I've dragged myself upto the [-]observation[/-] smoking deck at IST. No Qantas 747 to be seen. But limited view. Did see one of those private global star jet thingys land. Thought it might have been dear leader.

The QF charter flight was to SAW, not IST.

In retrospect yes but you wouldn't catch me camping in a million years so the chances of said equipment being used would be remote.
PF you would be pleased to know it is 16c this evening in ABZ, teenagers are out spending money in Union Square (Wagamama) the electricity is working, and there are no flood waters present. No hessian in view. Best wishes. John.

Even now when you are 'caught out' for some days, you would still not consider having one ?

Or, would you change your mind now ?

I don't have one preferring to continue the assumption that someone will fix the lines for me within hours.

But if I were caught out once - touch wood - I may lean towards having a spare generator - just in case.

No I don't think so. My assumption was the same as yours regarding fixing power outages. Assuming my home will again be in a Local Council disaster area is a pretty remote possibility I think.
I'll stick to spending that cash on escaping.

Like Princess Fiona, I am will without power. These things happen so infrequently that the purchase of a generator really has to b thought out, it could b another 5 years before it was needed. Same goes for getting a fire pump.
I am running out of candles though....

Depends on the storm & can I get out? I was flooded in for 2 days, so by the time I can get to a shop they would b all gone.

Your computer / smartphone seems to have a lot of juice to keep posting here. It also seems communication networks are relatively unscathed, too. Unless there is another way...

Too bad it's not like the days here; the sun is just setting at 9pm each day here. Would almost eliminate the need for candles.

When the lights go out in our place, the first thought (after thinking about the refrigerator) is how long will all the devices last on their current charge of battery, then pretty much sleeping. Oh yeah, and seeing which books (yes, remember those?) are in the house that are worth reading.

We used to (and still do) get quite a few power outages a year back on the farm, so when we redid the house wiring we had them wire it so we could plug generator straight into house to power necessities.

4 plugs... One for fridge freezer etc. One for hot water and water pump. Then kitchen. And the most important... TV, router, and accessories.

You'd just decide what required to be run and change plug over.

I have been sitting in my car with it running to charge my phone twice a day while I was flooded in.
Now at work, and have a generator here (the office MUST keep active !! ) so have kept my phone topped up during the day, and of course right now on the office computer.
I had no land line or signal for 2 days, which made my husband nervous, (he was in Victoria) not knowing how I was coping on my own.
When we built our home 22 years ago, we factored in gravity feed water, so I have running water, and still just enough hot water for a shower. Perhaps we should have put the gas on (bottled) but when on a budget, you have to decide what HAS to get done (it cost $20,000.00 as it was to get the power connected)
There are others worse off than me, and they live in suburbia.

We got a generator a few years ago after a hot spell in Melbourne where there were 4 days in a row with temperatures over 40 degrees. We lost power late in the third day and bought the generator on the 4th day. We used it to keep the fridge/freezer going. We lost a little bit of red meat from the freezer but everything else survived, apart from the ice cream which we ate during the hot spell. We have the computers on a UPS system which gives them enough time to safely shut down once the power goes out. We can also plug a lamp or another small electrical appliance into the UPS if we need light in the computer room for a short time.

You seem like a formidable woman. Why should he be nervous? :)

LOL, my parents raised me to be independent, strong with common sense.
Yes, I am the person you want around in an emergency, but if there is a male around that wants to take the lead, I am happy to follow (so long as he is going in the right direction) My husband is an old fashioned country boy, and he felt he should have been there to protect me. From what - I dont know, I shoot better than he does.

You are in Switzerland at the moment? then you would know of Dignitas?
I made all the arrangements for a friend to use their services, and held his hand until the end - I am that strong - when I have to be.

I am considering getting a power bank for them times when I need to charge things when power is not available. I wonder if power banks can be taken on board?

Did exactly the same as you with charging in the car. Power at work and a new Mophie Powerstation have kept me going.
I'm totally fed up at home now though and running out of clothes and towels. No landline, no water pressure as of this morning. I've booked myself and kids into a serviced apartment tonight for some sanity. Hopefully the power will be restored some time over the weekend.
Very grateful to all those leaving their families and working through the day and night to help get things back to normal.

This office is driving me crazy. There are a few blokes that seem to need to wander around when talking on their mobiles. And there's a lady who has some obsession with popping bubble wrap.

We might need you around at a future AFF function in the Hunter Valley then :D ;).

Watched a number of their videos and completely believe in the service. Life is a choice...
