Australian state border restrictions

Not the Olympians' fault, but the AOC should have done a better administrative job - Howard Springs or somewhere much more likely to be 'acceptable' like WA.....
Agree. Many athletes have gone to NT or WA which should have been fine. But in reality NSW was doing fine when the planning and logistics for the games was being done.

So clearly someone snoozing at the wheel (or is it schmoozing), because the changes re: onward quarantine from NSW was in place for sometime (I'm feeling even before the first athletes returned)

Yes, after our last outbreak which must be a month ago now? Yes, we were watching the Games start on our first three days of lockdown, that the double iso was reinstated. It was in place last year, then it was dropped at some time - no announcement, but reinstated four weeks ago. So known before the athletes departed on the plane.

Perhaps the charter flights should have been organised to take atheletes to their home state for HQ. Tokyo is close enough that direct flights to all Aus capital cities are feasible.

Of course that would expose that the arrivals caps are so low in some of those states they coudlnt hope to cater for athletes and their hangers on, from their own state.

I’d presume these fines can be taken to court.
It's a rolling cycle, Victoria was basket case of Australia last years, NSW is now, maybe WA will be basket case of Australia in 2022? Maybe QLD? Someone has to take a turn.
If it’s ever WA’s turn, will we notice, or care. Their absolute leader seems to be setting himself up for a visit by karma, with his constant sniping at other states, who haven’t been as lucky.

South Aussie Olympians in NSW quarantine are going to be required to spend another 14 days in quarantine in SA but at home. Given our latest outbreak was caused by someone not having to quarantine after NSW stint, this was to be expected. Everyone else has to do it so Olympians no different.
Howard Springs should be considered as federal or external, Federal government needs to go and tell each state to stop acting like children, once a person flys into any state and once the 14 days completed then you are free to travel to your home state and residence.

Howard Springs should be considered as federal or external

Howard Springs is now being managed and run entirely by NT. But I agree no one should have to double iso provided they go straight to aiport via private transport.

Well, I can understand why SA is doing this because someone just four weeks ago, two people coming from NSW quarantine, caught covid and brought it back into SA and sparked off our 7 day lockdown when they spread it to perhaps 20 other people who dined at two different venues. It was only picked up when the older man got very sick and attended hospital a couple of days later. Sent approx 20 medical people into isolation as well as around 4000 people.

As I said, just four weeks ago someone coming straight from quarantine in NSW started our recent outburst and caused a 7 day lockdown.

He has been at it again this afternoon.

Remember, he has basically trademarked the term "we reserve the right to go our own way"

I would genuinely love to know what the proposed “solution” to this issue in NSW is. It is currently under amongst the most draconian restrictions on the planet. What more do these attention seekers like McGowen want?

And let’s remember, their goal is the insane “Covid Zero”. Something that no jurisdiction on earth will ever achieve. This is getting beyond insane, and I sympathize with the NSW government who seem to want to take a pragmatic approach, however are being bullied by every other jurisdiction in this place we call a “country”.

I read other day that Howard Springs is at over capacity
Has capacity of 2000 & currently holding 3000 ppl. Go figure.
No room for Olympian returnees.

Apparantly lot of interstate holiday makers willing to put themselves into Howard Springs at their own cost, then travel to other states (WA) and not spending their holiday cash in NT.

That loophole was closed a couple of days ago.

No, NSW is not more draconian than elsewhere. I've read the list of businesses that must close, and its pretty similar to the restrictions that are imposed in lockdowns in other states. There are minor differences (e.g. construction vs bunnings, real estate inspections) but they're pretty much the same. NSW has imposed further restrictions on movement out of the most hit LGAs, while other states just impose restrictions on movement in the whole city - or region in the case of SEQ.

The solution was to go early and go hard. NSW has now learnt this - see the immediate lockdowns in Byron, Dubbo, Walgett. Same as happens elsewhere. It is positive that the restrictions in the eight LGAs are appearing to work in Fairfield at least. I hope your situation eases before too much longer. Much of my family is in NSW and I share their pain.

Cheers skip

Olympians are there. I heard an interview this moring from Howard Springs - a description in this case of 4 bedrooms sharing a common area, with shared balconies (might have that a bit wrong). What's the source for 3000/2000 (not doubting, just curious)?

Will find the article I read re over capacity, it wasn't abc, but attached a similar story below not backing my claim up, ha!

Thanks

BBC (UK) are discussing what SA is doing with the Olympic Athletes and not in a nice way. Maybe we needed something like this to shake things up with regards to vaccinated people.
My understanding is that it is about a dozen athletes as the remainder of SA athletes are returning via other cities.
Whilst not defending the actions it’s precisely the same for anyone wanting to return to SA after quarantining in SYD.
Imagine the backlash if the Olympian’s got special treatment.
The rules have been in for several weeks so, I can’t believe alternate plans weren’t made.

While I’d like to think that so I suspect not many SA residents (nor any other states in case anyone thinks I’m having a go at SA) are regular BBC viewers. Not that they shouldn’t be.

Agree. As posted upthread I can understand why this has happened. It was reinstated about four weeks ago after the Modbury issue. At least they are letting them back in I guess.
