Adelaide V Geelong game cancelled. Splitting the points between them.

Great decision by the AFL.

Cancelling the game is appropriate but I don't see how they can think that splitting the points between the clubs is fair. Maybe give them both 4 points if the game can't be rescheduled. Either the Crows or Cats are almost certainly going to miss out on 2 points they are entitled to which might be critical at the end of the season in deciding who plays finals.

Can't say I'm really surprised though given the AFL's poor record when it comes to thinking things through.

You obviously thought Geelong was going to win this one. As a non supporter of either team in this game, my tip would have been Adelaide (events of today aside). This was always going to be a tough game to pick.

Many discussions in the office today and the general consensus was to do exactly what the AFL has done in this round.

Giving both teams 4 points is a disadvantage to all the other teams hoping for a final 8 spot, not just the 2 (directly) involved.

So, Geelong may be in front by 2 points or they may be behind by 2 points. Guess we'll never know. All things considered in this tragic situation, I think it fair.

Actually I don't expect Geelong to win any particular game at the moment given the way they have been playing, robd. I can understand how people might assume that, given my obvious allegiances, my comments were based on self interest, however that is not the case. I have already resigned myself to the fact that the rest of this season is just a stepping stone to 2016.

We will probably have to agree to disagree about how the 2 points or 4 points options affect some clubs more than others but I don't think it's accurate to suggest all the other teams are disadvantaged - surely the only teams which might be advantaged/disadvantaged are those within 2 points of both the Crows and Geelong at the end of the season. Obviously the clubs at both the top and bottom of the ladder won't be impacted at all.

Here's a novel idea........why not just declare that no clubs will receive any points for this round?

Ideally, the round would have been pushed back a week. If this had happened a couple of weeks ago, maybe the AFL could have re-scheduled with the mid season split round?

Agree, not all the other teams will be impacted, but have a look at the ladder as it stands today. 4 points to both team affects (at this point in the season) 7 other teams, notwithstanding the results for the rest of the season.

There would be no point playing any games this week if no points are received. Why would any team risk injury by playing at all?

Pretty sure neither the Crows or Geelong are even the remotest bit concerned about points right now.

Yes, I'm sure that you are correct, Pushka, and being so "close to home" I'm sure it has rocked Adelaide-ites like yourself more than anyone else right now, irrespective of whether they are football followers or not. But the true test of leadership is when decisions have to be made under difficulty despite the raw emotions of the present. That's the AFL's job and when the rawness of the present has passed their decisions will be judged according to where the dice lands at the end of the home and away rounds.

Surely they could (and I'm sure would) play the round out of respect for Phil Walsh and as a tribute to his contribution to the game. As it is I can foresee that players who knew Phil personally will have their focus on their respective matches affected. If you take away the pressure of winning match points you surely highlight the collegiate spirit of the game.

It really is just a very sad and tragic situation. I'm sure every player/team would rather hand back 4 points if they could change what happened. My scarf is hanging out.

I think that had not a game been played last night to start the round, the whole round may have been cancelled or moved to the end of the fixture (sensible as too many airline and hotel bookings to change otherwise).
Whilst the public may have been onside with a round cancellation, the money (TV and sponsors) probably decreed otherwise.

Geelong isn't going to finish top 4.

Then 2 extra points won't probably matter if Geelong finishes 5-8.
Why is the TOT full of footy stuff. Have absolutely no interest. Sorry.

Can we have a footy thread please to release the Krakens on their own field?

I have no interest in AFL, Rugby league or Rugby Union. So for me, off-topic is the perfect description for it.
