Qantas Cash Card

re: Qantas Cash Card

For QantasCash, you can transfer any unused funds back to Aud$ from any of the currency on it, but the forex rate is stacked towards them, both when you move funds from AUD$ to (eg) USD$, and then after the trip back again. I did some purchases in forex, using the QCC and when after the transaction, when I did the check, the forex rate was not in my gain.
No fees for moving money around, which is good.
Right now, there is no real point of difference between the QantasCash card and the VelocityGlobalWallet card, both don't have load fees, both don't have transaction fees, both earn the same rate (0.5 a point per $1 spent in Aust), 1:$1 spent overseas.
Add: $2.95 plus something, for using the QCC at an ANZ forex ATM, there are some around, that will let you withdraw money (not in AUD$) while still in Australia.

re: Qantas Cash Card

Agreed.

How does one extract money in currencies other than AUD whilst in Australia from the card (say if I had not spent as many Euros as planned) and at what rate? The initial conversion rate or the rate of the day?

If you withdraw in AUD you will pay to convert it back at today's rate. This could result in a loss or gain. Now you can play the currency markets - we've discovered a new feature ;)

Interesting thought... Although the buy/sell rates are both stacked in QF's favour so the exchange rate fluctuation would have to be significant for that to be worthwhile.

Thanks folks. So no difference to the CBA product then. Once bitten, twice shy in my case.

re: Qantas Cash Card

I'm leaving for France next week and was trying to purchase a french SIM card from a french provider website for 20 euros.
I used the Qantas Cash card since I had already Euros loaded. The transaction was declined, I tried multiple times.
I ended up using my AMEX card. I rang the service center and they told me they blocked the card because I tried to
purchase a french product from Australia. Those type transaction are causing a block. Lucky I rang them because they
did not advise of this. I would have had a nice surprise in France trying to use the card. Can anybody confirm this?
I haven't heard that before

You would need the currency to shift by almost 10% in most cases, I just did a transfer to NZ and back, $1 AUD became $1.03NZ and then transferred back became AUD$0.91

Hence my prior point that this product is expensive and rubbish ;)

Sounds odd and implausible. I recently used my card to purchase (from Australia) a city walking tour in euros. No problem. I did have some trouble with a train fare in UKP but it would through when I said it was a debit card rather than a credit card.

On the contrary I'm finding it excellent value and highly useful touring around the UK. Accepted everywhere, even for small transactions, and the FX rates are the same as everyone elses.

As as aside there are very few tap-and-go terminals in the UK. Only come across one so far.

Funny you mention that, because in the last week I've had two dodgy experiences using QF Cash for online purchases in foreign currency. I've previously purchased a couple of items (approx £70/$120-odd AUD) overseas and had absolutely no problems with the card.

However, last Friday I attempted to make a significantly more expensive purchase (which I openly admit was to rort the double points offer) overseas in US currency, and the transaction was blocked all four times .

Skip forward to Monday when I was making another USD purchase on an international website (also over $200 AUD). That turned into a fiasco where the merchant failed to receive payment (and hence the order didn't go through), yet the card itself was debited the full amount. As of right now, it's still pending on my QF card, and when I called up today to discuss it they said it would take until next Monday to see whether the payment would go to the merchant or end up being rejected.

Twice in four days where the card has failed me on a foreign currency purchase through an international site (i.e. non-AU domain extn). Two failures inside four days within the double points period. No problems on any international currency transactions before the promo began.

That's one hell of a coincidence

That is incorrect!

The 28° MasterCard or the Citibank Plus Debit Visa have forex rates generally about 3% better than most other publicly available forex facilites.

Unless you are willing to pay ~3% or more for rewards points (I will do this on occasion) then those are much better options than most credit, debit or charge cards including the Qantas Cash card (or any similar product).

Yes, this is true, both in my Wallet for exactly this reason.

I haven't got those cards so that's not helpful for me. I compared Travelex, CBA & Australia Post's cards and they were all with $2 of each other on the amount i wanted in UKP. The reward points are valuable to me -- that's how I get overseas in the first place.

re: Qantas Cash Card

yesterday i put 50 hkd of value on three prepaid sims. the purchase is pending, of course. but meanwhile they have charged me 25 aud for each transaction! plus 71 cents currency conversion charge. i will wait to see if it corrects itself. if it doesnt ........ this is highway robbery! if it does correct, they have borrowed at least 60 aud for the weekend

re: Qantas Cash Card

28 Deg MasterCard is generally used for my PayPal purchases. Much better than the ripoff DCC rates

It has been notoriously difficult to purchase French sims online without a French credit card. It may have changed since last year. The site wouldn't even accept our friend's French debit card.

That's correct: you've gone into debit by purchasing before the credit has been applied. You can't deposit and charge on the same day (if you start from a zero balance). I know it's a pain but you must wait until you get an email advising your credit is now in place. It's takes an annoying three days.

I used LeFrench Mobile. The is provider targets tourists by mailing SIM cards. I don't believe they have any stores.
I never used them before, so cant comment on any specific other that the cost are reasonable.

re: Qantas Cash Card

Hi all
Just to save me from trawling through all the pages, I am going to Bali shortly and was wondering which currencey I should load. By default I have been loading aussie dollars. I only intend to use for cash withdrawals, in Indonesian money.
What currency should I load the card in and why?

Also why is it that the QFF card does not have Indonesian money on it as a default, with so many OZ people going there, it seems logical to me.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Cheers
