Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I hope travel bubbles open up before December 17 even if quarantine is required. If we can’t travel till December 18 getting away for Christmas may be impossible with huge demand and limited seats. I’d be prepared to go earlier in December.

I think the Dec 17 date is there so that all the IT backend has been implemented before the border opens. Eg. Vaccine passport apps, etc.

December 17 is the standard 3 month extension. They can change the ban or even get rid of it entirely at any time.
They can also open up the exemption categories and amend the caps as well without repealing the whole thing, there's a lot of space to move.

As I've maintained for a while, the QF announcement was done with all ducks lined up and fuelled waiting for clearance for 16R/34L at Sydney.

Currently booked to fly BNE-SIN departing 11pm 17/12 if you can believe that.

EDIT: Does the extension to 17/12 mean it expires 11:59pm 16/12 or 11:59pm 17/12?

I think the original rule was made on 18/3 with it ending at 3 months (ie 1159pm 17/6). Given the quarterly extension I think/guess 11:59pm 17/12.

We booked this flight back at the end of December when it was released. Makes me wonder what SQ will do with this flight. Have they even been operating it to this point? Probably not. May end up being rebooked on some other flight that is more likely to operate.

SQ have def been operating late night services out of aus capitals - my sister in law flew out from melbourne on SQ on an 1130pm service this week. I imagine they’d just shift the flight time by an hour if it was a 2359 end time. Keep the faith!

With the extra 4 million Pfizer doses in the UK swap deal, I think the chances of travel before Christmas are increasing.

There will be no excuse for adults not to be fully vaccinated well before Christmas.

Any adult can have AZ now. And any adult eligible for Pfizer will have had plenty of opportunity to have had their first dose if not this month, next month sometime.

With increasing supply the gap between Pfizer doses at state hubs should be able to be brought back down to 3 weeks by sometime in November at the latest one would think.

There's also the Moderna supply that's coming over coming months.

I'm not ready to book travel before Christmas yet, but my hopes are certainly going up today.

I agree with your message but it doesn’t cover those elderly who for whatever reason wanted to choose Pfizer. And that would include over 50s.

It might also not deal with the woeful rollout in some remote, indigenous and disability communities - in some cases as low as 10% due to logistics

Well the PM is sending them a letter telling them to get AZ. We can't wait forever for those who refuse to help themselves.
Dan saying VIC going to start home based quarantine trials, starting with stranded Victorians.
That's a positive step. Did he say when?

Soon for stranded victorians in NSW, and seems like only for the vaccinated, but no clear date.
Well that doesn't help the Victorians stranded overseas. Another trial that's not testing the general population returning from overseas, but still better than nothing.

Techicnally he referred to the National plan which allowed overseas travel where the state and national average was both above threshold if I remember correctly.

If remote communities are hard to vaccinate owing to logistics, then they are probably also afforded another layer of protection. Lot of discussion at the presser with the PM today on what they are doing to overcome vaccine hesitancy in indigenous communities.

From The Guardian blog

The PM is asked if he would envisage the international border opening when the country reaches 80%, even if some states don’t want to/aren’t open.

Yes. The National plan sets out that clearly.
