Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Thanks for that.

Am I right in believing that Len Evans invented this 'game'?

When someone can tell me, in addition to which side of the hill, the name of the winemaker's mistress, I'll be convinced that they know what they are talking about :p:mrgreen:.

It is so rumoured but I suspect their would have been many casual options games played over the years. Our group was founded in 1980. I joined in roughly 1990.

Winestate magazine used to do an interstate comp. The Qld event was held at the Travelodge each year. Some professional colleagues formed a tasting team called the Deft Palates, which was apt but pissed me off because I wasn't included! They won and got a free trip to Adelaide for the interstate finals, which also included NZ teams.

As revenge, the following year, I formed a team called the Sedimental Blokes, winning our comp in a very tense "taste-off" against another team. Gotta know that white pepper nose in a cool climate Mt Langi shiraz;). Our final was in Melbourne. We beat the only other (sponsored) Qld team called Scud's Missiles. Their name was topical at the time due to the Iraq war. Their team captain is now an MW! You might be able to crack his identity if you think about his team name:lol:. In this comp there were 8 wines, and not necessarily from Australia or NZ. I recall an Alsace Riesling, Oregon Pinot and French burgundy!

The aim though is not to make it impossibly difficult but to ascertain what people know. If the pinot didn't seem like an Aussie one, was it a savoury French style. If not, then most likely the Oregon option etc. Guesses, but educated ones. Try it with a friend. It's a great way to train your palate, without the marketing BS influencing your thought processes.

I found this Bordeaux lurking in the wine fridge last night to go with the eye fillet.
There was not much nose so I poured it into a decanter hoping for a bit more bouquet. Alas it was not to be, also quite light on the pallet and soft but smooth tannins.
An acceptable but average wine.

With water restrictions announced overnight in California there will be far lower wine production from there in the next couple of years.
I am still impressed with Cullen's and Mosswood reds and I can pass on Picardy.
What do you think of the Mosswood Pinot Noir. Frankly I was pleasantly surprised.

Could be bad for many more years if this already long-lasting drought doesn't break.

I had a Picardy Shiraz a couple of weeks back when I was at Pemberton and it was very good, but I'm not blown away by their wines generally.

I don't recall ever trying a Moss Wood Pinot Noir but it got a good rap upthread in Daver6's tasting. Must give it a try.

It's an impeccably made wine with great oak and tannin management. The style is at the fruitier cherry/plum end of the spectrum rather than the savoury/spice/forest floor end. A great wine but for $60 I'd what something more special. I am however a fan of their Semillon and Cab Sauv.

Hey drron. Just heard Era has closed it's doors yesterday due to $ (blaming G20 disruptions). Pinot tasting 14/04 will be at another, as yet, undisclosed venue. Friend going to another event scheduled for Tuesday after Easter is now going to Enoteca. Will give Shaw Smith a tingle tomorrow. Was only there on Saturday evening post conference at the Convention Centre! Sassy jazz trio and all. Our wine tasting group had it booked out for our Annual Dinner in July. Got to find a new venue for 70 odd BYO Friday night pronto....aaaahh:!:

Sedimental. we're going to the 14th event - can you post where it'll now be held please

Wine tasting Tuesday night (2nd bracket). Recovered photos:)

All good wines. Thankfully the cork in the Centenary Hill stood the test of time. It still had good fruit and acid driving it along. Memorable.
