re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

Classic Awards are those that available for the fixed number of FF points based on the distance traveled. Any Seat Awards allow FF members to use points instead of purchasing a fare with real money. Classic Awards book into fare classes X (Economy), Z (Premium Economy), U (Business Class) and P (First Class). ASA can book into any valid fare class for the cabin being booked. So an ASA that books into X class is going to be the lowest cost, but can only be booked if there is X class availability on that particular flight. If there is no X class available, then the ASA could book into any valid and available economy fare class, so could be N, S, V, L, M, H, K, B , Y etc. Each of those booking/fare classes will sell for different $$$ amounts and hence will cost different numbers of FF points if booked as Any Seat Awards. A B or Y fare will likely be very expensive to purchase with $$$ and hence will be similarly expensive if using FF points.

Thanks NM, I really appreciate your help (and patience).

I'm a platinum flyer with half a million points and can't believe I don't know half this stuff! Rather embarassing really.

Your knowledge now should make your re-qualification (or P1 attainment) easier then ;).

Unfortunately, QF never give lessons on how best to utilise ones points to achieve status etc. What is great is the willingness of this community to share our experiences and knowledge. Then we all win

Spending the last hour (or 3) trawling through this thread has been incredibly enlightening!

Slightly off topic but my wife who is so NOT into all this came home today after a shop with these pronouncements: "yes I used the triple points voucher, and the 500 points for meat spend, I used my $5 off tell Coles voucher and I paid with the DJ Amex card" Takes a breath here then: " I didn't use my Woolworths card because I feel embarrassed using it at Coles. Oh and I got the 18c off petrol voucher"..

it even gets addictive for the "disinterested" spouses (the trick is to get them in the front of the plane a few times)

Is our life any better? I don't know. But it IS fun. And the front of the plane is fun too. :)

I have a disinterested spouse too but she tries... she just get mixed up which credit cards to use at which stores so I have written instructions on a post-it note attached to each card. e.g. DJ Amex (2.25/1) use at supermarkets and petrol; CBA Amex (1.5/1) use for all other Amex transactions; JQ MasterCard (1/1) for all other use.

Hi guys,

This is SUCH a brilliant site! Such a wealth of knowledge, it's incredible!

I'd love to pick your collective brain... I know that it often takes a bit of time and patience to find the best JASAs, but feel like I am going around in circles. I need 245 status credits by Jan 31st. I have a bit of time off in the next 2 weeks so can fly any day/time. Travel in January is going to be difficult for me, so ideally I'd like to go on a status run in the next fortnight (or Dec if necessary). I was looking at SYD>CBR>MEL>HBA return, but I believe that would only net me 240 status points.... ie, I'd be 5 short!!! Any suggestions??

Thanks!

There almost needs to be a thread on its own for ideas such as status runs for disinterested/nonplussed spouses.

A couple of things I've thought of are a status run camouflaged as a 'normal' part of holiday eg a KUPP run LAS/SJU then doing a short cruise around the Caribbean for 3/5/7 nights before flying back to LAS staying 1 night pre-cruise at the InterContinental SJU.

If SWMBO hates flying she could stay in LAS while you do the status run so you'd only be gone overnight.

Once they start to see the points post on their ff account the penny drops.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

I would be interested to know if the system would let you book a JASA SYD>CBR>MEL>HBA return

I could only get SYD-MEL-HBA - would love to know if it is possible, just in case I need lots of points in a hurry sometime...

Ooh, good question... not sure! I was looking at CBR>HBA (via MEL or SYD) and a separate JASA between SYD>CBR.

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

You can book it quite easily but it will be rarely good value and no different from a cost perspective to booking it separately, but will require minimum connection times which can be a significant issue. As far as ASAs go, there are some interesting changes as far as minimum points go, something is in the works, I like the idea of earning 5K of points after just spending 9k ;)

re: ( Now gone) "how do I book a J any seat award at classic award points level" thread.

