Couch to 10K. Thats steps - I aint running!

Between 2014 and 2016, I let myself go quite badly. I became very sedentary, didn’t watch what I ate and ballooned to 103.5kg. I decided things had to change and so I began walking every day at the end of August 2016.

I’m down a smidge under 27 kilos since then. I’ve written about it on my (very infrequently visited) blog - www.themorningrun.blog

I now run every morning of the week, except for Sundays where I exercise during the day with a more relaxed walk in various locations. One sleep in per week is a necessity!
 
My garmin tells me this morning that its seeing the pattern, that I turn sloth-like on the weekend or Ive died as so few steps are recorded :)

This morning it was 3 x up and down the hill again, felt good and calf didnt seem as twiggy as last week so will keep plodding along.

Well done to the others for the mammoth efforts, Im impressed!

My husband had a big week too, he did 17K steps on Friday but it also records/converts his swimming and swimming seems to earn you a lot of steps.

I lost ~15kgs last year from April-August. Walking had nothing to do with the weight loss. It's definitely the excess food. Need to keep on top of it but the discipline is so difficult.

The 10k daily steps are a bit misleading imnsho.
10k steps might raise your fitness level from 0>5 when a decent longevity contribution is probably 50….
Better than nothing though and the first steps to fitness are always the most challenging

You had a great result!

For me, it’s been the combination of daily exercise with watching what I eat. I refused (this time) to count calories or stick to a meal plan. It’s come down to portion control, eliminating most take-out food, and relying more than ever on good home cooking with whole foods.

I haven’t cut out anything in particular, I’ve just adjusted my attitude towards eating but have no problem in enjoying treats every now and then, the key for me being in limited quantities and occasions.

The exercise has now become part of my life, and I honestly could never have imagined I would enjoy running, but given enough time to get here and starting slow, I managed to do it.

Again, good on everyone for taking those steps to make better choices day in, day out. Whether it’s food, or parking further away from the shops to get a few extra steps in, it really all adds up.

Why? Or are you saying don't count the steps taken at golf?

I still average between 8,000-10,000 steps/day. I enjoy walking. The laziest day and I still do a minimum of 6,000 steps on that day.

Just remember that what works for one person may not work for another.
 
Today I did 90 minutes walking instead of 30 minutes. In my volunteer work I took a group of children trick or treating.
 
Nice.

No walk this morning as I had to take down all the Halloween decorations, which seemed to take longer than putting them up so Im claiming a bit of bend and stretch exercises.
 
I don't know if I am loosing weight but all this exercise sure has me loosing inches.Belt has come in 2 notches and shirt that was tight 5 weeks ago is fitting perfectly today.
Losing weight makes everything feel looser?

Ive been trying to forego the office daily lunch grab and bringing in a small baggie of cheese, carrots, some dip ect, just trying to keep it light. Not a big change but noticing it in my wallet and not feeling as full during the day.
 
My body is rebelling against my attempt at a diet again.

I graze through the day. Small bite size snacks were enough to keep me going through the day. This trick now not working as I'm feeling hungry all the time.

Haven't tried either. The 5-2 could be ok but I just don't think I could function effeciently at work with only 600 calories twice a week.

I know I can lose weight on a straight high protein diet consuming ~1600 calories/day. It's just a matter of being in control and not allowing the body to override those controls.
 
Lots of meetings yesterday so not many steps and back and legs felt stiff and achy for not moving around more.

This morning was up and down the hill 3 times again. I think its time to attempt 4.
 
My high aspirations have so far yielded little , other than overt joy to be back in paradise.
Fast weight gain means ( for me ) that the first 20% is easy to lose and this is done.

My every day active life isn't enough to peel off the rest and I must start some type of exercise discipline with
a set goal and check levels along the way.
If I do not do this , "weasel" rationalising will occur and progress will stagnate.

Had a blunt internal discussion last night about a mid week glass of wine, as a successful day with a goal achieved usually allows an indulgence ; reason won and it's a bottle a week until we get back to the right weight.
