As to you 2 you need to get on facebook and keep up with the latest news. ;)

Hmmm, I am, in spite of myself, a fairly recent signing to facebook (I was invited; how could I refuse?), and I just looked at the AFF group but still none the wiser! I guess I'll learn how to drive it sooner or later.

I'm now on leave until 1st April so I really don't care either way. ;)
Yes but everyday proclaimed a public holiday potentially extends your leave past April 1, 2010 and then you would have accumulated some more annual leave whilst being on leave....

And what is so special about Facebook?

Actually that is another interesting one that I'm not sure I am able to easily explain in writing.

Suffice to say that my leave has accounted for onward accumulation.

Ok; one down one to go. :p

So you've retired by going on leave! Sort of the Claytons retirement.

I thought the same thing... am I missing something with it's functionality?

It's basically Facebook's wall without steroi_s.

And you can subscribe to it (via RSS), if you so desire tracking serfty's schedule and whatever serfty is doing.

Did anyone see the new V Australia advert on Channel 7 last night.

http://www.youtube.com/flyvaustralia

Was having a chat with some friends today about this ad (they'd seen it and remembered it).

One view was that the ad was aimed at a subset of late 20's, 30's fashion and career focussed women (maybe Sex in the city type), me me me focused and that the world revolves around them. (not really a target audience of Qantas Business advertising normally)

Another view was that it was aimed at young men and played on sex appeal. (again not really normal Qantas Business advertising target, but a common Virgin theme of ad)

And another view indicated that it was young, hip, nightclub type of atmosphere and was targeting 20's-30's men and women. (again, not a Qantas target).

I'm interested in what people think - Do any of the above match your perceptions of the ad's target? All three?

Another (perhaps better) example is Hilton Hotels vs. W Hotels. Whilst both have rather distinct non-overlapping target demographics, the common market which they are competing is still there, yet their images and advertising projects extremely different personalities. (Of course, Hilton is trying to "combat" this via their touted "Denizen" brand, which is currently shot to pieces thanks to a Starwood suit.)

I never really thought of it in those ways, but the main theme that fundamentally stuck out for me was Virgin's usual marketing tack of being different - really different. And fun.

Qantas is a prime target for this kind of contrast because their ads (if there are any on TV let alone on the internet video stream) are all about the traditional pillars of good, solid () service. For the older generation this works fine, but for the newer generation this kind of approach is pretty sterile.

If anyone in QLD compares the advertising of UQ and QUT, that kind of draws a pseudo-parallel. Oddly enough, UQ had "realised" its traditionalist image wasn't going to guide itself well through a newer market, so it had the initiative some time ago to devise new marketing devices to reposition itself.
