Australian state border restrictions

Remember when we used to sit around the table excitedly sharing ideas and plans for travel?

Yesterday, after dinner, friends and I spent time on contingencies on how to re-arrange our SA-VIC-NSW road trip in early July.

I didn't know Qantas flew from Mt Gambier to Adelaide! And the strategic location of the road from SA to NSW north of the Murray River looks handy.

You don't need to go that way. There is an exemption if you enter NSW via the Sturt Hwy and didn't get out of the car in Vic. Buying something and getting a receipt just before you left would help you prove that.

Looks like South Australia also allows this going the other way and lets you get out of your car in limited circumstances.

We have a map of South East Australia on our dining table, with an idea for a plan to travel to SA via NSW (and possibly a small slice of Vic, we already know the road through Broken Hill. The idea hasn't yet morphed into a plan however!

You wouldn't want to miss Buronga (NSW) - the gateway to Mildura! :D

So evidently the Federal Government is wanting states to agree to allow interstate travel for fully vaccinated australians even when there are local lockdowns in place from July 1.

Id like to see this happen, as gives better certainty to making travel plans, although outside family reasons would you bother traveling into a locked down city/state if all restaurants are takeaway only and tourist attractions, theatres etc closed?

I used to love planning various worldwide future travel. Even though I know I can eventually do them, it just isn't the same and all the fun has been sucked out of it. I need to know for certain when I can travel and then I'll get my mojo back.

Booking return LHR or KRK (my final destination is Wieliczka) leaving Australia 1/7/2022 as soon as QFF bookings open (beginning of August as I calculate). Booked and something to actually (kinda) bank on. Up to a week home quarantine I could live with. NO Hotel Quarantine. Got my second Pfizer jab this morning.

They won't agree, unless they cut off the financial tap.
And he won't risk doing that at least until after the election. Suddenly after the election if he wins he'll probably make a change to not provide financial support if lockdowns impact vaccinated Australians that are not infected or close contacts.

I dont think it will hurt them to cut off the tap to anyone who is eligible for a vaccine who choses not to get one. The next fedeal election hedges on the results in NSW and Qld, its why they were able to hold out providing any financial assistance to Vic until it ticked past a week. The feds quite rightly do not support statewide lockdowns for localised outbreaks and wont do anything that encourages them.

A question for the AFF brains trust.

Is someone from regional VIC allowed to travel to NSW from June 11 12.01am without isolating?

the rules seem vauge (or I have missed something), NSW is lifting its stay at home rules, for people that arrived after 27th, so seems new arrivals are now ok to not isolate, but need to fill in a declaration and follow VIC health orders. VIC health orders do not say one way or another about regional Victorians traveling interstate, are not limited by reasons or distance to travel. It all leans to a yes but no one has said outright it’s OK, as far a I could find.

any thoughts?

The updated rules are on NSW website already. The requirements are here; if you came from anywhere in Vic you have to fill in a border declaration and follow the stay at home rules. But note the caveat - the rules change at midnight tonight
From 12.01am on Friday 11 June, NSW Health will lift a stay-at-home order for people in NSW who have been in Victoria since 4pm on Thursday 27 May.
Only if you've been in a place of high concern would you still need to self isolate.

This is the revised concerns notice. Only people who were in the long list of contact venues are places of concern from tomorrow. The rest of Vic will be good to go.

Though if you are over 25km from MEL airport staying within 25km of home to get there is going to be impossible in any case so most Melburnians can't get to the airport legally tomorrow anyway.

I think Sydney is 25km from home also... not sure how they fine you once you get there.

Thanks, the general gist seems to thinks it’s OK which is what I thought, 25km limit only applies to Melbourne so Regional Vic travelers would be ok.

Though there seem so be quite a few travelling anyway.... maybe they are ALL from 25km/regional VIC? Or maybe you are allowed to drive to the airport anyway...?

Thanks; I didn't know those details, but I thought you could always stop for fuel & food on the way while transiting Victoria? I have several friends about to escape the Tasmanian winter by driving through Vic from the port of Melbourne up to NSW and QLD and had plans to stop like that if they couldn't hold their breath the whole time.

But as far as our trip is concerned, although the problem is likely to be over by the time we travel, our thinking on the route isn't so much about NSW but Tasmania, when we have to return. Our mob have very twitchy border fingers and for the sake of more peace of mind we would be OK with a bit of a diversion. But as I said, looks like the current Vic outbreak is in its waning stage and Tas has just taken rural Vic off its hot spot list.

Thanks, I missed that bit. James Merlino was asked at a presser yesterday about the 25km and whether Melbournians could fly, and the answer was "no, they can't".

I am not sure that the restriction around WA entry after coming into contact with people who have been in VIC still applies (according to a call to the WA covid hotline). The relevant direction on the g2gpass seems to be from November last year, is there a more recent source used in this article?

Unless for one of several reasons.

During the height of Melbourne’s second wave, when restrictions were most intense I looked into it (as we were leaving for overseas, a permitted reason) and we could even get a lift to the airport from someone (although we chose the low risk path of Uber).
