Double SC Promo [December 2010]

I am totally stumped as to why QF would display JQ flights on their website. I wish there was an option to turn these flights off.

+1 from me.

I have "suggested" this in one of my earlier posts. A "Click on This" to "eliminate JQ" when searching for flights on QF website would be fantastic. I have found out (from this website - AFF), how separate QF and JQ are. Try searching for a J Class seat, SYD - BKK. see how many JQ options turn up. What a joke!

No disagreements here; more search options = good! However, there are swings and (OT) roundabouts. Why? On a random date next March, a JetFlex fare PER-SYD-HNL is $1,506.16, all in Y. Same day, same flights, a StarClass fare is $1,541.16 and that books into J on a QF flight PER-SYD. Assuming QF earn rates, that looks like an additional 60 SCs for $35 and rather more leg room all the way to Hawaii!

I dare say it'd be more than 60 extra SC as the SYD-HNL leg will earn as business as well. Also isn't the starclass fare searched and booked on the jetstar website. I thought a major problem with searching on the qantas website was being discussed. Simply put JQ should be excluded when there are flights available with QF on the route.

so ... if I were to fly to Nadi with my wife for a week, can anyone recommend a good (but affordable) place to stay? Priority on white, sandy beaches as seen in tourist brochures :) It's bad enough that I'd be dragging her via MEL & SYD, so I need to make sure the accommodation is nice and trip advisor has too many mixed reviews.

Colleague of mine booked the Sofitel through a TA (can't think of the name now) and was happy with it and not expensive at all...

I am thinking of doing this also but planned to use a weeks timeshare that we stand to lose shortly. It seems though that most of the timeshare resorts in Fiji are about 150 or so km from the airport.

I've delayed my return by a day (now Mon 28) so that I have a full day to look around, and maybe visit the surround islands. The Hilton has a points stretcher award for my dates so instead of 35000 HHonors points a nite, it is only 21000...so I've booked 2 nights.:)

A tip from jdlover23; book both as one ways; the ex Nan on the Qantas Fiji website...you can knock off another $150+ off the ~ $1340 if you book it this way cf to an international multicity return from Australia.

Damnit. I've got 100k HHonors points I could use for this too. Hrm.

If only your trip was in March i'd come along, but my FF year is end of Feb (and i've already got WP sewn up until 2012 at present).

As above, it is planned for March… haha :)

I might also be joining the trip, so I dare say two WP’s could be better than one ;)

Hrm. Let me see how 'generous' Woolworths are going to be with my credit limit (it's been 3 weeks since I faxed a pay slip and they still haven't acknowledged they have it, just 'we have a big backlog'). Christmas is bad for me to book trips, Jan would be fine. Need that 55 days from them ;)

Will get back to you guys when it's confirmed what they'll do for me, then look at burning some of my HHonors points. Could be a nice weekend!

In case you have forgotten, to get the double SCs (if you got the offer), you must register and pay for your international QF tickets by Dec 21st.

Thanks.

I have made a booking today and we have Row 3A & B SYD-NAN and Row 1J & K NAN-SYD.

Is this for the end of March, or a different period?

I have the money I needed to pull this off so am very close to booking for late-March at this stage, staying 2 nights like kpc.

I wonder if you are going to enjoy the free IC mini bar ;););), might be tempted to make a quick trip myself since I still have a nested outbound leg I can change?

I have not done the hotel accommodations yet but it is certainly tempting.

I'll publish the flights a little later when I have it all a bit more together.

Interesting...

Never got the original email promo but just got my QF Dec points update email and what happened to be there? double SC promo offer. :)

Was there a glitch in their initial mailouts? Or have the voices of the people been heard (and acknowledged) by the powers that be?

Can be VERY difficult to find, unless you want to go out to an island, or drive for many miles from the airport.

I have driven from Nadi (in the west) to Suva (in the east) and I have stopped over in most of the resort along the coast but haven't found a white sandy beach yet.

You need to go to one of the islands some of which are 30-60 minutes away from Denarau Island.

I've been sucked in by the double SC promo.

I'm doing ADL-BNE-MEL-NAN-SYD-MEL-BNE-ADL in J between 21/1/11 and 24/1/11.

I've booked the positioning flights ADL-BNE and BNE-ADL as separate JASAs for 30100 points each. I’ll only have carry-on luggage.

The other flights cost $1350 thanks to this thread.

I don’t “need” the SCs as I already have 2000 this year and by March 31st I would get to 2400 without this trip anyway. So that’s a very handy 50,000 points.

The real benefits of this trip to me are:

  • I get to sit in business class on a 747 for the first time in my life (I know the hard product is very dated).
  • I get to spend a couple of days sitting in J with free booze all the way (I spend my real life in Y). I like flying.
  • I get to spend about 8 hours in the MEL F Lounge for lunch & dinner. I’ve been to the SYD F Lounge 3 times since February (when I first hit WP), but never MEL.
  • I earn about 20,000 points including loyalty bonus.
  • I get to spend 2 days in Nadi and I won’t be contactable. And the exchange rate is really good.
  • I get cheap smokes and scotch on the way back.
  • I get 500+ lifetime SCs. I'm closing in on LTS and hoping to get to LTG.
  • As I will earn 3000 SCs this year including this trip, I figure I’m more likely to be comp’d WP the next year if I don’t requalify. I expect to do less work travel next year but more international to take full advantage of WP while I have it, with my QFF points.
So that seems to be pretty good value to me. Especially as it is all J and I can cancel whenever I like at no cost in either points or cash.

I’m not all that happy at burning 60,000 points on the positioning flights though. If I can get return flights for a reasonable price I’d rather pay the cash and keep the points. I’m saving points for 2*Y RTWs and one J RTW which I want to do in 2011/2012. Those 60,000 points will let me book it a few months earlier.

My concern is that I’m cutting the positioning flights a bit fine. I have 2 hours before the BNE-MEL leg, but only 45 minutes before the BNE-ADL leg on the way back. This is the last Qantas flight of the day so if I miss the connection I’m screwed. At least as a JASA I’d get the points back, rather than losing a sale fare.

I assume Qantas won’t look after me if I miss the connection because it’s on different PNRs. Is that right, or will they apologise profusely for making me miss the connection and put me in a 5* hotel in Brisbane for the night? I am WP after all!

At least if the outbound positioning flight has a problem I can cancel the trip, go home, and get my points and cash back. I would lose money on the hotel booking though.

The alternative is to buy cheap Virgin Blue or Qantas positioning flights. If I go with VB I’ve got no chance of any favours if something goes wrong even though I’m Velocity Gold. I’d lose the fare as well, although the Qantas flights would be refundable.

I wonder how helpful Qantas would be if I had non-refundable Qantas positioning flights? I might ring and ask them.

I think my current plan with the JASAs is the safest and most enjoyable. If some good paid flight deals come up I’ll have to reconsider.

If anyone has any advice or experience of missed connections on different PNRs I’d really appreciate it.

Thank you to all the contributors on this thread, I couldn't do it without you.
