SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Just received advice from SQ that our a380 has been subbed with a 777 mid March next year. Am guessing we lost the lottery on the new Suites, dammit!

Do you mind me asking which of the flights that was?

Also, if you get in early enough, they might be willing to let you swap to the A380...

SQ335, mid March.

I thought about that, but all flights from Paris that week appear to have changed, so we'd need to change port... and these were booked under the old points system, so am relictant to jepordize them. And I've never flown SQ F!
We still have the Suites from Singapore to Melbourne, will be watching that closely!!

Try to get on a service to LHR, ZRH or FRA and make your own way to Paris (eg LHR then a BA flight or the train across the chunnel). Worth it if you can cope with the extra points... (bearing in mind a tax refund).

Ha, that's kinda what we're doing! Unfortunately our flight to LHR is in J, then we're training to Paris. We chose Paris over the other two ports originally for ease & proximity (ok, and cause I love Paris!) as we only have 2 weeks and we want to be in the UK for as long as possible. Points are at a premium, as I'm hoping to get back for Christmas.

Looks like we're in the 777 with only one row of F. Is it really such a downgrade from R? (I can't believe I'm writing that after my Dad sent me a pic of his very full LHR-SIN EK Y this morning... I don't mean to sound like a princess!!)

Unless the SIN-MEL leg also subs out, I reckon we'll be ok :-)

The new F in mini 4 Suite cabin is a fabulous F product - but it is still a big step down from R.

Edit: The mini 4 Suite F cabin feels so tiny compared to the 8 Suite cabin the first time you ride it - and the 2nd - and the 3rd ............

Have a March SQ335 flight from CDG as well under old points
Now subbed to 777
Maybe time to try to switch to my ideal flight in July 2018 when seats come up under the old points by arguing I want R seats back?

How were you informed? We are headed to CDG on 28 Jan next year and returning from CDG on 23 Feb. Haven't heard anything yet. My SO is constantly laughing about the fact that I actually look forward to the flights instead of the holiday.

EDIT: Oh bugger! Just logged in and our flight SIN - CDG and CDG - SIN have been subbed for the 777 as well.

Depends on a few things. Does the current ticket terminate in Adelaide? No other sectors back to SIN? If that's the case, it is possible to ditch the last sector. However... if your connection time in SIN is short, they may not let you short-check your bags. Secondly, there is a very small chance SQ will notice duplicate bookings and cancel one of them.
Thanks MEL yes it terminates in Adelaide, we are spending 4 days in SIN . We are flying in J from ADE to LGK booked a reward ticket through Virgin 6 days there then LGK to SIN (first of the multi ticket) for 5days then SIN to ADE booked with SQ, so I want to drop the SIN to ADE and go SIN to PER in J for a day, then back home to ADE.

First time flying J and first big retiming of points, made a few mistakes along the way but almost there and enjoyed the proces, so much learned from all on this site
thanks

Clive

Then there won't be a problem in terms of the practicalities of the actual flights themselves.

But if you have a frequent flyer number (particularly SQ's) attached to both bookings you'll run the risk of one of the bookings being cancelled. Most airlines have something in their terms and conditions about 'impossible' flights... duplicate bookings or other arrangements where it would be impossible to take both. People do this for a variety of reasons... flexibility for example. Or hedging bets with award availability. Airlines can cancel one (or more) of the bookings leaving you with just one option. They would usually ask which one you want, but not always. And the ticket to ADL may be the one they keep given it's part of a connecting ticket. It's a risk - the way to get rid of that risk is to cancel the seat you don't want. But there may be cancellation fees involved.

Have just under 24 hours in SIN before onward FRA - JFK F flights. (Arriving SIN 0020 and depart at 2355). So, a hotel for the previous night, but prefer not paying for 2 nights to cover me till 2100 check out.
What have others done / suggestions?

GMOH really depends on the budget. On a J trip back to Brisbane a few years ago from Milan we arrived around 5.45am and our flight to Brisbane was at midnight. As our luggage was checked through we were in the taxi just after 6.00am and had thoughts of staying at a certain hotel in Bugis area and taxi driver advised against it and suggested Ibis Bencoolen. Glad he did. Arrived there around 6.45am and no problems checking in for 1 night and not 2. All we wanted was a bed to sleep for 5 hours or so and then come back to the room throughout the day as needed.

The Ibis Bencoolen was perfect for that and beds extremely comfortable. Room quiet and on the small side but only used it to sleep. Best part was that with my Accor discount was only around $110 a night.

No where as the same level as the Crowne Plaza but if you need to book 2 nights cost should not be anymore than $240. Have seen it on Accor sale (the 40% one) at around $90 a night with breakfast.

i received a very polite email saying that my seat selection had changed. My initial fear was that I had lost our row 11 / bulkhead seats for the J trip outbound!

I should check my emails. I was surprised with SOs reaction when I told here that we were not going to be flying A380s SIN - CDG and CDG - SIN. She thought we were down J from Suites - It looks to be single row F.

After a discussion including switching across to a ZUR - SIN - SYD flight on the Sunday instead of the Friday (this was the original plan but all the seats disappeared during the points debacle few months back) we decided to stick it out since it would mean that we would arrive in SIN on Saturday and we can duck out for a day out with my brother and his family (including new Bub who arrived earlier this month). Ohhhh...the call of that whiskey bar in the Senator lounge.

I too have had my A380 SIN-CDG subbed to the 777-300ER. But it is the new F so happy to give it a try. MEL-SIN is still the Airbus.

My flight is on New Year's Day so it looks like the A380 is off the CDG run for a while. Perhaps that route drew the short straw to free up an A380 to start the refurb process?

Thanks moffat. Yes, have stayed at Ibis Bencoolen before and found it good as you describe and well located. Though I'm not sure I'd get away with an early check at 1am. I'll keep an eye out for a sale cos that would be cost effective.

CP at the airport offered a 2 pm check out and then later access to the pool deck to shower before onwards flights and the TPR. I could shower at the TPR, it would be more convenient with a hair dryer etc.

The Crowne Plaza is very convenient to the T3 and the TPR. We seem to be getting nicer rooms and we take 600 IHG points in place of drinks.
Today I received an offer to buy points with a 100% bonus from IHG. Those points are handy if you need to have a room at Circular Quay in Sydney.

Circular Quay would be lovely. CP at SIN a/port offers an early check of 0800 (not before), for a day rate for max 8 hours at, "approx 50% off" he said.

dunno if much help... I googled 'Singapore hotels with 24-hour check-in'... some of the threads returned trip advisor posts/discussion of hotels allowing checkin anytime in a 24 hour period. Some were a bit old though. might be worth exploring if you know where (area) you want to stay.

My flights to CDG are still on the A380 in late October, but the return flight home a week later has been subbed to a 777. Lost my row 18 bulkheads as a result (insert sad emoticon here)!
