Hi Muppet
I am but a beginner at this and am prepared to be proved wrong

I would do this:

snaffle up the Syd-Lax flight

worry about the Canberra to Sydney later

I doubt you'll find a better Syd-Lax F deal.

I'd WALK CBR-SYD for that difference :p.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

SYD-DXB doesn't appear to be cheap as a JASA for some reason. There is Classic Award availability, but not a cheap JASA. Likewise from almost any Australian city.

Have clocked up 100K points in my account. Time to go looking for a cheap JASA BNE/PER (via SYD, MEL or ADL of course) for my end of month trip.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

I was under the impression that the cheap xASAs - the ones we're all interested in - booked into the classic award fare buckets which are treated as "fully flexible" - i.e. no change/cancellation/etc fees. Based on your post and serfty's post perhaps I have this wrong, however - I can only personally verify no change / cancellation fees on domestic xASAs, not international xASAs. Apologies if I lead anyone astray.

I'd also add, for the benefit of Limewood and Jessica, that it's not uncommon for QFF CSRs to try to charge you a 5,000pt fee if you try to change/cancel a domestic xASAs which booked into a classic award fare bucket - if this happens, just insist there is no fee, ask them to double-check, and they'll discover that they're wrong.

Both the JASA's I've done have booked into "U" class the same bucket as used for Classics but the FB on the ticket is different which is what they look at when referring to fare rules.

Hi guys
I know this is a JASA thread but I have an FASA question.

When booking a classic F award into P, connections to the international gateway are included in U for no extra points.
Yet doing the same thing is impossible online with FASA.

ie. SYD-LAX = 144k points but CBR-SYD-LAX = 1,500,000 points?

If I call, can the call centre do it so that the cost is reflective of the classic award?

thanks
m

I've had this problem before when looking for PE seats BNE/DFW. When showing flights via SYD it only gave me the best points option for QF8 BNE/SYD connecting with QF7 SYD/DFW as no domestic flight numbers offer PE. What would be good is if the system could offer whY BNE/SYD for the same points on dom flights.

Same thing for CBR, as there is no "F" CBR/SYD would be good if they could offer "J" on that that sector connecting with "F" SYD/LAX for the same points as the "F" flight SYD/LAX. I would book the deal ex SYD then call up res & tell them you can't book the fare ex CBR & see if they can add in the CBR/SYD & reissue the ticket for the same price (points). Check on Expert Flyer to see there is "U" class though on the CBR/SYD flight before calling.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Got to love JASA's. Booking a PER/BNE for 28th Nov and found one at 49K points at the right time (sadly, have to do the direct flight :o ). When booking, decided to dial it down to 36K (with commensurate increase in payment to $152.92). Add to that DSC and 5K points earned, not a bad net cost at all. 160 SC's, making me 15 SC's short of re-qualifying Gold.

Got to love JASA's.

One can only fall in love when the number of points entering one's account allows them to be able to expend on ASAs. :(

Yes, one has been waiting 6 months between JASA's in order to accumulate sufficient. Now I have surplus to my immediate requirements after a large deposit yesterday.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Thanks to folks on this thread , just completed my first JASA albeit on a 737 classic and a half an hour circling Brissie!
I am not a regular traveller so didn't think it would be possible to ever sit closer than the rows backward of the wings:D

Could you let us know how you go with this? I have a similar issue for one potential FASA I am looking at booking.

I'll have to rename this comment the "How do I change a JASA booking".

A client in ADL has thrown me an interesting conundrum. He wants to see me and the win/win for me would be to cut my PER trip by 1 day and do PER/ADL/BNE. It means a 6.50am PER/ADL flight (QF590) and QF656 ADL/BNE at 7.45pm (both of which are showing U availability). Timing is perfect for me and gets me more DSC's :D (which will now re-qual me Gold rather than leaving me short).

Now how is it best to change my existing booking (as I've never had to do it before)? Do I cancel and have points + $$ refunded, or can I change existing booking (is via phone the only way with an award booking ?). I have 63K points in my account and I need 84,308 points to secure PER/ADL and ADL/PER sectors (without dialling up at all). But if the dial up is too much (looks like being $188.87 which is acceptable), I'll have to wait for the 36K points to come back. Help?? I'd rather know my options before I ring QF in case I get a clueless CSA at the other end of the phone.

