The totally off-topic thread

I had the same problem with an unlisted number. I explained the number was on a 'do not call list' and they asked me to read out the number to them... claiming their computer systems randomly generated phone numbers all day and they couldn't see who they were calling....

Well the thing is they are only speaking in Chinese and when I say something they keep speaking more Chinese. Can't get a word in!

You answer with "hang on a minute" and leave them "on hold" until they give up (ie. costing them time and money).

It just worries me that somehow I might end up paying for their call in the funny world of Optus land.

Not as unlikely as you think.

Since China took hold of HK, the prevalence of Mandarin has increased quite a bit. Of course, since not all the population has been "replaced" since the hand back, many people can and still speak Cantonese. But the younger ones and those in business are likely expected to adopt Mandarin as a lingua franca.

"Ni Hao Ma" is Mandarin; in Cantonese it would be "Nei Hou Mou" (or however you would Romanise that...)

Cantonese = (phonetically) "Nay Ho Ma?" = literally "You good?" (the Ma being the question mark, and the phrase said in the tone of a question).

Hopefully you will sort out whatever it is. Take care.
No, not with me. I am fine. Or at least I think I am fine. ;)

It was more a statement to do with the recent discussion on this thread. First Angelina Jolie and now this man.

When it comes to life is there such a thing as inevitable? How far would you go trying to avoid it?

Sometimes when things go south, they end up going north.

Flew QF BNExSYDxMEL today and due to a tight connection my luggage didnt make it to my MEL flight, when I landed in MEL I turned on my phone and had a SMS from QF saying my bag didn't make it, but we will deliver it. saw the ladies at luggage services, they organised to deliver it home, and hey presto all sorted. No standing around waiting thinking will my bag ever come off.

Bag delivered a few hours later, all peachy keen.

Proactive customer service at its best - I wonder what the same experience would have been like with a LCC - Jetstar/Tiger?

Could be a nice little side benefit no luggage line up just get a SMS and your bag is delivered to where you are.

Could be good but also really bad.
