That I needed to have rung PP to have used the cert, that I couldn't front up and then tried to use it.

Experts, Is it Plats that's important or Ambassador membership? Mine is up for renewal, as I got the points for plats but not enough to comp AMB, lost Royal a year or so ago as well.

They want $100usd. Reasonable?

Did an two-night in Boston for 20000 points that helped.

Ambassador only works at IC hotels, whereas the PLat benefits work everywhere else when they are applied, which is inconsistent. If you can make the use of the BOGO then the Ambassador program is worth it.

Technically you are supposed to book via the PP portal or by calling to ensure that the correct rate is loaded into your booking (and to also lock out other IATA type numbers from your booking that will earn others commission on the booking).

How did it go in the end?

Mal, technically hat is exactly what the Guest Services Manager (who checked me out) also advised me.

All went well, was happy to keep the loaded rate as it was commissionable to a TA I know (they were happy, no work for some commission) ;).

Was able to make use of the PP non-transferable 2-for-1 breakfast voucher and $50 credit for expenses voucher (wi-fi access and a beer that night; an energy bar and juice for consumption during my meetings the next day as I had 3 back-to-back). They saved me another $80 in expenses, so it just may be that I lose the 25% voucher (as my PP year finishes 15 Feb and no travel planned by then).

Was very happy with the CP, would consider staying there again either for business or (long) weekend with the family. The double bedded room would fit the 4 of us (with cot).

Hotel: Holiday Inn Darling Harbour

Booked standard room on best flexible rate, ended up in a corner suite (which really isn't that exciting, but at least they tried!). They seem to be giving me a decent sized bottle of water each day too.

Stayed here the week after this stay too, on an identical booking, and this time ended up in a double king (nicer than the suite), with daily bottles of water and free Internet.

I don't quite understand. Complained about what? The wrong letter? Or that you didn't get an upgrade?

I see Platinum benefits across the PC chain in Australia especially as quite spotty. Well, they will give you an upgrade but usually it's either the next room type (e.g. a Standard to a Deluxe, rather than a more substantial but non-suite upgrade) or a higher floor / corner room (especially true for HI). Sometimes they'll throw the "subject to availability" clause back at you, and if you're on a points (non-qualifying) stay then getting something for your status is considered lucky, not standard.

As free internet is not a published benefit anywhere for members, do people feel at all guilty for asking for it as a Platinum, and if you don't then how do you go about it (i.e. what exactly do you say to them)?

For context, please see this thread:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....e-platinum-will-reflected-existing-27283.html

At check in I "complained" by pleasantly mentioning I was Platinum but their data showed me as Gold. I was then offered complimentary internet as a form of service recovery.

It's this inconsistency that makes HHonors my preferred program over PC - status benefits are defined. (breakfast for Gold/Diamond - Guaranteed! Lounge access for Diamond - Guaranteed [where they exist/are open])

The thing with many HI's (and CP's to an extent), is that in many cases there really isn't anything that is a 'more substantial but non-suite upgrade'. So that is why you get the whole corner room (often a bit bigger, and sometimes oddly shaped), higher floors and so on.

PC status benefits are defined. The problem is, that compared to other programs they aren't really substantial. But then, that probably goes with the fact that platinum in PC is relatively easy to acquire.

That's another thing about HHonors - staying on an award still entitles one to the benifits of status.

Yes, they were giving it to new members late last year I recall.

(FWIW, I attained PC Platinum last year with 5 paid stays + promotions. I will attain Platinum this year with another 5 paid stays.)

The best benefit of PC plat is the 50% bonus points.

Of course, the major caveat is the HHonors status can be an expensive attainment if tied to stays in south-east Asia.
