Re: The totally off-topic thread

Don't forget one of the more important Blues players,Peter Sterling was born in QLD.
We went to school together. He was at Patrician Brothers & I was at Our Lady of the Rosary. Many a Wednesday night spent at Balmain to watch him play in the Commonwealth Bank Cup. He had hair back then.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

...
I don't know about heavily one-sided either, because like I mentioned, NSW won the Origin in 2014, breaking a long QLD streak. And before QLD had the streak, the overall score was just about even or actually favoured NSW. Although it seems that QLD "depends" more on players not actually born in its state than NSW, I'm not sure the changes or what not in the eligibility rules primarily resulted in what seems like now a "one-sided" match. The rules on eligibility do my head in.. ...
The reason that SoO has been so onesided for the last decade or so is that Queensland has had playing for them at least 4 or 5 of the best rugby league players in the world over that period.

Put Cameron Smith, Johnathon Thurston, Cooper Conk, Greg Inglis, and Billy Slater in any side and that side would be very hard to beat.

It is no accident that the last time NSW won a series, one of those players (being the reigning Dally-M medalist) broke their arm in the first half of game one while QLD were leading 4-0. From that time until the end of game two, NSW outscored QLD 18 to 8 to take the series. It's a good thing for NSW that year that it's not done on aggregate since the half-back returned for game three where QLD won 32 - 8.

These players are getting older and will eventually retire (I doubt Slater will play another SoO) and things are likely to become less one sided.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I'll just leave this here.
So you are saying the State of Origin series for the past 36 years is quite close. In fact NSW were leading the series wins comfortably before the current once in a millenium freakish streak by Queensland? NSW have also scored more points with less wins.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Some tough tipping this weekend in the AFL. Hope I can maintain my lead at the top of the table, but not confident.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

After a series of blunders I am now about 6,000 off the lead in the AFL tipping. I crashed and burned moving from 300th to nowhere over 3 weeks of trying to catch up to the leaders. At least I am still just ahead in our family group and I really know bugger all about the AFL footy game as it is played in 2016.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Except that the players for each state were determined by the state competition of the player, not the state of birth. NSWRL Comp had more money and got all the good players from both Queensland and NSW. So Queensland born players were in the NSW state team. Is this really that hard to understand?

Given the inability of NSW to consistently field a competitive team, it is pretty clear that little brother is NSW. Hence the need to pretend no one cares about Origin. But I assume that you think the little brother is Queensland, in which case the word "trying" is wrong. It's actually "Always outdoing big brother".

Let's not forget the kiwis who end up,playing for Oz (and there have been quite a few) because they wanted to play SOO !

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I was born and bred in Sydney but always supported QLD in State of Origin. Why?Because I was a Bears supporter and a lot of their team were QLDers. There were more Bears playing for QLD than NSW hence why I followed them.North Sydney was well known as having a team of QLD scouts. So although playing in Sydney they had been born and initially played in QLD.
Although the Bears were often referred to as the easybeats they often had 3 or 4 Maroons and still the QLDers would win.More a fact of a champion team up against a team of champions.

Don't forget one of the more important Blues players,Peter Sterling was born in QLD.

But he played first Rugby league in NSW. He would, have been a great addition to Qld SoO.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Might have to review specific circumstances. As a general rule the north east island of Australia would feed into QLD and the South East island into NSW.

Let's not forget the kiwis who end up,playing for Oz (and there have been quite a few) because they wanted to play SOO !

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Well apparently eye gouging is now a sanctioned part of the All Black game plan. Dirty players since Richard Lowe, and still at it.

Deliberate grab the eye area of another player while looking at them and you get off.
All Blacks player Owen Franks cleared of alleged eye-gouge of Kane Douglas

But if you ‘recklessly making contact with the eye or eye area of an opponent’ who you can't see at the bottom of a ruck then it's an 8 week ban.

What's the difference - one of them wasn't an All Black.

medhead I'm actually surprised that it at least didn't get another look from the judiciary.

Rather disappointing that the Wallabies game plan didn't include playing rugby. Just cheap shots to try and unsettle the ABs.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Humiliating straight sets exit for Hawthorn against the Bulldogs.

New advert campaign for afl.... Best player in league, just don't expect to see him live!

Is the traditional Grand Final Dinner taking a break this year?

Usual offenders CE and cove are overseas and interstate

Is Portsea overseas? ... oh it is Saturday week?

I am interested ... maybe discuss more in a few days .

Yes, a small football match on 1 October 2016.

I was unsuccessful in the reserved seat ballot so if I attend the game it will be on a walk up basis. (MCC runs a ballot and allocates a few thousand seats in advance, the remainder is all available as walk up seating on the day.)

The Royce / Olive Tree combo has been great in the past, so I am "interested" if we can get numbers.

Mrscove has us in Sydney instead of at the grand final.
seeing Western Bulldogs playing well was a real treat last weekend. I just hope the Dockers get better next season.
