The totally off-topic thread

My father spent many years in Nanjing, and I spent some time there as a young lad also... The small street his apartment overlooked in 1997-1998 is now a 6 lane dual carriageway (3 lanes each way). The noodle man with a pushcart has upgraded to a small premise on the ground floor of a mixed use medium rise tower (right next to a travel agency). The "new" bridge is now the "old" bridge, and there is a "new new" bridge.

There is a photo of me somewhere in one of the museums. Let me see if I can dig it up (well photo of the photo of me in the museum).

I haven't been back for years, and I really should... If I recall correctly, the Howard Johnson Hotel used to have a good bar? But this was years ago... I probably wouldn't recognise the place now.

I don't know of any Howard Johnsons in NKG at all now.
I've only been coming up here for about 6 years and certainly seen plenty of changes in that short time.
If anyone is coming to NKG let me know - Happy to organise an NKG drinks night.:)

I was given 2 Xmas cards on the weekend. One had a personal comment inside which was nice. The other had simply my name & the name of the person who gave it to me.

I don't do Xmas cards.

I don't send Christmas cards either. My SIL on the other hand does. They get draped all over the house. Gives her pleasure I suppose.

So sick of power blackouts in Adelaide this week. This is our fourth. Just went into the gym and there's another one. Going to be out until 5pm. So much for trying to pre-empt Christmas Day lunch. :(

What is with the blackouts in Adelaide?

Is it to do with insufficient power infrastructure, very high heat causing overloads on infrastructure, or very high heat impacting on the power generating equipment?

How long has this "tradition" been going on for? Surely if it is long enough, someone's heads should've been cracked open by now (or the people should've gotten sick of it, if some of them haven't unfortunately died from heat stroke).

Put it this way, a friend of mine from Energy Australia upon seeing our power poles (called stobie poles) asked which museum we got them from.

It's a saga. Old infrastructure in both poles and water pipes. Our electricity bills were supposed to cover the cost of maintenance but at the moment all they do is emergency fixes. The weather today is very benign and not a breathe of wind so no excuses today.

One suburb in Adelaide was without water for several days during the heat wave. They'd fix one pipe and it would rupture the next weak point.

We had four water outages in a month. Old pipes again. We had new bitumen laid down three months ago and there are already cracks along the same water pipe line.

At least you got new bitumen.
My road is only 4km long and after redoing less than half of it the money ran out so very old bitumen on my bit.

They had no choice. It was dug up for new paving. We had SA Water outlets that were raised 5cms above the road surface. Of course they ran out of money during the paving and had to wait for a new financial year to finish it. Gotta love Burnside Council planning.

Old infrastructure IIRC.

There was a greater number of deaths reported during an ADL heatwave in 2008. ISTR the coroner mentioned holding an inquest into these deaths and whether people were avoiding using a/c due to the price of electricity. I can't recall the final outcome.

Let a golden opportunity slip today.

Even par on front nine at Muirfield (25 points) and then collapsed on back nine to finish with 39 points.

Look, I get some people want to take today and tomorrow off... However if you are scheduled to work today, to get people into work... And you don't show up, cancelling the train as a result you inconvenience those of us who do need to work!

That is all.

Woohoo! Paypal ruled in my favour over some tickets I had previous sent!

That's nuts.... of course they may have just "chuck a sickie" (not sure how that act goes down in Old Blighty), but pretty damn bad form.

Of course, if we delved into the mind of those who didn't turn up, the words "Kiss my <expletive term>" may be able to be found in their mind.

The last theory is that said people who should've turned up for work have also been delayed for whatever reason to get to work. Weather being a PITA there?

So what does this exactly mean? You get to keep your money or you have a bit of legal backing if the accusing party files a chargeback / decides to get litigious on your hide?

Not right now. We have been pre-warned of delays tonight though due to weather. Hopefully it all happens while I'm playing Mrs Flashback in a few games of squash ;)

Yep. When I last looked today and tomorrow are normal work days. I certainly am.

Told ya the seller sometimes wins. :). Noice.

It means he gets to keep his money he received for selling the tickets.

Yep I get to keep the money!
The buyer can only try to do a chargeback against paypal.
But as far as I am concerned I feel that Paypal must have seen that there was enough evidence on my side to conclude the tickets arrived at there destination and perhaps the buyer had a previous history of frivolous claims!

But I like this statement by Paypal for this claim below.
