...but in the future....who knows?

Another target? Aim for the sky and you'll at least hit the roof.
Unfortunately gym sessions are a thing of the past limited to boredoom during high school lunch hours.

Left hip and knee are deteriorating rapidly. I will need to see a surgeon at some point. I don't want see a surgeon at any point. Losing weight may give me that chance. ;)

Finally stepped on the scales this morning after our two week trip and relieved to see that all that pasta and wine has been negated by 16 thousand steps a day....

Impressive. I never weigh until 2 weeks later as flying long distance = fluid retention.

John, Don't give up on all types of gym work. I am finding that 'one on one' reconditioning exercises at the gym are improving the nuisance pain levels in my dodgy right hip. The key is improving core muscle strength and flexibility.
Water walking is also good if you don't get bored witless walking up and down lanes in tepid, chlorinated pool water ! :)

Fortunately I have the same thing. I may actually consume fewer calories while on hols, due to less snacking and more water, but I definitely exercise more - its all those steps to the tops of cathedrals or monuments that count! 900 steps up to the monastery at Mt Popa in Burma was my best single effort (and if JohnM comes in saying how I piked the Hyanu Pichu climb, I'll throttle him!) :)

My blood tests are always better following a holiday abroad - I've been trying to get Medibank Private to subsidise my hols, for the preventative health benefits, but so far they are resisting! :(

I agree with less snacking. Sure, I have a larger lunch and some wine, but nothing in between. Because of my job I usually manage around 5k steps a day but this trip blew out my average to around 20k per day. And all those hilly Italian towns....

I have heard the Spanish Government used to pay for an annual holiday for it's Senior Citezens to the coast ! Maybe not now ...after the GFC.
Recent Michael Moore movie " Where to Invade Next " highlighted the German government paying for 'stressed' workers to attend a health spa !
COME ON MEDICARE or my private health fund!..... I fancy an all expenses paid warm winter break on Hamilton Island !

Come on now.Think big.A world cruise with all that beneficial exposure to sea air would do my health the world of good!:lol::cool:

Does getting sick more often increase your chances of dying earlier.

I don't smoke, maybe I should drink less.

Staying away from work decreases the stress I wish people would stop emailing me.

What is it with company's at the moment, you give them your email address so you can buy something and the first few months everything is ok you might get an email once a month from them, then something changes and you get daily emails.

QPAC, Dominos, QUT, I wish they would stop, QUT I haven't purchased anything just on their mailing list for past students.

Even the football teams are just as bad once a week receive an email from them as well.

That's such a good attitude to have about the knee/hip John. Weight loss is about the only thing that can reduce the pains, and the cycle of losing weight, less pain, can exercise more, lose more weight can really keep you going, good luck!

What gets me is businesses such as Hotels.com and Agoda constantly spamming.

I was thinking of going via USA in April next year and checked Agoda for hotels in Denver. They sent me an sms to let me know they saved my request. What? I can simply request the dates on my own. Don't need them saved. Then they send me email "Thinking of going to Denver"? We thought you might like these deals. And another email that night. And the next day and night.

Book 8 nights in Pattaya and the spam emails start. For f..ks sake I have just booked 8 nights I don't want to book again.

And then their specials, secret prices, half price sales all return the same rate.

They do have some really good deals sometimes but think it's time I unsubscribed. The few $ I would save is not worth the time I spend reading emails.

So, swimming or cycling may be alternatives for you BUT

  • NEVER do breast stroke kick as it is a destructive kick aka the surgeon's delight as it is a whip lash motion that damages the knee. That is why at elite level you never see a breast stroker as old as the participants in the other strokes. Surgeons should warn people but only a very small number do.
  • Never do a huge push off to start a lap as that is a similar whiplash impact on the joints. Just an easy acceleration not a sling shot.
  • With cycling NEVER fix your foot to the pedals. If they have a band you slip your foot into - then have it as loose as possible so your foot can move.

Swimming can be excellent for extending the life of deteriorating joints (subject to minding the points above) as you are weightless and the soft tissues get exercised without the load bearing. So strengthened without the impact.

France has laws which prevents workplaces from contacting workers outside of work hours.

Their has been a number of studies that show stress increases ones chances of physical illness, mental health and early death.

Couple ex-bosses would regularly work 12+ hour days. Always sick and getting other workers sick. One had a heart attack before the age of 50. This ex-boss has always a high turnover of staff. He has started smoking again... He won't be missed.

Swimming is not practical for me. Too busy. No time in Brisbane to find heated pool and definitely no time in Sydney on weekends.

I do a lot of walking and that's not including golf.

I have to learn to control food intake. No lollies. No junk food. Limited alcohol consumption.
