Is it totally acceptable for someone to incite discrimination, hatred or violence based on their non-religious beliefs?

Religious beliefs are baseless? So the universe is 14 billion years old. The earth is 4 billion years old. There is evidence of life on earth as far back as 3.5 billion years ago. These beliefs are not baseless? Science is able to make accurate predictions even though no one was around? Who would question science, right? Scientists are very smart people? Theologians are biased, irrational and dumb?

Believe what you like. But just because you believe it does not make it right. Far from it....

1) the bit you quote does not include the word religion.

2) scientists now at this point in time can measure things like the half life of radioactive carbon-14. They can measure the amount of radioactive carbon-14 contained in living carbon based life forms - now! They can also measure the amount of radioactive carbon-14 in fossils and other no longer living but were living once things - now! They know much carbon-14 was in the life form when it died, they know how much is in it now and they know the rate of decay. It's then a very simple calculation to find out how long it's been dead. There are many natural occurring radioactive isotopes that allow this type of investigate.

Carbon-14 dating tells us the world is much older than 6000 years, which is the belief of some religious types.

the point of my comment was not to say all beliefs are baseless.. but some of them are, and it is often more damaging when a baseless belief is used to discriminate or incite hatred.

we know, for example, that homosexuality is not a disease or something to be ashamed of. anyone that continues to believe that, and discriminate on that basis, needs to be corrected. those beliefs are baseless... and made worse that despite all the scientific evidence to the contrary, people still hold on to them and in some cases cause untold harm (gay youth suicide is a major issue).

anyone that advocates that men somehow 'own' women, or have the right to control them needs to have their beliefs corrected.

and the list goes on.

for the majority of circumstances, beliefs driven people exercise those beliefs for good. but when they don't, and they refuse to accept evidence based arguments to the contrary, it can become a problem.

You keep believing that Carbon-14 dating behaves exactly the same way over 4 billion years and through all catastrophic events. After all we have recorded history as a reference point going back more than 6,000 years to verify these findings.

By the way I am not as religious as you think. I just dont believe all fairytales I am told including the ones from scientists. Dont tell me this rock is 4 billion years old and expect me to believe you. I want you to prove to me it is 4 billion years old. But you cant other than through the use of meaningless formulas.

There is anticipated to be a severe argument ahead based on religion vs science.

Thank you.

Just onboard Dawn Princess in Sydney for four nights.

The cruise before us had an emergency and passengers called to the lifeboats with their jackets. They put the fire out quickly though. Lots of media at the Port (Sydney). ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1384487930.985568.jpg

Friday afternoon and JohnK must be on my flight to HBA.

Departure time has been and gone. We aren't even on board. No announcements. FAs standing at scanners but no sign of boarding.

There's a couple of lost property auctions coming up in Sydney (Pickles, Milperra) which you might be interested in. People leave behind so many things!

Saturday 16/11 - Sydney Airport
Saturday 7/12 - Sydney Trains

I have just received an SMS my flight has been re-scheduled 55 minutes later!

Happy to report my train into work is on time and enroute and tube looks to be free of delays... For now. ;)

Interesting fact i just discovered.

The first female train driver for Tokyo Metro to be appointed since WWII was in March 2002.

Blood mongrel cat. Just had to rescue a young, not really able to fly, bird from the stupid thing. A small yellow and black bird of the type that goes after the pollen and such. Not the dirty filthy mongrel pigeons that leave their waste all over our outdoor entertaining area. Not the filthy pigeons that the stupid cat watches eating all her food! But I nice, relatively harmless bird.

That's it, the cat is getting a bath!

I got better things to do, like wash the cat to within an inch of its life.

Besides, how would it be possible to explain that the strong and weak nuclear forces do not change over time to someone who can't accept that a coin toss really is random, (and probability can demonstrate that it's random).

Time for another G&T, to warm up for cat washing….