I think that is the way you would have to do it, unless you went for a multi-city award, which would be silly as each leg is charged separately so seems to be more expensive than, say, SYD-MEL-HBA...

itchyfeet, I looked initially at SYD/HBA options but couldn't find any (but I'm not as much of an expert as markis10 and others). How many FF points do you have and what is maximum $ cost in addition?

I can find plenty of JASA SYD/MEL/PER/MEL/SYD flights from next Tues 20th (does require you flying the red-eye back from PER), for 104,662 all inclusive points (or min 72K points + $345.15). That's 240 SC's and 10,070 points credited (as a Gold).

Found a JASA SYD/BNE/TSV on Wed 21st for 37,818 (7.35am start out of SYD - arriving TSV at 10.50am), with an immediate turn arournd (11.30am to BNE, then a 2.25pm to SYD arriving 5pm) for same points value - so 75,636 all inclusive points (or min 48K points + $264.72). That's 200 SC's and 5,614 points credited (as a Gold).

Found a JASA SYD/BNE/DRW on Wed 21st for 54,231 (7.05am start out of SYD - arriving DRW at midday), with a return that day (3.15am direct back to SYD arriving 9.05m) for 50,663 - so 104,894 all inclusive points (or min 72K points + $347.07). That's 200 SC's and 9,650 points credited (as a Gold).

Just need the time and patience to check inbound and outbound on various dates...and look for the most convoluted routings at the cheapest prices.

at what point do you bother with these status run JASAs / give up?

i remember reading a thread of how people calculated their own value of what gold / platinum was worth but can't find it again on a quick skim. It was something like $100/ Flounge visit * x number of visits in a year for platinum, and something similar for gold. if someone could link it that would be excellent.

these tickets are a great way of finding the best value for your FF points, but sometimes reading these forums i get the impression people get blinkered in using FF points vs spending hard earned cash. e.g. purchasing a QC membership instead of chasing gold. horses for courses as they say!

Everyone's got a different value proposition on their points and cash. I suppose being on this forum, the average value profile you find here is rather biased. :)

Of course, to actually book JASAs (especially lots to get status) you need points in the first place. Some people reign that in easily through other flying (perhaps not enough for status), and/or others through credit card spend.

You got it on the nose. Keep in mind that QC is not cheap in and of itself, and you can only use it within the QF group. QF Gold gives you oneworld Sapphire, which means access to other oneworld Business level lounges. The latter is of course useful for those who intend to travel internationally. And of course, the extra 25% points loading on flying QF is something else to consider.

I'd say most people who status run are just short of a status level. Many wouldn't invest totally in points for their status, unless they were that awash with points anyway (in which case there's probably still something amiss, but whatever).

Hey there Itchyfeet, fancy a night in little old Adelaide?
You could do 3 JASA bookings
SYD-ADL (overnight in ADL)
ADL-TSV (via BNE)
TSV-SYD (via BNE)

Total 72000 points + $369 for 280 SCs

And this may be a long shot but if you happen to be WP you could do the SYD-ADL leg on QF81 (which leaves from the international terminal) and throw in a flounge visit while you are at it.

Good luck!

It's a 75% bonus for SG on QF/JQ and 50% on BA/AA.

Not to mention seat selection, being higher in the upgrade pecking order, priority baggage, check in and selected int boarding, increased checked baggage allowance, etc....

Plus the other OW benefits, eg no checked baggage fees on AA.

Thanks for your responses Lindsay Wilson and asg29e. I am literally in awe of you! I am almost embarrassed to admit how long I was going around in circles for, to a point where I was considering overnight stays, a drive to Canberra etc. haha. You've given me some food for thought and I suspect I'm going to spend another chunk of time tonight with this. I can see how easily one can get hooked to this! Thanks again.

Oh, Thanks Markis10 and angusburns for your responses too, which i have only just seen. Seems that staring at the Qantas site for hours in a day can affect one's vision...