From the looks of it, that exact flight pairing above doesn't show as an option, but I'm sure I can book the earlier ADL/BNE flight, then as soon as the booking is confirmed, change it (assuming U is still available on the later flight).

From the looks of the reloc, if I press "cancel", the $$ transform to a voucher. What is the time taken to refund the points? I doubt pressing "change" will give me the ability to make multi city booking.

For mine I would ring QFF and see if they can change. It may only cost 5,000 points or perhaps nothing if the ticket is of a class that can be changed.

nothing to lose ?

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

On the phone now discussing the options with a most officious CSA. She can't change the number of points, so any fare difference must be in $. Therefore the additional value is $277 (rather than me being able to use an additional ~48K points).

Considering leaving the existing booking and pushing out the date - this would give me my return flight from Ozfest. Then simply book the new flights and when they are confirmed, make the date change for the second sector (ADL/BNE) to my preferred flight number. This will leave me with no points in my account - for the 3rd time in its history :o.

Back to earning them again.

P.S. Decided on the latter - new booking cost $80.49 and 60K points. Found that using Multi City, I could select the exact flight ADL/BNE and it priced it by rounding to 60K and auto calculating the additional $. Very happy with that outcome as it's 140 SC's (doubled to 280 SC's) and I get 5K in points back. Now to wait for my existing booking to re-appear. The reloc isn't working but the CSA sent me an unchanged itin??

Hey, completely noob so thanks for all the tips in this thread.

I'm trying this ASA thing for a few standard return international trips, and even for economy it's coming up with approx 200K points and then a $2K credit card fee on top. Is this normal? That just seems about the same as it would through the normal points plus pay scheme.

Thanks,

Ryan.

This is now "How Qantas should not think tha you booked a Classis Award". I just checked my points balance, wondering why I still had 27K points instead of 3K.

Whilst the booking says
Points & Credit Card = 60,000 + $80.49 AUD
my QFF account says

Not Happy QF . Rang QF Res to find that notes on the file said "points refunded due to mis-quote". Needless to say, I informed the very patient Jill that it wasn't a mis-quote, it was an ASA. After some discussion with a Supervisor and FF team, they refunded all points to my account and $80.49 to my CC.

Now to hope that they had released the seat and/or still had the U seat availability. Of course it wasn't on the initial JASA re-book, but I got the first sector and have chosen the earlier ADL/BNE flight (now to go back into the new booking and change it online). Cost was now 60K points and $225.67 :( [maybe that was the reason or the re-quote - a difference in $$ required in the booking)

It all depends on what fare classes are available on that specific flight. So if there are classic award seats available, then the ASA points cost is lowest. If there are no classic award seats available then the ASA points cost is somewhat proportional to the $$$ value of the fares being sold for the flight. If the flight is close to selling out, then there are generally only high cost seats available and those will be offered as ASA awards at high points cost.

The cash/credit card co-payment is always high for QFF redemptions for flights that include Fuel Fines in the "taxes and surcharges". While QFF persists with their policy of adding fuel surcharges to award redemptions its likely that the co-payment will often be a significant proportion of the cost of an equivalent purchased fare.

Alright, so this is probably a really stupid question - but I'm no really sure what you mean by "classic rewards seats"?! I keep reading Y and J and U (and whatever else) fares/seats on here and I'm totally lost.

If there's an indicator on this site somewhere that explains all of this please point me towards it!

Classic Awards are those that available for the fixed number of FF points based on the distance traveled. Any Seat Awards allow FF members to use points instead of purchasing a fare with real money. Classic Awards book into fare classes X (Economy), Z (Premium Economy), U (Business Class) and P (First Class). ASA can book into any valid fare class for the cabin being booked. So an ASA that books into X class is going to be the lowest cost, but can only be booked if there is X class availability on that particular flight. If there is no X class available, then the ASA could book into any valid and available economy fare class, so could be N, S, V, L, M, H, K, B , Y etc. Each of those booking/fare classes will sell for different $$$ amounts and hence will cost different numbers of FF points if booked as Any Seat Awards. A B or Y fare will likely be very expensive to purchase with $$$ and hence will be similarly expensive if using FF points.

Once the e-ticket was emailed to me, got back on the phone (after first checking Expert flyer for U availability - sure enough U4 was showing on QF656) and Ben was able to swap me over and waived the normal 3,500 assisted booking fee as I was in Business.

Back to where I should have been initially. Now to select seats.
