Ah fair enough. I hadn't thought that the bar might also incorporate mod functions.

I note that on mobile the voting buttons are always visible, whereas on my desktop they are hidden until mouse over.

They are quite feint on mobile aren't they. I'm wondering as others have commented it's almost like the contrast needs to be jacked up.

I think we may be in the minority on that point, but even though I'm biased, I have found myself more engaged on my mobile and haven't had to run to a computer nearly as many times as I had to previously, today.

It would be good to get PrincessFiona's impression as I know she had awful issues with the latest app update whereas I still had access to the old one.

I'm not sure where she is, but I'll alert her to this post with a tag for the future... @Princess Fiona
Haha!!
There's a lot of white !!!
But I have posted more often in the last 36 hours than I have in the last 6 weeks I think. So for me it is a huge improvement.

I'd like to add my thanks to the team for a wonderfully executed transition! IMO the new site is an overall evolution and can only get better...

Is that '@' thing a plot to forced me into twitter-speak?

[old codger mode] I-will-resist ! [/old codger mode]

Add me to that list. I wasn't going to ask as it shows my age! But I'll do it now. What does the @ do in this forum? Clearly it flushed out the Princess!

I'm not the first to show you this, but if you have participated then your avatar appears inset the thread starters avatar.
Only if you post to a thread with the new version.

The old 'New Posts' was a busy screen with lots of information. I could go to sub-forums from there and return back to 'New Posts'.

If you type the "@" symbol immediately followed by a username (and the username can have spaces and special characters in it) the software should provide a list of user suggestions, you then click on the right one and continue typing your reply. You can also use the BBCode "User" but you need to know the member number.

So how do I increase the number of posts per page? I used to have 40 per page, now it looks like there are 20 per page.

I have looked into this and there is no user setting for this due to the way Xenforo handles links to individual posts. That said, there are add-ons that enable it but these would require testing before we could go live. So for the moment, you (and I) will have to stick to 20 posts per page.

The site is telling me I can upgrade to gold membership ..... I'm already gold. Has the membership status rolled over correctly?

I just had a look at this, it seems there's not an easy way of setting it to recognise what you have, so you are not offered it again, however if you are not seeing ads then you can assume you've got some level premium membership.

You could also check out the Gold Membership Privileges subforum.

Looks like XenForo doesn't do tables natively. Some plugins available.
Table BBCode with Xenforo

Yes, we use CTA Table BB Code, however this only provides half of the solution. The bigger issue is that the editor does not handles tables in WYSIWYG mode. Solutions to this are being sought, but for now you'll just have to make do without.

As an aside, the tables in the wiki have been working previously, but when we went live they decided to not play ball. I am investigating and hope to have them rendering soon.

The open to edit signatures doesn't exist where the guide says it does (under 'personal details' and before 'contact details' when hovering over the icon at the top).

Based on the other links I tried to guess the 'signature' link as https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/account/signature, which produces this error: "You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action."

I'm an AFF Gold member, so I don't think the issue is because of membership tier.

There was a slight issue with this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though, if you check now it should be fixed. Please let me know.

There are a lot here that don't like change!

Aside from not being able to strip out the avatars and the user info, I think the site is looking good. Will check it out on the PC tomorrow. It is a more modern look and after you've played for a short time, it is easy to use. To be honest - I couldn't tell you now what the old one looked like!

Contrast could definitely be improved. I'm not sure why the forum designers thought making functions quite feint (using the light accent colour) was a good idea, i.e. Quote, Reply, Report and the voting functions. It might have been better to use the space to make a large icon in a contrasting colour than what is there now.

Actually, @RooFlyer, the idea of @ has been around for a while. :) If you ever used mIRC back in the days, @ was used to denote another member in the channel (other symbols included /me [status] which was a command to print something you intended to display as you doing something rather than you saying something). I never used a BBS in my life, but I wonder if they had a similar convention.

EDIT: and pretty cool, the @ member idea works directly in non-WYSIWYG mode as well. :)

It's not but your home GPS coordinates are.

This is a major concern! Posting photos from your phone needs to be made secure and private.....think about all those wine photos!!!

I hope the team is prioritising this one!!!

Except, you haven't used one word.

I understand you think we have taken a step backwards and the design does not fit with what you would like. However, we will not be going back to the previous website at this period.

While I think that's got some merit, even organising the list right now would be a distraction to me :p

As for the last point you made about the report/quote/reply bar... on your screen you see 4 buttons, but on mine I see many more, as I have extra actions that I can perform on posts. I don't think the add-on for post ratings allows them to be integrated into this bar, but had it, it would have created problems for me in viewing the site.

Regarding the white space issue, if anyone has an old screenshot of AFF in the vBulletin days you will notice that it previously had a more inefficient misuse of space.

Previously, your user information was to the left and post to the right, as with now. However your signature would not start until all the information in the left section was finished displaying, often causing a huge waste between a one-line post and a signature if the member also had a lot of user information, some QF/VA Verified Status showing and had used the Flight Tracker.

Flash forward to the new design and not only does a signature start immediately after a post, sometimes ending up adjacent to the number of posts made on the left is a user profile, but we also have removed a lot of the user information that used to display on the left, such as the Verified Status and extra details from the Flight Tracker.

I'm not singling you out @JohnM but the fact remains, there is actually less whitespace in forum posts than there was before.

When I read something like this my urge is to quip back with something sarcastic. This is from my bad wit. The thing is though, it's not constructive, and neither is posting more or less the same message over and over again in this thread about how much you don't like the design. I understand you don't, but we will not be reversing course.

A lot has changed, and a lot has been improved. Now whether it looks good is of course subjective, but elements have been carefully considered and the layout chosen to take AFF into the future while also not being too big a step from the past. This is why the forum structure has not changed. The previous vBulletin "skin" was not heavily adapted from the default look, but this has been, to create a flow from the front page (www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au) to the community forums. You will find a similar colour scheme.

That's true, an app generally drives engagement. However here's my counter, due to the state the app has been in lately, it has probably kept people away. The new site works so well on a mobile web browser compared to that app that it may provide a boost to traffic. Further, free members would previously have had no choice but to use the very intuitive mobile skin of vBulletin to browse and this may have turned them off visiting and posting, but with this new responsive design, they may be encouraged to become more engaged. Obviously, the numbers speak louder than words and it has only been about 36 hours, but it would be something I look at soon!

That is an interesting theory. For now the official word is that an app will be coming soon, however you are partially right that it is further down the "to do" list.

Having used it now for a few days, I am loving BOTH the new design and the functionality of the mobile website.

Just so you don't think the whole thread is complaints, I think the update has been a massive step forward and have found myself visiting the site way more than I did with the clunky old app.

Keep up the good work

I've been using Xenforo for some time on another forum (one of the main developers, who also worked on vB, is an admin at another forum I use and he has used that forum as a Xenforo testing ground). It can get a bit confusing at times.
eg, clicking on a thread link will take you to the first new post since the last time you looked at that thread. If there have been no new posts since the last time you looked at the thread, it takes you to the last post. On the other hand, if it's been some time since the thread was active, or you last looked, the same link takes you to the first post and you'd need to use the new post button at the top of the thread next to the page numbers to get to the unread posts.

Would it be possible to activate the template option so we can select other forum templates to use?
Perhaps some threads would benefit from thread marks?
A divider between sticky threads and normal threads would be helpful. :)

OK in my attempt to become the non-headless forum member, I have uploaded my jpg file in reduced size (down to 52x96 pixels) and it still apparently removes the head. Suggestions?

Without wandering?

Fred
I quite like the concept of a headless wanderer! :)
