Re: QF selling more "extra legroom" Y seats - 80A/K,71D & Dom. Exit

Emirates does not allow you to preselect exit or extra leg room seats at time of booking and are only released at time of check in at the airport. This is based on personal experience and confirmed by others on here.

The poster said they can get exit rows just for asking and thats what im talking about. EK do give them at checkin to anyone who asks if there is a seat available

The OP also said the following

I've pretty much moved to another airline where I still get to choose these seats for free (well the ones that actually do have extra leg room) when I book.

That was what I was referring to.

Re: QF selling more "extra legroom" Y seats - 80A/K,71D & Dom. Exit

So I will book Emirates to/from BKK/SIN everytime if I can pre-allocate bulkhead/exit rows.

I can't speak to EK but there is at least one airline that flys that route and allows bulkhead choice when booking with no status. But bulkheads across airlines are somewhat of a lottery IMHO - some good, some average, some terrible (ie most QFi).

The thread title is "QF selling more "extra legroom" Y seats - 80A/K,71D & Dom. Exit" so it was those seats I was primarily referring to. I have prealloacated the A380 trapdoor seat on on 4 occasions now for past/future flights on said airline. It's actually better than an exit row IMHO (as are 80A/K, albeit A380 configs other than QF don't always have those).

Re the longhaul exit rows, they are readily available for the asking on checkin with a number of airlines, including said airline (and EK it seems). Sure, not as good as the old days with QF where my height and preference were in my account and so got them pre-allocated on booking or phone call when available, with no status (subject to sighting me at checkin). Later on pre-QF-charging I had to wait until checkin but still got them most of the time. Early on post-charging QFi would still give them for free on checkin if no one had bought them, but now it's a case of "Yes we still have one ! ... that will be $90/$180 please".

Unfortunately QF pax are savvy travellers and via sites like this learnt to ask for these seats, which led to QF monitizing them, tall pax ergonomics be damned. :( If you want to still find such seats for free, look for airlines where you might expect less savvy tavellers, and managements not looking to reduce their Y experience to the LCC "we-would-charge-for-oxygen-if-we-could" model.

Yes, if not already allocated .. although of the four times I have done so, three times I was upgraded to business class (all on QF flight numbers).

Bulkhead is fine for me. It's not the legroom I need.

I can't think think of any legacy airlines that allow pre-selecting bulkhead/exit rows for someone without status on those routes. Not SQ. Not TG. Not QF. Not CX. Maybe MH but not going there. Maybe Etihad? I don't know.

Qantas saw a money making opportunity and went for it. I don't agree with that decision. For the first time for as long as I can remember I am looking to book airlines other than Qantas although not looking to move away from QFF. That would be suicide trying to prove a point.

Think purple for bulkheads. It's in your list.

MH and CX both allow bulkhead selection for non status pax.

TG? I didn't think so. Shame their cheap airfares don't earn on SQ KrisFlyer.

Well there you go. I didn't think you could do it with CX either.

So ~13,600 QFF points, 100 SCs and ~$100 cheaper or ~11,000 Asia miles but nothing toward status.

Some food for thought. Can you check available seats before paying?

CX allows advance seat selection for the following (pretty comprehensive):

The following customers can request a seat in advance

  • Members of The Marco Polo Club (Silver tier or above) and oneworld Ruby tier members or above
  • All First and Business Class passengers
  • Customers holding tickets on eligible fare types – Y, B, H, K, L, M, V, W, R, E
Customers requiring special services cannot request a seat online. Please raise your request at the time of booking.

Exit rows (as opposed to bulkheads) are available for pre-selection for OWR and above. free of charge.

Bulkheads are not designated 'extra legroom' even though the majority of them indeed offer a lot more space.

Went on line to select seats for a trip next Wednesday Syd -Per and the system wanted to charge me $60 for an exit row seat in row 23. Did I miss something about charging P1's or WP's for these seats now or is it a computer glitch?

This started a few months ago (can't remember exactly when). As a WP1 you can get them for free by calling QF.

They really should update the seat map PDFs as row 23 is not marked as an exit row...

I'm not sure what seat map you are looking at but on the 36J268Y and 36J265Y (colour issue here granted), row 23 is listed as an exit row.

The one that came up when I was looking at a particular flight...admittedly an international flight so maybe not relevant?

Row 23 isn't an exit row on all of the 332 configs, so that is why there is a difference between what you have seen and what the other member is seeing.

It's always been necessary to call and according to the QF blurb it seems it's only available on international flights.
Though it might simply be that they haven't updated this since they started charging for domestic.
