Q Bag Tag - do you Carry on?

Re: First time through the frosted black doors

The problem with the original WP Q Tags is that they looked like PS tags. Absolutely no use for any self respecting DYKWIA. I spent more than an hour coloring mine in with a black texter. :p

Re: First time through the frosted black doors

I do think that q tags on small items like laptop bags is kind of douchey though.

Agree totally, and the whole process is dehumanizing and takes longer than the old personal style check in often, love flying QF in ports that don't have the machines. Conversely, I like using the self check outs at Supermarkets!

how can you say it takes longer markis10? I used it a few weeks ago going to CBR as I could be bothered carrying my bag, and it took less than 1 minute from when i entered the airport at MEL til I was in the security line after dropping my bag at the bag drop. How is that taking longer? Yes there is less human intervention, but hey that is happening everywhere now.

So the concensus here is that the NGCI tags for most carry on items is over the top?

How about the old FF tags?

Yep, agree. Pretty sure I read on AFF somewhere that QF actually have more staff on the floor with NGCI than they did previously? I dont think this is true, but if it is then help is theoretically not far away if you need it.

I have used the bag drop system a few times when traveling with others and have found it to be really speedy and efficient. I would say overall I'm getting into the airport quicker now. Getting out of the airport is another issue however (where bag collection is concerned).

I think if someone is not comfortable dealing with computers or kiosks they might find the experience slower. Especially late at night in SYD, there are often no staff to be seen in the check-in area.

Back on topic, I would say having a q tag on my carry on has increased my social interactions in foreign countries a little bit. People (mainly Aussies) ask if I'm from AU and then we get chatting and what not. It's a nice side effect I guess.

Also I much prefer the look of the red tags. If I had one it would replace my PS/WP tag on my rollaboard.

The red tags are still 2 for 1 last time i checked in the Qantas Club. well i did see the sign there. So 2 for $50

This!

I don't think that there is any difference between the old tags and the Qtags in this regard- in fact the old WP tags are much more obvious and could be considered more DYKWIA...

I don't put he q-tags on my laptop bag as they are just too bulky.

I think there is a difference. The old tags are a generic label whereas the Q tags have a function to track the routing of checked in luggage. I think that tracking function places a boundary on the identification function of the Q tag. As such I do wonder if people are missing the points of the Qtags when they attached them to minuscule carry on bags that will never be checked in.

On the flip side QF no longer provide tags for purely identification purposes that would previously have been used for carry on luggage.

There is a space on the back of the q-tag for FF number and a phone number - pretty much all you need to track down the owner of the bag. Other detail in the old tags is somewhat unnecessary/less important. I think i would be very unlikely for someone to find my laptop bag and just deliver it to myhouse without calling me - at which point I can give them my address.

The added advantage to less details (maybe a disadvantage for some) is that if I want to stalk the pretty woman in the lounge, instead of scanning her old tag which would give me her address I now have to actually call her to get her address (not that hard to do a bit of social engineering given I have her FF number and know that she was in the lounge at X time/date).

<snip> In any event I think for the DYKWIA reverse snobs we should adopt our own even more exclusive tags that only fellow AFF's recognise and for that reason need to be attached to cabin baggage.

You mean like these;

(Could only find an image with the gold background instead of the final version with the red background)

yes, but again the primary function of a Qtag is to route checked luggage. IMO that places a boundary on the intended use of those tags.

Re: First time through the frosted black doors

This reminded me of something I meant to comment on the other week, but forgot about, and that is the people who use their bag tags on their cabin luggage. Seriously? I know that they may be excited about their Q tags, but who puts a bag/status tag on cabin luggage? It's just a case of DYKWIA, when the answer is: "no one important"...

There are certainly DYKWIAs out there, but not sure I'd agree with such a sweeping generalisation. While I don't tag my hand luggage I can see why some people who travel with 2 cases (1 checked, 1 carry-on), and have had 2 Q-tags kindly supplied to them by Qantas, may logically see a reason to place the second tag, (with say a contact name/phone number written on it in case they somehow become separated from it), on their carry-on bag rather than having it sit unused in a drawer at home (or sold on e-bay, as may be the case ).

I have a cabin bag that I put the tag on. Sometimes, I check this bag (when it's super heavy), and sometimes I take it on board. So I'm one of those people with a WP bag tag on the cabin baggage at times.

As others have said, people only have one bag to check, but get two tags. For them it might seem sensible to put their name and address on it and use it as a name tag. After all, otherwise it just gets lost!

Ay-Thang-Yaw'll (Google Arthur Askey!!)

the following has nothing to do with tuapekastar's post....I just wanted to acknowledge myself as a DYKWIA...for the time being anyway! :p

Seriously though folks does it matter if FF's attach their Q Tags to their hand luggage? Most of us post here with a signature or details of our status and memberships. It's no bad thing to take pride in accomplishments. It takes a bit of dedication to meet any FF level so good luck to anyone who wants to advertise their success. :)

Something about the CL lounge and first time entry. (...to keep on topic :p)

Re: First time through the frosted black doors

Flying J:
- Whenever I use the Qtags the luggage is last off the conveyor.
- Whenever I use paper tags, my luggage is first off.

I now use paper tags for checkin purposes in J.

mrsdoc and I have 4 between us (both SG):
- I initially had a QTag on each checked suitcase (large x2) and on each carryon rollaboard
- I've left the carryon ones there to use as id tags when mrsdoc "unexpectedly" does a bit too much shopping and I have to check a bag (newly purchased) on the way home. International and domestic.
- one of the checked tags are now attached to a roll up "emergency check" bag (from Kathmandu) that avoids me having to buy another bag (sometimes).
- one of the checked tags is randomly attached somewhere that I dont know where it is. I havent gone looking for it.

I have all 4 on the inside of my bag on the off chance I’ll need to check a bag. Agreed, I’m unlikely to need to check 4, but I like having all the flavours :p other than black of course.

Not a good move - the readers could lock on to any particular one of these at any of the stages in the process - your luggage is quite likely not to make it to you actual destination.

lol last time I used a Q Bag Tag (which is most of the time), my bag went to Darwin instead of Perth (from Syd).

I was recommended for connections to use paper tags.

I will be using the Service desk from now on if I have connections, (usually CBR-SYD-PER) or reverse.

If I'm going CBR-SYD or CBR-MEL, I'll prob just use the tags.

Actually (serious post here) I am open to any donations - I need a few more bag tags for my coaster collection, I am especially interested in GOLD and BLACK

:)

seriously...
