How will Ukraine Situation affect travel

I think you completely missed my post.

But yes, I agree with your post. Possibly you only read the first sentence of mine.
I saw it, and sadely I don't think it'll be over by October. But it won't be dominating our newscycle so for those of us not in Ukraine it'll forgotten with the next big disaster in front of mind.

Case in point, how much time did you dedicate to thinking about Afghanistan in the last 20 years outside of the occasional news article?

So again, unless your planning to travel to either Russia or the Ukraine I doubt this will have much affect on travel.

Suggest you read the last sentence of my post where I said exactly this.

A fair bit actually, I’m an Afghanistan veteran.

Qantas will stop sending its London flights through Russian airspace following similar moves by other carriers amid the worsening conflict in Ukraine.

As recently as Saturday, Qantas confirmed it was maintaining a flight path over northern Russia, more than 800km from the border with Ukraine.

Airlines that operate through the airspace of foreign countries pay a fee to do so and Qantas confirmed it was paying Russia to operate in its airspace.
Qantas’s Darwin-London flights will now fly through the Middle East and southern Europe to the south of Ukraine instead, adding about an hour to the flight time.

“Given the current circumstances and complexities, we’re opting to use one of our alternative flight paths that doesn’t overfly Russia while we continue to monitor this evolving situation,” a Qantas spokesman said.

“We regularly review our flight paths and make any *adjustments we consider prudent.”

The first flight to operate on the alternative route is flight QF2 from London to Darwin, which is due to takeoff on Sunday just before 9pm AEDT.

Looks like there is a story on the Australian saying QF is diverting away from Russian airspace. Don't have a subscription though.
This is from Reuters:

...Qantas Airways is opting to use an alternative flight path between Darwin and London that avoids Russian airspace after the invasion of Ukraine, the airline said on Sunday.

Flights operated over northern Russia will be routed over the Middle East and southern Europe instead, increasing flight times by about an hour.

This Urinates me off! Qantas should have stopped supporting and funding Russia a week ago!

As to the prospects of war this scares me.
I have studied the last 500 years of economic history and I have looked at the last 1,000 years and what I have seen over and over again is that when there’s a rising power challenging an existing one then there is going to be a conflict…

That has happened 16 times in the last 500 years and out of 12 of those times there has been war’.

I guess we wait for EU announcement (I think there is a Foreign Ministers meeting today EU time) and see what Turkey decides separate to that.

Things looking messy for Russian aviation:

Not too many EU countries left - France and Spain being the main ones of note.

I don’t believe Ireland has? Happy to be corrected.

Of course bans don’t apply to Oceanic airspace, so whilst Ireland controls a lot of airspace, most of it is Oceanic so it’s ban has little value.

Edit - they’ve just announced it. Add them to the list.

There were a number of F- registered aircraft coming in over northern Russia they probably delayed until clear of Russian airspace.
Do we know how many bans (airspace closures to Russian aircraft) are actually in force, as opposed to officially announced or otherwise?

Not sure if there’s a consolidated list but things are getting messy operationally for the Russians…

Safe to say they’ll probably cancel everything to the EU shortly of their own accord.

I just hope they don’t let the Bermuda registered aircraft get through the net.
