The totally off-topic thread

Not sure about the look of the new website. It will take a while to get used to the new design.

My thoughts too. IMHO it has a bot of a retro look. Like some of the boards I was using at the turn of the century :)

(if 9 years ago is retro!)

As someone who eschewed any boards of this (or any) type till ~2005 I haven't seen this look before and quite like it!

I agree about the retro look. I'll reserve judgement about whether I like it or not until a later date. ;)

And another question what is the furthest you have rung someone to get instructions or suggestions on how to cook something. My flatmate just phoned her mum in the UK to get instructions on how to cook a roast. I hope it tastes good.
Depends on how far I am away from my mother. When both mum and dad were away in Greece in 1988 I used to call her at least every few days to get instructions on washing, cooking, ironing etc.

I called her in Sydney earlier this evening to ask how to make lentil soup. The soup turned OK as I am still alive (), it tasted good and have enough leftover for tomorrow. As hard as I try my cooking in nowhere near as good as my mother's cooking....

Ah, the joys of cheap international phone calls.

Just on that, does anyone here routinely use Voice over IP (VoIP) for some or all of their calls?

I use Engin (Engin - Your VoIP Phone Company - Australia's Leading Broadband Phone Provider) which was recommended to me by Dave Noble. Pretty good deal. I'm paying for their Home Plus package which gets me either free calls or a flat 20c rate to all countries that I need to call. Plus free Australia-wide calls other than 13 numbers. I've never paid more than $30 a month.

Yes, we have a naked ADSL package through Exetel, included in that is a VOIP package including 30 free local/national calls, and international calls starting at 0.5c/min.

Never had a phone bill over $9.

Very OT, but this is the OT thread. How do you get a naked ADSL package :?: I've heard of them but never seen one.

Naked ADSL is just a company providing you with ADSL without a standard phone service. It used to be that to have ADSL you had to have a standard phone service - but now you can skip paying the line rental on your home phone and just get the ADSL. Many companies now do Naked ADSL, and some (like iiNet) also provide you with a free replacement for your home phone that does Voice over IP (routes your calls over your ADSL so you still have your home number that people can call you on - and your calls to landlines around Australia are free, too.

Ah, very good. I'm using two - Pennytel as a primary company, and I always keep a backup with MyNetFone. Never paid more than $9/month here - $5/month with 8c untimed calls to 70 countries, and the first 80 calls are free.

I've also managed to cut my mobile bill by using their PennySIM too - it's like a calling card - it dials a free access number and then routes the call and you only pay the VoIP rates - but it uses voice calls (not data) from your mobile.

The intriguing thing, once you have VoIP, do you find that you try to find direct replacements for 13/1300 numbers? Like calling QANTAS direct on their (03) number, not their 13 numbers.

Seems one one to appeal to the male rather than to the female demographic!

Considering the Virgin brand, I am not surprised.

I wonder how this will go down with consumer groups.......I can hear the howls of the family groups, I think, particularly as this airline was supposed to appeal to them (i.e. cheaper than QF)...

Skype is good - spoke to friends in London last night - 30mins used 5MB.

I'd have to agree with beardoc...but it doesn't make me want to choose V Australia, because the FA's on board won't be treating you like that!! A pipe dream, nothing more...

Public Holiday here in WA today..

nice and relaxing, weather is 27 and fine and I'm having some nice gelato.

Life is pretty good, people!

Haven't found such a replacement for taxi companies so far, they're all 13s. :(
