Heads up about program changes

Well that's a shame. Seems how the $9,000 family trip to Europe that was available last week is only available as a $13,000 Flex option today (which I was tempted to pay if the upgrade cost was the lower points) I will now look at other airlines. The VA (SQ metal) option is still $9k, or $13k with the long legs in W and mixture of VA/EY metal.

Well quite. All part of the 'Simpler and fairer' mantra that QF employs. No doubt the dimwits that cooked up the new earn tables are presently working on the upgrades table!!

Maybe after they have finished that, they can get back to fixing the new points earn calculator that still doesn't recognise MEL-LHR as a legitimate flight (you know QF9, the flight they have just re-timed and emailed everyone about!??!)

Quite possibly, but then why have a "New earning points calculator" that they link to? Why not just get rid of it if they aren't going to fix it? Oh that's right, it is simpler to just leave the faulty calculator on display than fix the website!

One wonders why QF make it easy to earn status from cheap airfares when other airlines don't.

:p

Easy? Not as easy as earning Platinum status in 2 days BNE-KTA return Any seat award for a few measly points and some loose change.

But I think post July I will still be able to labour my way to Platinum status on cheap red e-deals.

And I will raise your concerns if I get invited to next loyalty lunch.

shhhhh those peeps at QF may be reading this and remove this opportunity to rort the system.

pfft we don't want everyone to know about it!!

:p

But not suitable for those who purchase cheapest airfares. I would have difficulty earning status on AA and I am not sure the extra money I need to spend on eligible airfares is going to justify the savings in taxes.

....

Premium flights on Oneworld carriers don't credit so well to AA either.
Not in First class, but certainly in Flexi/premium economy.

A PE ticket on Qantas from MEL to HKG return for $1475 (in B/ & T classes) will earn enough EQP to achieve a Platinum Challenge. The PAX also earns ~16000 AAdvantage redeemable miles.

Pay your money take your choices/chances.

As mentioned the PEY (or Y/B economy) on any OneWorld carrier is a sweet deal if credited to AA. If the W cabin is not flash enough, try the J cabin fares TransPacific from CMB or TPE. Even so AA EXP still requires placing butt in seat for a long while.

OTOH one place where they don't credit well to AA is the new million miler program. But then I'm old enough I've received all I will ever get in that program.

Happy wandering

Regarding the earning. The FAQ does say booked and ticketed. However, I strongly feel the best option would be to just see what happens as earning seems to only be determined by the booking date in other similar situation. Yes this is a risky approach.

There's just to much ambiguity for me. I was booked and originally ticketed last year. A number of ticket reissues have occurred since due to date changes (one due to an involuntary re-route). Each time a new ticket number has been generated but the booking reference has remained the same.

I think it's too risky in my circumstance, particularly due to the whole month (or longer) it would take them to correct eligible flights. If it was the usual one or two days I could test the water with one flight. But over the course of a month I will have had several flights that could be attributed to another program (one that understands its part of an alliance).

on the other side of the coin, Points are given out like confetti nowdays, i accrue points without any change in my habits/spend that I can realistically easily spend.

My preferred option is still to spend them on upgrades, great value and fuel fine free.

I completely understand your risk mitigation strategy and the reasons for doing it. Perhaps I should have added "just saying" to my previous. ;)

Personally I applaud QF for this. Except for a few internal Oz flights paid by work, all my other flights are out of my own pocket.

Cheap QF flight price comparison (when when the specials are on) - check

Get my points and SCs and lounge access - check

Use JQ over VA and package in SC on Bali flights - check

Lose points and SC's if taken off cheap flights? - uncheck and use another airline!!

Not too worried. I am going to be fine for a while longer.

Some people though clearly aren't going to be OK and are taking their business to greener pastures elsewhere.

And as a QF Platinum one would earn the same amount on a deep discount Qantas ticket paying almost half the airfare.

AA might be OK for international travel but I still haven't seen anyone get around the 'E' class airfares on domestic routes. Huge difference between $85 sale airfare and $146 non sale airfare. Cannot possibly justify to spend that much for an earning airfare. Although I am not sure if the sale airfare goes through the various stages before hitting $146.

It is hard to see how this is at all true, especially considering the fairer and simpler QFF earning.
