for the majority of circumstances, beliefs driven people exercise those beliefs for good. but when they don't, and they refuse to accept evidence based arguments to the contrary, it can become a problem.
Sorry but everyone has some sort of belief.

Evidence based? Is that like singlet, shorts and thongs should be an acceptable form of dress standard? Or men and women are equal. Men and women are not equal. They never will be equal. Far from it. But that does not mean that it is OK for men to mistreat women.

A couple of things about your points.

There are many good religious people. Don't include the fundamentalists as there are fundamentalist non religious people as well. And some just like to use religion as an excuse for their own benefit such as the Crusades, Spanish inquisiiton. There was not a religious bone in their bodies.

And religion does not need to adapt to accept what some people think should be acceptable today. I like it that my religion has not changed for over 2 thousand years. And I will only continue to support my religion on the proviso that it does not change.

men and women are equal in that they should enjoy the same rights.

my comments need to be read in context. I am only saying beliefs driven people can be dangerous when they use their beliefs to incite discrimination.

I'm not addressing the many outstanding beliefs driven people in this world who strive to make it a better place. That it not what this discussion is about :)

And yes sometimes religion or cultural beliefs do need to change and move with the times. It is unacceptable for any religion or cultural belief to make anyone feel bad about something over which they may have no control, or to encourage acts which endanger children or the vulnerable.

I went there once for a date.

Fortunately things didn't work out, I think I dodged a bullet with her..

I've been there a few times, taken the kids. I think the first time there a car caught on fire down the back. ;)

It hasn't changed? Really? So your religion still thinks the universe circles around the earth? Your religion still requires adulterous women to be stoned? I could go on but won't bother, this opinion is just too funny.

Clearly you know nothing about your religion or you're deluded.

I've spent the last hour or so watching a Japanese (I think) TV channel on Foxtel & improving my Japanese via an app.

I think this phrase will get a workout in February.

You off to Nippon? Without consulting my notes (and even with consulting my notes), my Japanese is extremely limited, but for first-time introductions this is useful:

Hajime Mashate! Watashi-wa <insert name here>-des.

Only for first time intros, and means (approximately) "Hello, pleased to meet you, my name is <insert name>"

Enjoy your trip (assuming that is the case), Japan is a great place to visit.

Only correction I'll make is that it should be hajimemashite ;) (desu also, but it's pronounced 'des' to an English person!)

Yes, knew I was on mildly shaky ground with the spelling, always happy to be corrected as I am pretty cough on these things myself. ;)

With the World Cup in 2014 getting closer my eldest son is learning Portugese. He brushed up on Japanese to attend the cup qualifier in Japan.
He will need a Citibank plus debit card and a Visa to get into Brazil and so far both sons don't have any Australian game tickets in the draw so they intend doing some trades to get the games they want.

Neighbours are having a garage sale at 9 AM, with all the advertising saying no early arrivals please, have seen thirty odd cars ignore that request with an hour to go, first was at 6!
