Exactly. Unless there is another DSC offer I'm probably unlikely to keep WP. I would like to keep it though.and they also then need to fly more to actually keep said status..

Whatever the motive behind this DSC promotion, it was a clever move on QF's part: score more early bookings, bait the travellers who are short of reaching a new level, etc. I also think the game plan was also to keep VA at bay. VA are starting to have their new J cabin on the 777s and a DSC offer may just sway someone away from VA back to QF with a now-inferior product across the Pacific and to the Middle East. The DSC promotion travel period ends in April 2017. Guess what? VA should have all their 777s refurbished by September/October. People who could have potentially booked with VA have now booked on QF. Win for QF or VA.
From memory changes in the past meant any promotions were nullified if you made changes.I have a problem.
I booked return discount Y with DSC and now need to change one of my flights. Am I best to keep the existing booking and book one way Flex Y so I still get the SC I need?

It would appear that changes are permitted with current promotion. Think that was confirmed by Red Roo in this thread. Search for their posts.
From the website:
"...If you change or cancel your initial qualifying booking and/or travel is completed outside the promotional period, this bonus offer will not apply."
NB: There have been differing interpretations of this provision.
If I book Flex Y earning standard SCs then I would get the same SCs as booking discount Y with DSC so that would be O.K. so long as the return flight from the original booking still earns DSC if I don't fly the outbound leg.Do you mean that you would not use the original booking, for one of the legs?
If so, you will earn no SCs for that leg.
What would happen if I kept the existing booking but didn't fly the outbound flight but just the return flight and booked a separate outbound flight? Would that work?
I guess I will have to spend my time in the Brisbane J lounge discussing my options with the staff then.Nope. If you dont fly the outbound leg, the whole ticket will be cancelled.

I'm not too sure about this for domestic from recent experience. Booked a same day return, ended up not flying the outbound leg but was fine with the inbound. I had already checked in and had both boarding passes, maybe that helped but I didn't get the impression after speaking to a couple of Qantas staff before both the outbound and return flights that no show on the first leg was going to cancel the second for this booking and I specifically asked on both occasions as I was concerned about it.
If your flights are domestic maybe check in for both and call to say you have a problem and can't fly the first but will definitely make the second flight?
a free shadow I hadn't even requested.
Well I won't be a NB for quite a while now (if ever again) and don't usually fly J domestically. I now have PS status and that's before adding any DSCs.Do let us know how you go when you decide to request a shadow.

You should be fine. Domestic flights are a series one way flights. Either call them before hand to let them know or wait until day of travel. What would happen if I kept the existing booking but didn't fly the outbound flight but just the return flight and booked a separate outbound flight?
