Re: HSBC QF Platinum - 20K points (+2 QP passes) - $199 Annual Fee [extended] to 30/0
Applied for mine in October/November last year, after watching the add for a while. They seem to keep extending the "deadline" or "limited offer" of 20k points but it has been 20k for probably a year or more AFAIK.
Got approved for $10k limit which is plenty for us within a day or so, a week after being knocked back for a $6k Woolies (backed by HSBC) card. The 20k bonus points posted when my second statement was due (2 months and a bit from memory), at the same time as earned points.
The only glitch was the card got blocked within a few days, as I made some online purchases which were transacted overseas and flagged as suspicious. The purchases were made from Agoda.com (accommodation), but earlier that same day I made some other larger purchases as well (flights) online but they went though ok since they were Aussie.
I'm told the included travel insurance is one of the better ones, (the $199 fee being less than I currently pay for travel insurance over the course of a year, and also includes the good lady as well as Junior so long as their flights are paid with the card) and the qp access cards arrived within a few weeks of my first transaction, and are fully transferable (they go for $40-60 on ebay, or did when I looked). Taking the good lady on Valentines Day.
My only current concern is when we go overseas. I phoned our banks yesterday to let them know we'll be withdrawing money and may use the HSBC Visa for the odd purchase, and while the other banks (CBA, ING) were fine about it, and have worked previously with no glitch, the HSBC Philippines call centre stated that they may phone me to confirm the transaction. When I told them I wouldn't have my phone they said they'd email me, as some foreign merchants process Visa cards in a different way to Aus, which may cause the card to block - if I reply to the email it will be unblocked... Hardly convenient while waiting in store to complete a transaction.
Will report back here how the foreign transactions go - I often buy high end camera lenses when I travel, as they are a lot cheaper than here. Lucky the shop I usually go to in Bangkok know me, and hopefully will understand if the card gets declined should I decide to use it instead of cash.
The call centre has had some negative reviews online, which I read about before getting the card. When I spoke to them yesterday however, the girl I spoke to did try to be as helpful as she could, but was hard to understand her accent, and she spoke quite quickly. Answered the phone reasonably quick though - actually almost straight away after I entered my details on the keypad.
Hope this helps.
