Australian state border restrictions

I was in the supermarket today and thought I'd chanced upon a stash of RAT kits and gleefully reached for a packet. Then sheepishly returned the pregnancy test kit to the shelf

The RATs arent on the shelf, they are behind counter with the cigarettes as high demand means likely to be stolen.

The funny thing is that QLD said it’s too hard to change their border pass website and said just ignore what it says and say you’ve had a PCR test even if you haven’t.

Kind of makes a mockery of the whole system.

And the border opens for a free for all on Feb 5? Yeah righto.
Hint in today's presser that the previously published post-opening restrictions will be tightened. Time will tell whether that's for the WA populace, inbound people, or as I'd put my money, both.

Wouldn't be surprised. Based on the post-opening restrictions announced, WA would just follow the trajectory of other states.

What exactly are they doing to prepare hospitals for the apparent impending doom?

We are flying back today, the PCR test was taken early on Boxing Day, still do not have the results. After calling the SA Covid line the agent advised she did not know what would happen when we arrive in SA, some people are being asked for test results while others are not. We are taking the punt we will get back in one way or another.
+1 rang SA health too and was told entry without a test would be at the discretion of the Police at the border. We eventually found RAT kits available about 150km away so a 300km return trip it was to pick them up.
I'm happy to conform to regulations but the current situation is even making placid me wild with anger.

I do find it somewhat funny and sad that again people are pointing the finger at the feds when the states (certain states at least) were responsible for the overwhelming of PCR test sites and then shifted as a reaction to RATs, without procuring any. But somehow this is all Canberra's fault.

Edit: Canberra are not blameless but hardly the main reason for any of this chaos.

Border checkpoints have been removed. Random SAPOL patrols may pull you over and check details but I’m not hearing of that happening

Interesting.
I'll confirm on 1 January when we drive into SA.
Mind you, with all the angst we have been put through to comply with the entry requirements only to find I could have saved myself a wasted day plus the expense, I'll be no less fuming.

A spokesperson for SA Police said authorities are also removing static checkpoints at main roads on its borders with other states, with roving patrols enforcing compliance with border directions.

Our drivers are reporting this to be the case

Good luck and I think you should be fine

With 2222 cases in Queensland today, I have no idea why they haven’t stood down border controls.

Pharmacies here in Launceston do have RAT tests but as said upthread they are under the counter. You have to ask and a limit of 1 box per customer.

I can't he;p wondering if some enterprising individuals will start oiffering used negative RAT tests for sale.

Situation in Tas now: (my bolding)

Tasmania has become the last state to scrap the requirement for arrivals from high-risk Covid areas to have a PCR test within 72 hours of travel.

Premier Peter Gutwein on Thursday said such arrivals would instead be required to state that they had a RAT or rapid antigen test.

He conceded they would not need to show proof of a RAT negative test, but could be fined if later found to have lied, while visitors over the next two weeks would receive a RAT kit on arrival.

Similarly, close contacts required to quarantine for seven days would undertake RAT tests, rather than PCR tests, unless they tested positive via a RAT test. Public Health would supply RAT tests to those required to use them.

Going by what @drron said about our Health guys (Not Happy, Jan and already wanting to close the border), I suspect there may be a few hospital admisssions ... for apoplexy ...

I am not sure what they cost over the counter as in SA it is near on impossible to find them. A quick search on eBay would suggest they are being sold online. If looking at the sold items most seem to be from the same seller and I would not even trust the test kits are real.
