite spot, but the ball did get a big flare on it. Anyway, good with the bad.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

DRS should be conclusive in my opinion if you give somebody out. A number of decisions for both teams IMO were dodgy. DRS should be like the umpire, they have to be 100% sure, no doubt.

Get rid of it. In fact get rid of all aids to umpiring. Bad umpiring decisions is part of the game - you win some and you lose some. The rules of Cricket were never intended to have millimetre precision anyhow. Perhaps they can use it for that entertainment extravaganze - T20 I think its called.

I watched the cricket for the first time in many years yesterday and what struck me is that they seemed to rely on video technology most of the time rather than just getting it right. It's really sad to see this (and a lot of other sports these days, let's be honest here!) go this way but it was only a matter of time. In the future we probably won't even have umpires and it'll all be done electronically...

To me it makes the umpire on the field redudant, and therefore the players have zero respect for them - "who cares what he thinks, lets just go to the technology"..The only technology I'd like to see the umpires being able to use is communication with the scorers to confirm boundaries, dismissals 7-ball overs etc..but they were able to do this in the past anyhow..

Can't believe the furore over not walking. Good grief, the only person in recent times to do that was Gilly and he used to get criticised for that in some quarters.

And let's face it, Chappell killed the gentleman's game of cricket with the underarm ball and the India league which is only about the millions, put the nail into the coffin.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Nope. As boring as watching paint dry...
Let's see.

It is much more exciting watching cars going around and around in circles.

Or the grunters that play tennis occasionally?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Was watching it last night and decided to go downstairs to watch it rather than watching in bed - managed to stay awake for all of the lunch break and then fell asleep just before it started again...

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I was going to start a thread on this when the Test began but didn't get around to it. Now it's interesting after the match is over to read all the impressions as they happened!

Does anyone ever wonder why someone with zero interest in cricket would bother to come in and post here? Really? I won't post in the horseracing forums as I don't care at all but no one cares that I don't care...

As for the comparisons of Broad with other "non-walkers" the difference is that this was so blatant. The ball can't just go to first slip without hitting bat or pad and his pad what nowhere near it. Caught behind is different, there's virtually no deviation and even the batsman can't always know if he's hit the ball - sometimes the noise is the bat hitting the pad or ground.

A few years ago there was the famously acrimonious Test vs India at the SCG (not the most recent one) where Clarke edged one to slip and stood his ground but was given out. He was rightly pilloried for it but at least the umpire was awake enough to right the possible wrong. Broad, strangely enough, walked later on where he nicked it behind...

But overall a great Test. As an Australian I am totally accustomed to losing these close games (less than 20 runs). Can I come out and say that we NEVER win such games? I can give you a list. See how many times Australia pops up on that list as the losing side in the last 30 years. I can tell you how often they won. Once.
Records | Test matches | Team records | Smallest margin of victory (by runs) | ESPN Cricinfo
When the boot is on the other foot and Australia is bowling the other side seems to always escape with a draw or a win or even a tie once.

But I do love this game. All else is mere time-wasting...

Averages for the Test are interesting:

Watson 29.5, Rogers 34, Cowan 7, Clarke 12.5, Smith 35, Hughes 40.5, Haddin 36, Siddle 6, Starc 0.5, Pattinson 13.5, Agar 61

Hughes is averaging 81 as he has only been dismissed once.

Man these Tests are close together! Starts again at 8pm (EST) tonight.

Remember the old days when we used to win the Ashes? They used to have a solid month of playing counties before the First Test and then games in between each Test. I'd like to see the team get more match practice over there outside the Tests and I don't mean ODIs.

I'd be happy with a draw at Lords to break our losing streak...
