Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I think you're missing the point that many people in the UK really do want to come here. It's paradise...
Mmmm. Son is pretty happy in UK right now and DIL is desperate to return.

Which particular aspects of communism?
Well the having to apply for an exit permit is pretty communist. (As an aside, my mother who grew up in an actual communist state is finding living in australia during this period pretty triggering and psychologically tough.)

I think re 2020 - I am from melbourne so don’t have that “life’s so much better in Oz”. My 2020 would have been pretty miserable regardless of whether I’d been in the U.K. or Australia (actually on balance I think I’d prefer to have been in the U.K. even then).

Ha that’s true - I forget that most asian countries are pretty restrictive too.

Although here, anyone can leave, it can be difficult to get back if you don't have the right to be here permanently. Citizens and Permanent Residents (thankfully I'm the latter) can leave and come back, for those working on work permits they must get permission to return which can be difficult for most countries (not Australia though). But citizens are not prevented from seeing relatives overseas if they are willing to do the time on return (in HQ, which was 2 weeks, then 3 weeks but now going back to 2 weeks for most countries, except Australia, China, Brunei & NZ where no HQ required), and plenty more HQ places made available per capita.

Which particular aspects of communism?

For a start, the inability to even leave the country. The controlling of freedoms - at one point premiers were telling people they couldn't even sleep together. Rules such as you can only travel within a 5 km radius.

We move to now and "snap lockdowns" are called at the drop of a hat. People being forced into hotels. People not even allowed to see dying family members.

It's funny how some people say "how dare you compare what is going on in Australia to communist states where there are less freedoms and people are jailed etc" - but how much further before we get there? Do you remember when the government threatened anyone coming from India for a period of time will face jail time? Or did you somehow miss that?

And if you think it is for "health reasons" - explain to me why some people have been exempt from these rules and the law is conveniently broken for events like the Australian Open?

I think some people should go live or try to liver in China or Russia for a few years & come back & let us know how it went & where you'd prefer to live.
Now can't wait to hear someone who had lived in China, C'mon, now tell me it's preferable over Australia.

Australia communist oh my.

We should be a universe away from those countries. We aren't.

New variants of Covid-19 emerging in poor countries are 'unpredictable' and could evade vaccines, Scott Morrison has warned.

The Prime Minister backed his policy to keep international borders closed as other countries relax restrictions, saying he won't 'recklessly' trade places with nations that still have high numbers of cases and deaths.

'Once you let it in you can't get it out,' he said of the virus in an interview with Sunrise.

Sunrise host Natalie Barr asked the Prime Minister why Australians are facing restrictions while nations like the US and the UK, who have largely vaccinated their populations, are opening up.

Mr Morrison said: 'In Australia we don't have the virus at rates seen in other countries.

'If we would take the steps that others seem to be suggesting, we would have to be comfortable with 5,000 cases a day. Now I don't think Australians would be happy with that.

SO it looks like no amount of other countries opening up (even if we are the only ones closed) will pressure the feds to open up.

Agree - we had to close our Shanghai office and move it to Singapore because people were churning out of there every 9 months.... because anyone living in a first world democratic country simply had no idea despite all the reading in the world, just how China is to live in, truly...

I think some people need to understand that this is not a parallel that exists apart from in their minds...

It's a complex issue and far from straight forward. On the one hand life is incredibly free in China, paradoxically because there is little freedom of the press. Australia has advantages like good health care. I would not want to be poor in either country.

And our representative politicians have shown it's perfectly safe to mix work with holiday on a trip OS!

I've reminded SA's most vocal Senator (Birmingham) of similar first reply was that he wanted to focus on SA residents feelings so he wanted to check I lived in SA (and had the potential to vote for him). Duly supplied. Waiting for the next one!

If we were really a communist country we’d have 5 vaccine candidates by now one of which looks pretty promising.

But unfortunately those 5 might be very similiar to that other country China which is developing multiple vaccines. Some have looked fine in trials and authorised by the WHO but in the real world countries that are using those vaccines are experiencing large surges in Covid cases.

My goodness me.Being a casual contact in Australia is very different from coming from OS.Very few countries with fewer cases than Australia.
Bit rich from those from the UK who are seeing another surge in cases with the majority being the delta variant.

Even hospitalisations and deaths starting to rise again.

And the NSW politicians are doing things by the NSW rules.

Casual contacts

A casual contact is someone who has been near a confirmed case of COVID-19 while they were infectious but is considered by NSW Health at lower risk than a close contact.
Some casual contacts however may have a higher risk of infection associated with exposure to a COVID-19 confirmed case and will be asked to

get tested immediately and
isolate until a negative test result is received.

If you are evaluated as either a higher risk casual contact or lower risk a casual contact

watch for COVID-19 symptoms

immediately get tested if you develop any symptoms.

When you are tested for COVID-19, return home immediately and self-isolate until you receive your test result.

It does when it does and doesn’t when it doesn’t. Depends how convenient it is for the overlords 😂

The WA Police Commissioner has recently returned from a Conference in Canberra after which he returned via Sydney. He has tested negative but is in self-quarantine for 14 days.

To quote him - “I have to follow the rules like any other member of the community and am regrettably missing a family wedding as a result of my quarantine requirements."

For all the talk, there is no sign of even wanting to be prepared
Well this gives plausible deniability. They can deny any dates or targets have been set before the election then suddenly have “medical advice” that changes everything a few months after the election.
