@penegal sorry to hear you are feeling poorly mate - Cruiserette and I sitting up in MEL SKL F - which medicinal elixir would you like us to sample first in an attempt to transfer a warm fuzzy internal feeling towards you? Moët? Katnook Cab Sav? JW Blue? Baileys?

image.jpeg

Was actually going to SMS you earlier mate to see if you wanted to meet for dinner at OT - but alas public holiday sees them closed today so that dastardly plan never got off the ground - we ate at Airo at PR MEL instead.

Think I'll start with a Moët on your behalf mate - is that ok?

Damage from last week's storm at Crescent head.A rogue wave struck after dark. Some say it was ~ 2 metres over the old foot bridge washing part of it away.It went straight into the caravan park causing damage to the villas.

Cronulla used to have a beach - now it is a rocky cove.

Going to have to pull out my book learning. had a secondary security test 3 consecutive flights now, and probably the last 4 of 5. Either there is no way it's random or I need to buy a lotto.

Confronted the guy this morning to tell him that 3 consecutive flights is not random, in fact that's both 3 in a row at ADL and also at all airports. He told me they have a new system in ADL where they need to pick the person who makes the full set of lights light up on the walk through detector. When I suggested that I should wear different clothes, he said "You know better than that".
I should've asked if that was an admission that the process wasn't random.

Your randomly picked-on, every time :D

Have you got ANY metal in your body ?? Because the same thing happens to me. I have 2 metal plates and 12 screws in my ankle - not enough to set off the bells ( as opposed to Ron who sets it off every time with his new knee!) but enough to light up the indicators.

I worked at a place that used excel to randomly select people for testing. They soon found out that excel isn't truly random when there were specific employees that were being selected multiple times per month. Perhaps airport security is also using excel.

No extra metal. I took the time to observe the walk through detector. There were about 4 red lights, at the top, that lit up every time someone walked through. But then every so often red lights lit up the whole length of the detector. No alarm in either case. So perhaps something about my belt or shoes that is just below threshold to alarm but sets off the full set of red lights.

Weird. So you can't buy 6 random bottles of beer?

You probably could, though they wouldn't appreciate taking single bottles out of the pre-formed six packs. You would need to take them from another line where bottles are singly sold.

The way I read the sign is that you can't mix and match the bottles to create a mixed six pack.

In one way it's hard to comprehend this if all the six packs are the same price (e.g. 6 bottles of beer A is the same as 6 bottles of beer B, so why can't I have 3 of each). On the other hand, if there are no lines to sell these beers as single bottles, then there are problems created if you're allowed to mix and match beers in a six pack.

Perhaps the red lights are random?

No matter what % stopping rate overall, it is still possible to be by random even 3 times in a row.

Just like it's possible to win lotto three times in a row - just really, really unlikely......

Indeed. But being truly random is a non-trival problem. If it is truly random then I need to but a lotto ticket, given the small probabitily of being picked 3 times in a row. Otherwise, I suspect if they are using machines then it probably isn't random at all, like excel, or it is based on being a near miss on the metal detector.

Or the machine has a "random" feature (not that that is likely....), like the screen in some airports has a random "gun" appear on screen to ensure the screening is paying attention.

I don't think I've told people here for a while how much I hate cancer but it is following me around like a stray...

Just had a phone call from my best friend who lives in MEL. One of our mutual friends in MEL (aged early 50's) who got late onset Leukaemia had a bone marrow transplant (but it failed) and now the follow up Chemo has similarly failed. She's not going to have further treatment and has been given a month to live.

Fortunately for me, I have a trip planned to MEL for early next week and I have a late flight home, so I will make the effort to see her on my way back to the airport (she's at Essendon).

I HATE *@#$^%&* CANCER :evil::evil:

Doesn't everyone hate cancer? But my main fear is stroke.

Both are very scary.

My mum was recovering in hospital from what we thought was a minor surgery. When she was waking up/recovering there were concerns about her, and initially the doctors thought she had had a mild stroke and put her in an induced coma. We learned a few days later that she had liver cancer and the reaction she had was caused by infections or toxins being released into her body. The toxins should have been processed by the bile duct or liver, but couldn't be due to the tumour. We lost her a few months later and it all happened less than a year after we'd lost Dad to bowel cancer.

She probably would have survived a stroke. Several other members of our family already have.

Cancer does throw weird chemicals into the blood. The Haematologist was/is convinced I have occult cancer that caused my blood clot. I think I fear more living after a major stroke than dying.

My MIL died of ovarian cancer, Dad died of liver cancer, my mother of a stroke. Honestly? My MIL and Dad received way better palliative care than mum. I think they automatically treat the pain of cancer better with obvious sedating effects but certainly where mum was - they said she wasn't in pain. Because she hadn't told them she was. But she couldn't speak but was very restless. Red Flag for pain but it seemed to us that they were doing a cya for drug use. The GP had certified she was to be given relief as needed.

Well this post could go in the TV thread or the Cat thread or even here, so here I go.

ALF has died and the cats of the world are now safe.

Well not ALF but the actor who wore the suit has died.

THE man who played Alf, Michu Meszaros, has died.

According to TMZ the 83cm tall star was found unresponsive at his home more than a week ago and had been in a coma, the gossip site reports. He was 76.
