A friend of mine wants to know if they use face recognition software in NSW speed cameras.

And he also has an ethical question for the civil libertarians. If they don't have face recognition is it wrong to nominate a person who doesn't drive often as the culprit?

My friend would greatly appreciate any advice.

If the face is visible, then they can always use facial recognition software later. For example in Victoria, the Police already use the drivers license database to catch people. Oh and the picture doesn't even have to be that sharp to catch people.

My understanding of the mbs rules is that (and I may be wrong, as I'm not a private specialist) if you have a new referral after 12 months then they can charge a new pt item number.

But if your condition is permanent/ongoing/chronic and will require specialist visits for an ongoing period, you can ask your GP for an enduring/indefinite referral.

Yep. 12 months and I did have to get a new referral. I have tried the enduring referral - fail!

But the letter from the specialist specifically stated the policy on charging an initial versus second consultant fee was 18 months. So he could charge a higher fee but published policy is to not do so.

Might be viewed as perverting the course of justice.

The owner of the car needs to honestly notify who was driving, to the best of their ability. If they do so and nominate someone who isn't dead, I doubt the roads department will look at facial recognition

He is not sure who was driving at the time. That's why he wants to know if they use facial recognition or not.

Aaahh - that makes it clearer. I must admit I was surprised that you were implying doing something dodgy.

In this circumstance, I would phone the police and ask what to do when it does not seem possible to identify the person.

My brother is a police officer in WA and very experienced in traffic matters. I just asked him about here. Facial recognition, as such, is not used.

Ultimately the onus is on the owner to say who was driving. If they cant', they will cop the penalty. In the case of a fleet car, where the driver cannot be identified, the infringement may lapse for lack of proof of driver. Of course, NSW may differ on owner onus.

Generally in the case of corporate vehicles where the driver can't be identified a much higher financial penalty is given to the corporation but no points (obviously)

If the camera is fixed and shoots from behind it is unlikely to capture a face. If it is a mobile camera, then likely to take front on photo. You can download the photo from NSW RMS to have a look. Not sure about other states.

The clarity, of the 4 generations past said Judge, is awesome!

Face recognition doesnt work for me. They use it on cruise ships. They usually tell me my face has changed! Hmm.

If you are unable to nominate the driver then the owner of the car has to stump up and wear the demerit points, unless you are on a business arrangement.

Ripper thunderstorm in Melbourne just now - although it might be over quite quickly it was quite tropical in spectacularity (?)

We just had that in BNE - dark clouds started coming up from the south around 3:45pm and thunder/lightning hit about 4:45pm.

Two of us were in a meeting with a female BDM. One lightning strike lit up our meeting room and I instinctively ducked as the thunde followed within a second. She swore (I thought the same word, just didn't get it out).

Walked her to her car in the rain and saw one of the lightning bolts hit a crane here in Fortitude Valley. All over by 5:15

Whenever lightning gets close, I get a tinny taste in my mouth - was knocked down by a bolt about 8 years ago (a group of us were in the back yard of a friends house having a BBQ when one struck the house next door).

An example of the holding patterns:

Not dodgy. I sneakily threw one in for the civil libertarians.

It is not always as clear cut as some people may think. Try remember what was happening 3-4 weeks ago at a specific point in time. Almost impossible.

I received a camera fine in the mail last year. Apparently I was speeding in a school zone on Sydney's upper North Shore. Fortunately for me as it was a Thursday and knew that I was safely at work 150K north of there it was easy to name the driver. Unfortunately for my daughter on her red P's she was named and lost her licence for 3 months. She drives much more slowly now.

Hopefully your friend can remember who was driving as he/she will need to name someone.

Was just talking to Simo, seems that the storm is now hitting Maleny

I remember you posting that story back then. Poor kid.

They can't remember which one of them was driving at the time. Let them decide which one takes the blame.

If you'd like I can offer the services of MrJulesmac - I can guarantee you he will be able to identify who was driving the car.......Nothing funnier than watching him at the traffic camera office with a blooming magnifying glass (provided for just the purpose!) determined to prove that I was driving the car not him.He had the photo blown up and was trying to prove it was the sun shining on a blonde head (mine) and not on a bald shiny head (his). Hehe I won.
Incidentally we got a fine of about $3,000 the other day for a traffic offence; as the car is owned by our family company and not an individual they chuck you a monster fine until a designated driver is notified. This time, alas, I was driving.

I got a speeding fine passed on to me the other day, as the car was in my name at the time (and I was driving). Just shy of $3000 if the driver is not nominated, or about $300 if nominated. It is to stop the rorting that occurred where people would book the fines up to the company and not take any demerit points.

FWIW, I was high-tailing it to an incident, so the fine has been waived.
