Not possible, its likely if it was geostationary it was the same satellite all the time, and it would not log signal strength or RSS on every message.

I'm not sure how to reconcile "not possible" with "if it was". Seems to me if it wasn't then it is possible, even if unlikely. Do you have information that allows you to definitely rule out the possibility?

ACARS only got access to Iridium after 2007, before that aircraft are likely to have Acars equipment that talks to Immarsat only, as per the footprint map, thats a not possible. As already posted, plotting a range radius will bring in a smaller result in that scenario. Considering MH dont stream ACARS, there was no need to upgrade the ACARS by retrofitting a satcom unit that will talk to orbiting satellites.

Is it possible to triangulate using 3 or more different data sources? i.e. Making a composite triangulation using say the sat location, and 2 radio sources

Its possible to triangulate any transmission if its received by more than one station, if its a ground based reception. However trying to use it in this case is literally a needle in the haystack scenario. The more important question is how can that ACARs data get out but no SSR, coughpit originated ACARs or any other type of comms?

If you remember the plane crash of the Dragon near Gympie in Oct 2012, thats actually how they located the wreckage two days later, using one of the passengers mobile phone.

Not sure if anyone has seen this yet: Malaysia Airlines plane Flight MH370 missing: New hostage theory | News.com.au

"US investigators are pursuing the possibility that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and its 239 passengers and crew are being held against their will at an unknown location."

They have no idea do they?

That said I did flirt the idea with a friend that this could have happened a few days ago. As bad as it is, this would probably be one of the best plausible scenarios because at least this could mean the passengers and crew are still alive.

The thought crossed my mind as well, but surely there would have been some indication of the plane on some radar somewhere. Unless, that is, they managed to fly to wherever they were going through radar blind spots. I guess it could have been picked up but the penny hasn't dropped yet.

I feel so sorry for the friends and relatives - they must be on an incredible roller coaster of hope and despair. It seems so unlikely after all this time that the latest theory of a hostage situation can possibly be true - surely there would be details by now or demands made. I can remember all the hostage situations from the 70s and it all happened immediately. How could the plane be flown somewhere, landed and just disappear? We are not exactly talking about a light aircraft.

When you hijack a plane you normally ask for a ransom; its not likely that you could just on-sell a 777 without knowing more about it.

Corporate espionage? Maybe they're demanding something from the engineering company that had all those staff on board and the company is keeping quiet?

Guy at work is convinced they are in North Korea.

Theory 101.
It seems there have been 2 confirmed sightings, 1 heard explosion, 1 known radar position and 1 possible radar position (I'm ignoring this for now)

1. Last known radar position: http://wpbloom.com/wpbloom-bin/image_preview.cgi?id=201403112051LATWP___WP_PIX___PLANE-MYSTERY111
2. Confirmed sighting off Vung Tau: Letter that was received by Vietnamese officials about a poss... on Twitpic
3. Confirmed sighting off Kota Bharu: Missing MH370: Cops get reports on low-flying aircraft and loud noise - Nation | The Star Online
4. Explosion heard off Kuala Terregganu: MISSING MH370: Terengganu police receive report on explosion in Marang - Latest - New Straits Times

Let's say that after the last known radar position, the aircraft faced a calamity and fell to low altitude, on fire, (but did not crash) and was sighted by the oil rig worker.
Then without any electrical navigation. a pilot (or someone) turned the aircraft around westward until they hit the coast at Kota Bharu.
Then they were on more familiar territory, they followed the coastline south but crashed at Kuala Terregganu where the villagers heard the explosion/crash. This appears outside of the current expanded search area; very much closer to home.

That's drawing a bit of a long bow. The senior ranks would definitely be expected to speak Malay and English; not so Chinese I would think.

Not such a long bow and it does say a lot about the country.

Twenty-three percent of Malaysians are Chinese and not one of them is in the top rank of public servants?

A jobs for the boys type of club? Pardon the pun.

My experience with Malaysia is that nearly all govt positions, and I'd bet ALL military positions, are occupied by Malays. Outside of private enterprise the only place I've dealt with people of Chinese origin is academia and not many of them. I don't want to delve into race relations here but there appear to be lines drawn.
