Qantas FF and Woolworths create new loyalty alliance

FWIW, the QFF terms and conditions have been updated with a privacy term related to this

Danka, I had wondered why Qantas updated their T&C's in early June. I think you've answered my question...

You can just photocopy it and it works, on self check out anyway.
Or you could photocopy it and glue it onto the back of another card if you were really worried. I don't think they care as long as it beeps when scanned :) and is not a photocopy of a staff discount card!

They may get a little sus if the "same" card is regularly scanned both in Brisbane and Sydney on the same days ...

And here I was thinking you'd have to at least make it believable for them. I guess it really depends how grumpy the checkout person you choose is.

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been covered. Does this mean you can earn points on your credit card by paying for the Woolies purchase and then still earn points on your everyday rewards for over $30??

Yes. You can double dip.

The card won't be scanned in Brisbane, no point as I do not shop enough, it will only be scanned in Sydney while I am in Brisbane....

Maybe we can explain we are frequent flyers? :) I do make day trips to Melb or Canberra on occasions!

Each everyday rewards card has a barcode, and that barcode differentiates each card I'm sure. So, swiping someone else's would mean they'd get the points, not you.

If you're suggesting making your own cards with the same barcode, good luck. I'd imagine it's possible.

Note though, if you lose your card, they want you to get another one and un-register the old one, registering the new number/barcode. They don't send replacement cards.

Can someone please clarify: Is it a barcode or is it a magnetic strip?

If it is a barcode, then it would be easy to photocopy the card and get other people to use photocopies.

If it is a magnetic strip, then it would be harder as you would need to find someone with the equipment to copy and write the magnetic strip data.

It's a barcode.

Held in front of the scanner on checkout, much like any other food item.

Just because you can photocopy the back of the card doesn't mean they're going to be happy with you doing that.

I usually do 3 or 4 small shops a week getting fresh veg/fruit, bread, meat and milk as needed...under this scheme it's looks like I'll need to do just the one biggie or miss out on the points :(

hmmm I wonder if Woolies' tech heads had been monitoring the shopping habits of their customers...seems spooky that they've plucked the magic figure of $30 out of thin air if not (that being the approximate amount I spend at Woolies every 2 days and the same for many people I know  ).

The reasoning for it being every dollar over $30 seems to be that you need to spend that much for the fuel voucher currently, after you have achieved the fuel voucher you can earn points.

It's meant to drive spending I guess, if they set it below the amount required for a fuel voucher, they may as well just give away miles to people.

It's been a minimum spend of $30 for a while, since before the EDR cards were introduced.

I don't get the real need for the correlation. That said, Coles have done the same thing with their $5 gift card offer. Only transactions over the $30 threshold count for accruals on it. (What a surprise the supermarkets doing the same thing!)

The reason for the $30 limit??

Well Woolles have been one of Australia's best run companies for years....so we know that they will have done their market research.

My guess is that for purchases of about $30 and under that these are virtually all convenience purchases.
ie
  • bottle of wine on the way out
  • missing ingredient for dinner
  • cigarettes
  • milk and bread
  • something you need now.
For such purcahses buyers are going to go to the closest store whether it be Coles or Woolies/Safeways. 10-30 FF points will not sway people.

So Woollies can save themselves $$$ by not giving these points...as effectively it would gain them little or nothing.

Whereas for your weekly shop...well 200 points might sway some people to drivea bit further to get to a Coles rather than a neary Woolies/Safeways.

Hi there

I'm with JohnK on this one.

I am a courier and buy around $20 of fuel (at the current price) each morning, if i bought $40 of fuel evey 2 days this would give me 30 QFF points a week, so in 25 years i would have amassed 39000 points.(assuming i bought $40 of fuel 3 days a week for 52 weeks of the year)

I think i have the maths right

Short sighted both of you. It is another avenue to collect points.

I like the fact that I will be able to get my other 2 children signed up for free QFF membership.

If this is the only activity you do to collect points you are right that it is as bad almost as flybuys but I have amassed 120000 points since October with limited flights. My target is return F flights for self and wife on BA LHR-JFK in July 2011

From what I have seen of the material Woolworths have so far published, they don't say this will get you free flights. Just that it will get you some FF points.

Somewhat different to the original proposition of FlyBuys that you could get flights, and even they are back pedalling on that,

This is great! Although since I don't do most of the shopping (and any that I do is small pickings, i.e. would give no points), it has rather limited use for me, however I wonder if I can get my parents on side for this one. (My mum does most of the shopping, however she always goes for the cheapest, not really for any sort of loyalty, which means her shopping patterns vary every week). Maybe I can offer to do the shopping for them!

As well, there are more Coles/Shell service stations around than Woolworths+Petrol ones, which explains a lot why I go to Coles more than Woolworths.

I'm not a member of Everyday Rewards right now - is it free to join, or is there a fee (i.e. purchasing the card from the store)? The website FAQ doesn't cover this.

This new avenue for points will give people more ways of getting some reward flights but hopefully not near (except for a few people) the premium awards. Premium awards should be for frequent flyers (real ones), not frequent shoppers or frequent credit card users. This might help a family save a bit on the cost of ticket for that annual interstate trip.

.

Your mum will probably save moe money then by keeping on chasing of specials etc.

Remember that at 1 cent per point it is onlya 1 % saving.

At 4 cents a point if you fly business class...it is only 4% saving.

Personally I will keep chasing specials too (ie a particular Coles I go to always has a good range of meet mared down each Monday/Tuesday by 30-50% and so I will continue to do this and forgo a FF point at Safeways.)
I will also continur to do a weekly NQR run as they have great specials....and my local greengrocer is far cheaper on most items than Safeways. So I will save $$$ up front and forgo points which would not offset by enough value.

Maybe I can offer to do the shopping for them!

.

Depends on how you value your time.

10,000 points at 1 cent per point is $100.

$400 if you get 4 cents per point.

Though add on CC earn.

Though if your mum is a good shopper,,,and it sound like she is....on $10,000 a year you will probably cost her $1000- $3000...as that is the type of saving that can be achieved by shopping well.

TIP!!!!

Ok..from reading other forums it appears from Staff who are already earning points that all purchases on the one day contribute to a single points claculation as long as $30 each time is spent.

ie
A spend of $31, $42 and $33 earns 76 points and not just 16 points.

Now this mya just be a bug in the early testing (which is why I am sure they have rolled out to staff first) or it may be how it will run.

This actually makes sense as many Safeways have sepearte liqor departments and you are forced to do seperate transactions. This way the two or more Tx will be pooled.

Now once extra stores are rlled in...it would be even better if the pooling was across all business and not just per store type. Here's hoping.
