Qantas Cash Card

re: Qantas Cash Card

This is a half-ar$3 attempt of a reasonable idea; pristine reflection of the current state of affairs at Qantas, unfortunately. How on earth can they have a card in the 21st century without the ability to change the PIN for example??!! And now confirmation that pre-authorisation takes 30 days to expire??!! What sort of management tolerate such incompetence?

Just keep bashing Qantas. It's a MasterCard

Huh? Why do my other mastercards allow me to 1. change my pin #, 2. communicate by email and 3. immediately reverse voided payments. If Qantas is allowing its brand to be associated with a debit card, it is essential it is associated with a best of class card, not a substandard one.

All your Other MasterCard's.......are they Credit cards or Debit cards?

It's a MasterCard, run by MasterCard, not Qantas. Qantas most probably has no say in how the program ( the same as any 3rd party suppliers ie Aust Post etc, has no control over there program) has been run in its early stages.
With a normal credit card, all these pre-auth's and un-allowed transactions etc are still in place but being a credit account you are allowed full use up to the extent of your credit limit and you may never know how much is tied up, however using any cash card ( not just QF), you are only using what you have previously put into the account. Once it has been ear-marked for a transaction then you need to wait until it is deemed as not needed to complete that transaction as per its T&C's.

re: Qantas Cash Card

I thought it was very clear that this is a voided transaction, not a pre-authorisation, and yes, I do have two other mastercard debit cards and I am able to choose my own pin number and I can communicate with the issuer by email. The email finally sent to James1 ignored the fact that this transaction was "voided" and treated the transaction as a pre-authorisation which it wasn't.

Cut and paste from James 1 's post, to me, is showing that it is a pre-auth.

Dear.............

Please be assured that I have now completed a thorough investigation into this matter and your comments have been carefully considered. I appreciate your concerns and can confirm that the transaction in question relates to a pre-authorisation.

Getting away from all this, why must we bag and rubbish QF. wake up, it isn't under QF control

WHAT??? This is a Qantas-marketed product. I have not seen any other Mastercard product that has similar "features". Mastercard runs the backend; think of resellers of, say, Optus, services. Are they all the same?

re: Qantas Cash Card

I can't believe this card can't be used for in flight purchases on jetstar.

What a fail.

re: Qantas Cash Card

Offline payments can't be accepted as it's not a credit card AFAIK

re: Qantas Cash Card

Just to clarify, MasterCard is the interchange provider, and the card is issued by Heritage Bank who run the card accounts on behalf of QF. Pre-auth time limits are typically set by the card issuer, not Visa/MasterCard/Amex. So it does come down to poor product design in part.

The bank also has the ability to cancel the pre-auth, but in the absence of decent customer service, they direct you back to the merchant.

As for a void that held funds, that seems a plain and simple error which should be rectified by the card issuer immediately on request.

I've read the PDS, and agree with serfty. This product sucks. But then again, so do all pre-paid debit 'travel' cards. They are a rip off with their poor exchange rates and high fees.

Domestic use for points earn is fine, but read the PDS and beware the caveats.

re: Qantas Cash Card

I thought I would test this card out by making an online train ticket purchase with Deutsche Bahn. So, I transferred the cost of the ticket (€39), waited the three days for the money to load, and then when I tried to make the purchase it said that the bank did not authorise the transaction and it didn't go through. Now on "My Account", this is listed as "Purchase - pending".

What a fail...

From my own experience some Qantas Cash Transactions process incredibly quickly ( take for example.... Surprise, surprise Expedia Brazil).... whilst others ( a Major supermarket Chain in Australia ) will be pending for over a week.

Never quite understand the banks & their electronic payment methods sometimes.

When you say pending, is that just on the statement or does it actually take a week to process the payment?

Online Qantas Cash transactions show as "pending"..... but payment is successful in the end.

Somewhat confusing I know!

I would keep an eye on that Deutsche Bahn Transaction..... it may well go through in the end for you.

Not on Qantas cash, but on my ANZ CC statement online before I' ve noticed that i had the same transaction debited twice (From none other than my Favourite Fine Dining American Restaurant :p).... but after a couple days, even without a phone call one transaction automatically gets reversed.

Most recently, I bought two domestic Japan flights on the JAL Website a few weeks ago (not with Qantas Cash but again with ANZ CC)..... the transaction took well over a week to appear on my Statement & payment to be debited....... strange:?:

Hmm... I hope the transaction doesn't go through in the end because I've already re-booked using a different card. Perhaps a phone call is in order.

qantas is marketing this card, and IIRC qantas is making money out of this card.

they are marketing this card and making money out of their customer base.

they are therefore in part responsible.

re: Qantas Cash Card

Mrs GPH has done her numbers and has declared it not worth the effort, a poor exchange rate making it a little too dear to consider.

I have found the exchange rate average. This week I changed AUD 900 to UKP. Qantas Cash gave me £2 more than the CBA for it's travel card. Not a lot I know but on that basis I wouldn't describe QC as 'poor'.

re: Qantas Cash Card

was there a legal basis behind the removal of the inactivity fee?
If it were a legal thing, you would expect that all other cards would have the same issue. As far as I can tell, no other card has removed the fee, so I guess the answer is no. I concur with other views that it is likely to be about trying to remove barriers to taking up the card.

And how much more would you have gotten if you had withdrawn from a standard debit/credit card product? I'd suggest a few more than 2GBP. The travel cards are a ripoff, regardless of the provider.

Agreed.

How does one extract money in currencies other than AUD whilst in Australia from the card (say if I had not spent as many Euros as planned) and at what rate? The initial conversion rate or the rate of the day?
