I only recently spotted the news that UA will run their new 789's MEL-LAX direct. So the airline that was once the airline of last resort will be running the new equipment. If VA were to ever join *A then QF would be well and truly done for out of MEL.

UA and VA combined will still not offer as many nonstop seats to LAX as QF already do, so still advantage to QF I think.

Really? QF do run their 388's direct to LAX so why the doomsday prediction based on the 789?

If VA joined *A.
I think then regionally with SQ, NZ and potential UA codeshare, QF will be an also ran, having a very big plane won't help them.

SQ isn't going to provide feed, they already have their own flights to the USA, ditto for NZ. VA only fly MEL-LAX 3 times a week. UA codeshares on VA's domestic flights could be a help, but they would likely have to drop their partnership with DL. I still think QF has the advantage here.

Indeed, they do have the advantage today and lets see how it plays out. They had the advantage to SIN, to AKL and other destinations but not any more. I think that VA would like to get rid of their MEL-LAX service and a UA codeshare would be just the ticket at some point.

When did QF ever have an advantage to SIN against SQ?

Do you mean with the pathetic UA lounge in MEL ?
OR
The fact that you need to pay for alcohol in Y ?

UA is still the last 2 picks for me, on the USA route. If they get a new lounge, and upgrade their food/beverage offering then I would be interested again.

1. QF A380
2. NZ 77W
3. VA 77W
4. QF 744R
5. DL 77L
6. UA 787
7. UA 777

Internationally I used to fly QF ex-Australia perhaps 6 out of 10 flights. Now it's close to zero. 3 years ago I never flew VA and they were a LCC now they have most of my domestic business. 10 years ago NZ were unreliable rubbish and now they are excellent. 40 years ago my parents flew Pan Am on a regular basis. And right now UA are going forwards and QF are going nowhere much.

Recently went LHR-LAX. One way was on AA in J the other BA in J. AA won that comparison hands down, wouldn't have imagined that a few years ago.

Now tell me what do NZ and AA (and UA for that matter) have in common? Yep legacy carriers who restructured and relaunched after near collapse. In both cases the restructure resulted in long established legacy costs being reduced, which guess what? Freed up money for product enhancements. VA on the other hand has an established low cost base and is moving up, with the fiscal backing of some large airlines.

So tell me if Qantas is hamstrung by it's cost base and shackled by the Qantas sale act, that limits new money, what exactly do you expect them to do and how?

UA is not going forward, cutting back alcohol in Y for a long flight while Delta introduces spirits in Y....
AA is an airline going forward in a great way, they just need to order a bucketload more 77W's
3 years ago I moved all my domestic flying to VA, then after a year moved it all back to QF :p Recently tried VA again for a few flights, not much had changed so back to QF again..

Agree with your general sentiment though, that things change. NZ used to be cough now they are outstanding

That is nothing new. Though since the Continental merger they have certainly improved, well at least domestically.

EBA is classified as 'stored' at brisbane. Is it finished with jetstar now or just under heavy maintenance?

OEF left AVV on Thursday. There is no further maintenance planned at the site. Most employees have already finished up.

Thats to be expected, not much you can do in the way of a C or D check in two weeks.

Tomorrow a B744 operates QF107 SYD to LAX however the return is operated by A388 and QF12 isn't scheduled.

Both QF15/16 are scheduled as normal. Does this mean another aircraft is off for retirement? OJC left on Tuesday.

These 744 retirements are making me nervous. Mrs_O and I have a Y+ booking on QF51/52 in June ( br special) and I'm wondering what will happen if it is operated by 333!

OJS operating QF15 and OEH operating QF107. Neither of these aircraft are being retired, as they are refurbs,

there must be a charter or something resulting in the cancellation of QF12.
