You throw things out based on a generic use by date without checking?
We are a very wasteful society and manufacturers have us exactly where they need us.
Dates are applied for very valid reasons.
A best before date is there as the date until which the product is fully marketable - and any qualities of the product (express or implied) will be retained. This is especially important for products claiming vitamin or mineral levels, delivering a health claim or certain protein levels etc.
A use by date is the date until which the food can be eaten without health and safety concerns. Of course a manufacturer will be conservative as they don't want to be sued!
Both of these are detailed in the Food Standards Code - so prescribed under legislation.
