Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Nice wines - Harry's Monster in particular is a favourite.

Hope you got the recipe of their moscato granita for Cmas!

As some know this is a wine that I have a sentimental attachment to.And it is also drinking well-

I'm sure the wine was fabulous, but according to Langton's Vintage Ratings, 2003 was only rated a 7 for MR Cabernet. 2004 was a 10, 05 (8), 06 (6), 07, 08, 09, 10, 13 (all 10), while 11, 12 and 13 were each rated 9.

I have just one '04 left :(. Frankly, Leston is always pretty darn good (except for the terrible 2006 season which was very cool and bad for all reds in MR. A lot of red grapes were not even picked that year.)

Indeed, although 2003 wasn't universally fabulous, this wine was testament that a good winemaker can still make an excellent wine in an "average" year.

If I could go back, I would have bought a few more bottles.

IIRC that is the wine that nearly wasn't.
Apparently the block where those vines were growing was meant to be cleared. Secretly it wasn't and a wine was produced.
As the saying goes the rest is history.

I went to a champagne dinner at Lamont's Cottesloe hosted by Tyson Stelzer on Sunday night. There were actually a couple of changes to the listed wines. The 2004 Pol Roger blanc de blanc was in fact the 2002.

Relly fun night and Tyson was a great guy. Wines of the night for me were the La Grande Dame and 2000 Krug.

Looks awesome! Very jealous... I think I am related to Tyson... not closely enough to get the invites/ champagne tastings though.. probably better for business that way ;) :)

Absolutely agree that a good winemaker makes a difference. While 2011 was not so good (7) for Clare rieslings, I have some Tim Knappsteins that are proving very drinkable.

This went down well with a Rogan Josh on Sunday night.. still a young wine but smooth, silky and luscious…Will try another bottle in 12 months (if I can wait that long) to see how they have settled. Hoping to put the rest down for about five years if I can keep my hands off them..

Recently picked up a box of the 2011 and can’t wait to compare vintages…all in good time of course..

I look forward to the Princess Fiona tour of the Hunter which will feature a Tyrrell's visit hopefully.

They can last a long time.I drank my last 1974 vat 9 last year. Was still fine.I used to buy 3 dozen mixed vat numbers each year when I lived in the Hunter.
As for winemakers they can be very modest. For the last 3 years I spent in the hunter my job for the wine club was to select the "mystery"wine. My last year was 1992.One of the dinners was at the Lindeman's winery in Pokolbin.1984 was a poor year.I took along their 1984 Steven Hermitage which I had bought a dozen of.Was drinking very well and no one even thought it was a Hunter wine-including the winemaker. When taken out of the brown paper bag the winemaker,Patrick Auld remarked-"just goes to show you that I am a better winemaker than even I thought."

Great corks!! Don't know much about Italian wines...so interested in your experiences Daver6

Firstly, I note that is post 9999 from you QF WP :)

In general, Barolos are unapproachable when young. The grape is Nebbiolo. Hugely tannic and acidic and really need some cellar time. Also, really are food wines. Typical aromas are tar, roses and dark fruits. Notes to come in a bit for the wines I had last night.

Was debating which thread in which to post my 10,000th - note that by posting in Playground, my post count doesn't change :D.

I wonder if I should open a bottle (tonight) to celebrate this momentous feat ;). Why not :D
