SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Well done tiz - so glad everything went so well for you. S$200 vouchers for the 'inconvenience'? Any wonder SQ top of the tree? And I am with you 100% on the daytime flt concept - not only R but F also - but alas that is not always achievable - I do 10 trips each year to China and my preferred flt is 218 out of MEL - 00:05 or 01:05 dep - means sleeping only and totally miss the R or F exp - such is life.

could I get a confirmation if it is possible to remove 1 out of 2 passengers from a redemption booking and that it costs USD$30?
The last time i cancelled a redemption booking it was USD$30 but I do not know if that is per passenger or per redemption booking because there was only 1 pax on that booking..

I wanted to thank everyone who's contributed intel to this thread. It's been a great and worthwhile read.
I've never pursued SQ previously as I had the impression that SQ reward redemptions were difficult without status. In fact, all the same principles apply as with other programs (e.g. Booking on seat release date).
Made my first SQ redemption for my wife and I some months ago for Maldives in September Suites SYD-SIN then J to MLE and managed to nab F on the 777 SIN-SYD with an overnight in SIN. I had been on waitlist for some months for one Suites seat on earlier flight but seemed hopelessly waitlisted for the other (my first experience was waitlist cleared after a day after seats released so didn't think it was going to happen).
I called SQ call Centre as suggested and found someone helpful who was able to release one more Suite for me on the earlier flight to SYD. I wouldn't have known to do that without the advice on this thread.
Long post, but just wanted to say thanks as the advice from this thread means we're now booked for our first Suites return trip and already planning our next to JFK. Previously only ever redeemed with VA and CX. You've helped me realize SQ is a viable first choice. Might have to step up my points earn activities, I have a feeling I'm not going to want to go back to J once I've flown Suites :)

Thankfully quite the opposite. Which I guess is to be expected.

SQ SYD-SIN is at least quadruple daily, MEL-SIN is quadruple daily. That's around 200-250 business class seats a day ex SYD and 200 a day from MEL. QF has how many? 28 from MEL and maybe 56 from SYD (double daily). Much more capacity on SQ. And same for F... sheer number of flights leads to fairly good options.

just info incase anyone else was wondering. It is possible to cancel just 1 out of 2 passengers from a redemption ticket for $30USD. Do note that it is $30USD per pax on cancellation of a redemption group tickets so even though you may have redeemed 4 pax on a single booking, to cancel the booking it would be $30USD per pax.

Don't know if this was common knowledge, saves a call..

Thanks for all the comments re: F and J thoughts for overnight flights. We are flying F in May, but booked J for night flights in November, I think we've made the right choice in not spending the extra points on F. I think???

Just some Book the Cook questions (in Suites).

Is the Japanese Meal, out of London the kyo kaiseki? I have a BTC option for Lunch, and then I have these options for Breakfast: BTC (Multigrain toast or Pad thai?), Dietary meals, religious, vegetarian, standard meal, or Japanese meal.

First is first. Business is business. If you have the points spend them on F, you won't be disappointed: bigger bed, better service, better food, better drinks, amenity kit, [usually] better lounges. And you still have a totally personalised experience. F gives you a quiet cabin (move past the second door on a 777 in business and the engine noise is noticeable).

There is only a limited window of service in both first and business class. There's nothing 'special' in F for the hours between meals. The service comes during meal times, and you still get that on an overnight flight.

If points are tight, business is a good alternative.

Never in my wildest (pre-AFF) dreams would I have thought I'd be debating whether we should go first or business!

Now I seem to have the dilemma of slumming it in J and having more flights than we currently know what to do with (but I'm sure we'll find somewhere to use them), or flit them away in first! I'm thinking suites once, just for the bragging rights) and then start planning plenty of holidays in J.

Good point about how quiet the F cabin is. Mrs didn't even realise we'd taken off when we departed Zurich in suites - she was genuinely shocked when she looked out the window and saw we were no longer on the ground.

Usually I've lost circulation on my arm as she grips so tightly (anxious flyer)... So this was a very welcome change.

Probably another stupid Q but do SQ offer upgrades (paid) at check-in at all?

SWMBO asked whether it was possible considering that I've upgraded us to J for the flight home from BNE to SYD (with 4hrs to kill after arriving in SYD at 6am from SIN, I thought we could at least have a sit-down and maybe a chance of shower in the VA lounge) by converting survey points to Velocity points. She was potentially interested in the upgrade from SIN-LHR or ZUR to SIN.

Just booked my first First with SQ (HND-SIN-SYD) in Sept - what is the recommendation with meals from Tokyo again? I recall that the kyo-kaiseki offering means it's worth not booking the cook on the ex-HND leg, but since the flight takes off at 9:15 is this a breakfast or a lunch flight?

I just wanted to give a big thank you to all the guys here who have put up so much useful info.

After reading over this tread plus the wiki and a few other parts of the SQ forum I have booked 3 seperate J trips for this year.

thanks again
