Australia could still be faced with lockdowns when the country reaches the 70 per cent vaccination target set by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the Health Minister has conceded.

Australia could still be faced with lockdowns when the country reaches the 70 per cent vaccination target set by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the Health Minister has conceded.

Earlier this month, national cabinet backed the vaccination target in order to move to the next phase of reopening. Under phase B of the national plan, Australians would be rewarded with greater freedoms, but the detail has yet to be worked out.

Speaking with Nine’s Today on Tuesday, Health Minister Greg Hunt said Australians could still expect to face lockdowns despite higher vaccination rates.

“The Doherty modelling has indicated if we have 70 per cent of full vaccination in Australia, the need for lockdowns is less, but it's not an absolute end to them,” he said.

NT reopened to South East Queensland today - just need a border pass as always, but no exemption or quarantine, so business as usual:

Good on you for the politcal prognosticating, but I don't see the connection made in the article, or seemingly by you, between what the Fed Health Minister says, and 'lockdowns' - which are imposed by state governments, often, as we have seen, pretty capriciously and sometimes on erroneous data!

I think the PM stated that three Premiers/Chief Ministers were looking at the details of what Phase B and Phase C would look like. Can't remember which States/Territories were stated to be involved in that discussion.

TAS, NT and Vic, from memory. But no matter what 'National Cabinet' (ie including all State and Territory leaders) agrees, as we know, the state leaders can then go off and do what they like! And the electoral history to date will embolden governments yet to go to the polls to lockdown, lockdown and lockdown!

I've said before - any national 'plans' announced now will only result in disappointment.

My prediction is that the current mess will continue until there is a cohesive national plan. Currently, there is always going to be one State that is in a worse condition than its neighbour. That neighbour has nothing to gain but much to lose by relaxing restrictions. Two months later the position may be reversed but political memory is short.
There will come a point where the country as a whole would benefit from from broad, but mild restrictions, as opposed to shutting down entire States. I really can't see a Covid free Premier making that call!

Tas now actively fining arrivals who don't have an approved Pass.

A family of three travelling from a high-risk Queensland area are the latest offenders to breach Tasmania’s border restrictions after illegally entering the state without approval on Monday afternoon.

The adults aged 58, 51 and 21 copped a $2335.50 fine after arriving into the state via plane without a Good to Go pass.

They have since been directed into a Government quarantine facility.

Tasmania Police said although the trio had submmited travel applications, they had been rejected and were not classified as essential travellers as they had not met relevant critiera.

I'm not expecting that there's any prospect of it happening. I'll just wait until the Indian Pacific people contact me.

Flight PER-SYD is a QF J award booking, so no issues cancelling that. But not having been outside WA since January 2020, I was looking forward to the ride - and they had changed the bird from an A330 to a B787.

Hmmm. I have had several approvals issued pretty much as I was on my way to the airport, even though I submitted them many days before. I'm thinking that if they are going to fine people who have quite possibly applied in good faith, they need to provide clear and transparent timelines as part of the approval process.
The G2G system could be good but the wrong people are at the controls!

Wow. Looked at the fares and thought, and considered the number of NSW-leery states involved. Went for moderate risk, seats at the boxing day test in MEL. Losing hope of making it to Hamilton in SYD in November.

The Ashes may be delayed for a year because of issues with quarantine and additionally not allowing family members travel to Australia. Another cluster.

I live in Brisbane and had to cancel a trip to Hobart for last weekend, but I checked the Tasmania Covid website just to see what they said about SEQ and it's pretty clear who can and can't enter Tasmania from restricted areas, and the G2G pass can only be obtained the day before travel.

Sounds like they just decided to go hoping they'd be able to enter Tasmania. Looks like they will, but for two weeks in quarantine.

Foreign sport stars are going to find restrictions here increasingly unacceptable if they aren't eased to roughly match what they face overseas. State borders are much less of a concern than international travel and quarantine requirements when it comes to hosting international sport here. I would expect that most Australians attending an Ashes match aren't travelling interstate to do so, anyway. I've only travelled interstate to attend an Ashes match once myself and that was several years ago.

SA has a state election in March. The Premier has been riding on popularity over his shutdowns, (our current zero status is something he won't risk) then there won't be anything from SA until after the election. But the current mask wearing and restrictions with no community spread for a few weeks I wearing a bit thin. Hell, we haven't even been given a sewage warning.

It's a rolling cycle, Victoria was basket case of Australia last years, NSW is now, maybe WA will be basket case of Australia in 2022? Maybe QLD? Someone has to take a turn.

hamilton starts in Melb next March - I’ve got my seats but will I get to go but they do have a generous Covid refund policy …..I’m not sure if I’ll go to the AuS Open in 22 (if applicable)..been going for over 20 years but the Covid safe measures left a lot to be desired….not to mention the appalling crowd behaviour …
