Double SC Promo [December 2010]

Like all companies these days, data mining is used to obtain greater intelligence on consumer spending patterns and then targeting them for specific products or promotions. David Jones does it and I suspect Qantas does it as well. Hence parameters used to get data would leave out some and include others.
And these types of promos are attractive to some types of people who travel very frequently, where things like lounge access, luggage allowances etc, which is deemed to be trivial matter for none frequent fliers, are very important to road warriors. For me this offer does peak a interest because higher status would enable me to check in more luggage and perhaps better seat selection in cattle class etc etc. However once i am done with frequent flying due to change in job, these offers wont mean much to me. So its all relative.

These kinds of promo's are generally (where the correct process is put in place) targetting specific members (or groups) where the business (QF) believes they can best obtain benefits (read profits), whilst at the same time there is a corresponding win/win for the client/customer/member (increased status credits/status uplift).

Don't forget, the average travelling public doesn't look laterally at these kind of offers to "squeeze the lemon", as we may do.

Now, just what information they (QF) use to work out who is on the list, sometimes is a bit nebulous ;).
I have to agree wholeheartedly with Lindsay on this one.

I cannot understand why people feel left out, persecuted or unloved because they may have missed out on this, or other similar promos. To me it is like everything else in life. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose and sometimes we make our own luck.

I got last years double SC promo and managed to make use of it by modifying a trip I was going to do anyway, so it worked for me. Mrs straitman did not get it but probably would not have used it if she had.

This time around I did not get the promo and Mrs straitman did get it. We will look at moving a trip that was tentatively planned though I suspect it won't happen and probably thus won't use it. I won't lose any sleep over it either way.

So flying needs to be completed by March 31, 2011 and extra SC will be credited with in 6 weeks of travel.

My membership year ends end of March, so would the bonus SC be put into the following year's requalification if my travel was well placed?

Hmm just playing around with a few airfares
cheapest I found was a J class MEL-NAN for $1355 and would net 400 SC's.
Depart Fri night 4 Mar and arrive back Sunday night 6 Mar

Perhaps, but in the last promotion I am fairly sure they claimed within 6 weeks as well. They actually posted a day or two after the flight.

Try plugging in BNE-MEL-MAN.

I think you will find the price is the same. (It was last night)

I don't believe they would. SC added retrospectively to my account went in as the date of the flight and were not counted in the subsequent years tally

Ok tried the BNE option and this is what I came with. All in J class with double promo. No stay required in Nadi (though might as well enjoy Fiji for a couple of days!)

BNE-MEL = 60SC
MEL-NAN = 200 SC

Return
NAN-SYD = 160 SC
SYD-MEL = 40 SC
MEL-BNE = 60

Not sure how many points would be earned.

$1314.99

Agreed.

SCs post for the year of travel, which in this case is unfortunate.

Just over 10k, or just under if you’re not WP already. The points are minimal, it’s the SC’s that make it worth it.

Each domestic J ticket on that route will earn 1250 points, so if you did BNE-MEL-SYD vv that’d be 5000 alone.

Better put the flak jacket on Sam, claiming 10000 frequent flyer points as being minimal on AFF is akin to slandering someone ;), and its closer to 15K than 10 as a WP:

  • 3500 for the domestic sectors
  • 4376 for the international milage
  • 1094 for the international cabin bonus
  • 4376 for the WP bonus

Add in another 5K for the loyalty bonus and you are close to 20K which is a hobart express run or another 100 SC paid for!

I wasn’t sure if the WP bonus counted, but you’ve flown it so I’m sure you’re right.

I did think about mentioning the loyalty bonus, but that’s not from the flights really, so left it out.

And I still think 10k isn’t amazing :p well especially compared to say 16,000/$89 and all the points that everyone here earns on their CC spend. Comparatively, it’s low.

That's how l feel Sam. You do all this flying, get 100% bonus on as a WP, then QF release a CC which gets you 16k points for $89. 2 upgrades at least on Domestic sectors for $89, not bad 'eh?

Haven't posted in ages, but thought I'd just share that in response to this offer from QF, and with the help of all the posts above, I have secured a MEL-SIN-SYD FASA for 180k in points and around AUD$500... Took a bit of looking, and I booked it as two one-way journeys - as I couldn't seem to get the return at a low points value once I had selected the initial flight at the fewest points I could find.

I explored SYD-MNL as an option and to my surprise it came up with 13 million points required.... What the?

So my first flight in the A380, assuming they're running sweetly by March, will be in First! Never thought I would see the day when I sampled F in the 380. Thanks everyone. Oh and this will see me more than re-qualify for platinum.

Wow, l think that you have now got first prize in the thread that was looking for the most expensive ASA around. I think that OZ-Mexico "somewhere" was around 2 million. SYD-MNL for 13 million, QF had better lay out the red carpet for that one! LOL

straitman has also shaved $300 off my NAN J Run by selecting different dates.
