Interesting that with Australia Day holiday in 2017 falling on a Thursday it affords so many the opportunity to enjoy the ultimate Australian experience of making a 4 day long weekend. We only have 4 in our team and just happens I will be on my lonesome at work tomorrow. I wonder what I am doing wrong?

Not using your annual leave wisely....

Annual leave? What's that? Every day, 365 days a year is a potential work day for me, depending on what the clients asks, and the time they give me to do it.

Even when I'm on a personal overseas holiday, our agreement is that they can certainly ask me to do things on laptop (always goes with me) and once I even got diverted in Sth America to go to Canada, forgoing a wine tasting in western Argentina for a very urgent task. Another time I flew myself to San Diego for a big conference and spent the entire 4 days in the hotel room working on another urgent job. Got to give my talk and also go to the conference dinner, though.

Mind you, this type of service does come at a cost to said client ;) . Not complaining, just observing.

Or using it very wisely therefore having none in reserve for today.

It's like when I work public holidays; its usually pretty quiet so being at work isnt a big deal.

I always have my laptop with me and in Cambodia last year, I was processing payroll so I took 2 laptops for just in case.

When on holidays, I spend about 30mins a day going through emails and doing what I can, it makes my life easier for when I return to the office.

I have spent quite a few Christmas Eve's quietly sitting in my hotel room, doing stuff while hubby naps. Its the pay off for getting leave during end of months/quarters and I dont mind. Again, it makes my life easier.

I dont begrudge a little bit of extra work because I get a lot of leeway with my boss/employer.

Some French workers have the right to disconnect from work.

"These measures are designed to ensure respect for rest periods and ... balance between work and family and personal life," the Ministry of Labor said in a statement.
The rule requires companies with 50 or more employees to negotiate new out-of-office email guidelines with staff. Firms have a duty to regulate the use of emails to ensure employees get a break from the office.
If management and staff cannot agree on new rules, the firm must publish a charter to define and regulate when employees should be able to switch off.

Agree with the sentiments raised. Wondering why I decided to take a few days off too, had a sneaky peak at my emails upon landing (just taking a week off) and already had 150+ sitting there waiting from not even the completion of one day. Not looking forward to dealing with that when I get back x7!

My husband has an auto response of, "Im on leave, not reading emails, contact me after [insert date]". Then he mass deletes everything - I get anxiety just thinking about it.

My boss is pro switch off during leave but I know what I'll come back to so 30mins a day isnt an issue for me. I'll be the person hanging out at the Airport at Easter Island for the wifi...

Yeah, deleting all not really an option. I'm getting anxious thinking about that, too!

Of course - its France, the worker's paradise.

In most investment banks these days in Australia (and most like countries), its mandatory for execs, traders etc when they take mandatory 2 week break not to be able to access e-mails etc. Can't even take calls.

Not because of any tender concern for the execs, traders etc health by the company, but designed so that any scam or scheme set up by the trader etc has a chance of being uncovered when some-one else runs their account / clients for a couple of weeks! Been a rule for well over a decade.

ps noticed that another company CEO went to the clink yesterday, demonstrating yet again that the law applies to them as well as union bosses.

In case of pay wall:
Former Billabong chief Matthew Perrin has been jailed for at least four years over fraud and forgery charges after faking his wife’s signature to mortgage on their luxury $15m Gold Coast home.

Perrin, 44, was this morning sentenced to eight years in prison — with a non-parole period of four years — in the District Court in Brisbane this morning after being convicted on nine fraud and forgery charges.
