No I said that once you earn enough money to pay your bills working extra (which is taxed at the top rate) is a disincentive to go to work in my case.

If I needed the money i'd work 7/7 if I had to

As I wrote, glass half empty. $45 tax stops you from appreciating the $55 in your pocket. If we take that attitude we should all stop working once we hit the 15% tax bracket.

Maybe you should look for a job you actually enjoy.

I'm sure. So would most people. It's called survival.

But if you can't survive on $180k+, you're doing something very wrong.

Actually I really like my job but there's more to life than work.

Now if I paid less than $180K tax pa that would be nice but I suppose I'd have a lot less frequent flyer points

Because $55 = $85 now I see

So you enjoy your work, and clearly make more than enough money to live comfortably, yet you want us to believe if your tax rate was lower you'd work more ?

That's absolute BS. Every workplace I've been that had shared cars had a log book. Extremely easy to maintain a log book for pooled cars.

So you know what happens everywhere do you?I have had cars supplied where the last log book entry was more than 5000km previously.Offhand I cant remember one whose logbook was complete.

So what? You mention a few specific failures no doubt unpoliced because of the government's lack of enforcement. However, if policed it is actually extremely easy to enforce. I'm yet to see anything like what you describe in 20 years at 3 universities, 3 state government departments, one commonwealth government department, one hospital and one private business. Using multiple different pool cars at each workplace. YMMV.

Well put it this way if it was higher I definitely wouldn't work more.

But I don't really have a problem with the tax rates in Australia as they are but I would like to be able to put some money in super without it being taxed at 30% that I don't agree with.

Has there ever been a more lopsided election down here from a betting point of view?

It's interesting that Eden-Monaro is no longer the indicator seat.

I think it will be worse for the ALP than that but I'd take it 

Correct. It doesn't truly indicate the bloodbath that awaits the ALP in Tassie or NSW or VIC or SA or WA.......:D

We need to move this thread on and start talking about who will lead the ALP in the weeks that follow?

Can't see Billy putting his hand up for a 9+ year stint in the cheap seats.........the talent pool will be very shallow!

I dont think there will be such a bloodbath in SA. Adelaide and Hindmarsh are expected to stay, just with the Labor and the seat that is the most marginalised was won last time, by a couple of hundred votes, by the Libs, so that just becomes a safer Lib seat. And that's it.

I think the interesting thing will be to see if Rudd commits to a full term if Labor loses. Just can't see him doing that somehow.

I really like Terese Rein.

Apparently Abbott is keeping the ALP tax on deposits. Anyone know more? Can confirm?

Election betting has only been available so freely for the last 2-3 federal elections. The most extreme I've seen was in QLD's most recent election where all betting was suspended over 3 weeks out due to the flood of money for the Coalition at 1.01. Right now you can still get 1.04 about the Coalition on Betfair and 21 about the ALP with ~$4M in the pool. So not nearly as extreme as QLD, but as lopsided as I can remember federally.

You'd have to think ALP +20.5 seats at 3.50 is value but I have a rule not to back 3 legged donkeys even with 20 lengths start

But I don't really have a problem with the tax rates in Australia as they are [...]

You make a lot of noise about them for someone without much of a problem.

[...] but I would like to be able to put some money in super without it being taxed at 30% that I don't agree with.

You can pull it out later at 0%. What are you complaining about ?

Or are you arguing a better system would be to put it in at 0% then have it taxed at whatever the relevant marginal rate was on withdrawal as regular income ?
