Whingepool type question:
Does anyone own one of those super duper Japanese or Korean brand rice cookers (Tiger/ Cuckoo/Zojirushi) and if so are they worth spending $400 on?
We have only ever bought cheap Breville things, eat rice 2-3 times per week at least and getting fed up of replacing them.

Nope. But rice cookers are only $40 or so aren't they? So you would need to replace 10 to make it worthwhile. And rice is hardly difficult to cook so I do wonder what is so snazzy about the more expensive ones. Granted some do have steam vegetables and fish etc type trays and a myriad of settings to boot... But I still doubt the overall value.

What are you cooking in the rice cooker? Shrek's grubs?

We've only replaced one in several years. Just the cheapies.

I usually just cook rice in the microwave. :)

We only bring out the rice cookers if we have to cook more than three cups of rice, which feeds quite a few people; viz. the rice cooker only usually comes out at parties.

That said, no way my folks will splash out on a few hundred dollar rice cooker so I take it ours is cheap. Does the job in my experience.

I purchased a Toshiba

Cost me about $195 from H Norman. Best thing ever and worth every cent. Don't let Mrs Buzzard anywhere near it. Sure beats the cheapies previously owned.

My $20 Sunbeam does the job. We've also got an old one, could swear it was a Breville, must be a good 10+ years and still going strong.

We must be pretty hard core on our appliances I think
I'm going to have a scout around for a better model than we have so thanks for the input folks.
On Topic I've just heard there is the possibility of going to Kununurra for a short spell next year and trying to figure out the most advantageous route to get there :D

I got one of those - fantastic piece of equipment.

Model No RC-18LMI(WT)L had it for around 6 years - hasn't missed a beat. We'd use it around twice a week.

I met somebody in the Perth QP yesterday who has 28,000 SC's! I forgot to ask if he was a member of AFF...

They generally do more than just plain rice too, such as congee and a few other things. Guess it depends how much you make at a time, too.

But friends with the expensive ones swear by them. I have a cheapie for my 1-2 cups a week...

Well if you want to blow the budget get a Miele steam oven makes really good rice & kedgeree which is my absolute favourite :)

We also use them for when we have Chinese hot pot (or more colloquially called 'steam boat'); we use rice cookers to keep the stock soup hot.

That moment when you listen to a recording you made back in February in NYC on a subway train & you can picture that one person based on what they said.
